Does parity worsen diabetes-related chronic complications in women with type 1 diabetes?

AIM: To determine the relationship between parity, glycemic control, cardiovascular risk factors and diabetesrelated chronic complications in women with type 1 ***: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study conducted between December 2008 and December 2010 in 28 public clinics in 20 cities from the 4 Brazilian geographic regions. Data were obtained from 1532 female patients, 59.2% Caucasians, and aged 25.2 ± 10.6 years. Diabetes duration was of 11.5 ± 8.2 years. Patient's information was obtained through a questionnaire and a chart review. Parity was stratified in five groups: Group 0(nulliparous), group 1(1 pregnancy), group 2(2 pregnancies), group 3(3 pregnancies), group 4(≥ 4 pregnancies). Test for trend and multivariate random intercept logistic and linear regression models were used to evaluate the effect of parity upon glycemic control, cardiovascular risk factors and diabetes-related complications. RESULTS: Parity was not related with glycemic control and nephropathy. Moreover, the effect of parity upon hypertension, retinopathy and macrovascular disease did not persist after adjustments for demographic and clinical variables in multivariate analysis. For retinopathy, the duration of diabetes and hypertension were the most important independent variables and for macrovascular disease, these variables were age and hypertension. Overweight or obesity was noted in a total of 538 patients(35.1%). A linear association was found between the frequency of overweight or obesity and parity(P = 0.004). Using a random intercept multivariate linear regression model with body mass index(BMI) as dependent variable a borderline effect for parity(P = 0.06) was noted after adjustment for clinical and demographic data. The new properties of engineered nanoparti- cles drive the need for new knowledge on the safety, fate, behavior and biologic effects of these particles on organisms and ecosystems. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been used extensively for a wide range of applica- tions, e.g, self-cleaning surface coatings, solar cells, water treatment agents, topical sunscreens. Within this scenario increased environmental exposure can be expected but data on the ecotoxicological evaluation ofnanoparticles are still scarce. The main purpose of this work was the evaluation of effects of TiO2 nanoparticles in several organisms, covering different trophic levels, using a battery of aquatic assays. Using fish as a vertebrate model organism tissue histological and ultrastructural observations and the stress enzyme activity were also studied. TiO2 nanoparticles （Aeroxide~ P25）, two phase composition ofanatase （65%） and rutile （35%） with an average particle size value of 27.64-11 nm were used. Results on the ECs0 for the tested aquatic organisms showed toxicity for the bacteria, the algae and the crustacean, being the algae the most sensitive tested organism. The aquatic plant Lemna minor showed no effect on growth. The fish Carassius auratus showed no effect on a 21 day survival test, though at a biochemical level the cytosolic Glutathione-S-Transferase total activity, in intestines, showed a general significant decrease （p〈0.05） after 14 days of exposure for all tested concentrations. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles aggregates were observed in the intestine lumen but their internalization by intestine cells could not be confirmed.

Anthropogenic impacts to the sediment budget of São Francisco River navigation channel using SWAT

The São Francisco River Basin,located in eastern Brazil,has undergone a significant amount of anthropogenic changes in the last several decades,such as agricultural expansion,irrigation activities,mining,and the construction of large ***,these changes have altered the historic sediment budget and have led to an aggradation of sediments in the navigation channel,impacting the ability to efficiently ship agricultural commodities to regional *** an effort to aid decision makers in future waterway navigation planning,an international partnership between the Brazilian government agency CODEVASF and the US Army Corps of Engineers(USACE)was *** this partnership a SWAT model of the 630000 km2 São Francisco River basin was developed to better understand both the historic and current sediment budget within the navigation *** SWAT model of the São Francisco River Basin was calibrated for hydrology and sediment *** discharges were calibrated at 17 Agência Nacional deÁguas(ana)gages,with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE)values ranging from 0.42 to 0.75 for an eleven year *** loads were calibrated to an ana sediment gage located in the Middle São Francisco River Navigation Channel,with a PBIAS(Percent Bias)of *** on model results,the aggradation rate of sediment in the São Francisco River and major tributaries has increased by approximately 20 Mt since Pre-European settlement of the basin(from approximately 7 Mt/a to 27 Mt/a).This increase has contributed to an impaired navigation channel due to shoaling of sandy sediments in the navigation channel.
