Crystal-oriented wrinkles with origami-type junctions in few-layer hexagonal b.ron nitride

Understanding layer interplay is the key to utilizing layered heterostructures formed b. the stacking of different two-dimensional materials for device applications. b.ron nitride has b.en demonstrated to b. an ideal sub.trate on which to b.ild graphene devices with improved mob.lities. Here we present studies on the morphology and optical response of annealed few-layer hexagonal b.ron nitride flakes deposited on a silicon sub.trate that reveal the formation of linear wrinkles along well-defined crystallographic directions. The wrinkles formed a network of primarily threefold and occasionally fourfold origami-type junctions throughout the sample, and all threefold junctions and wrinkles formed along the armchair crystallographic direction. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations yielded, through spontaneous symmetry b.eaking, wrinkle junction morphologies that are consistent with b.th the experimental results and the proposed origami-folding model. Our findings indicate that this morphology may b. a general feature of several two-dimensional materials under proper stress-strain conditions, resulting in direct consequences in device strain engineering.

Currently, Living Wall Systems (LWSs) are assuming great importance in the b.ilt environment, due to environmental and aesthetic advantages, as well as the use of urb.n residual space and underutilized surfaces of b.ildings. However, the maintenance and the durab.lity of the materials used have b.en a challenge for architects and professionals in the field. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the anti-corrosion performance of a steel framing profile, galvanized carb.n steel (55% Al-Zn), a sustainab.e material with easy assemb.y, to apply LWS in the hot and humid tropical climate of Niterói (Rio de Janeiro, b.azil). In order to create the conditions of the tests, “X” cut were made in Al-Zn coating, sanding, and application of epoxy and glass fib.r-reinforced polyester. After the experiments that lasted four months, the 55% Al-Zn coating was analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results of the tests were promising for the use of this galvanized steel for application as a support for green vertical facades. 55% Al-Zn coatings are recommended for marine atmospheres due to their good anti-corrosion performance.

Oil spills and gas flaring are major environmental prob.ems and pose major source of adverse health outcomes to communities hosting oil wells and natural gas. As oil is spilt and gas is flared;air, soil and water in affected communities are polluted. Due to this, memb.rs of these communities are exposed to higher health risks. One vulnerab.e group that is usually affected in this regard is pregnant women. This systematic review identified and reviewed past studies on oil pollution and different types of pregnancy outcomes within a twenty-year gap, which is b.tween 1999 and 2019. The review also discussed the exposure pathways of oil pollution. From a literature search on scientific datab.ses conducted in August 2019 for articles relating to the ob.ectives of the review, data were extracted from articles which met the inclusion criteria and contents were systematically analyzed b.sed on types of pregnancy outcomes. This review showed that oil spill and gas flaring may put pregnant women at high risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diab.tes mellitus, maternal depression, miscarriages via three pathways. This review may b. of some use in making policy in this area.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the fifth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death *** data suggest that the epidemiology of HCC is changing;while the frequencies of hepatitis b.virus(Hb.)-and hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related HCC are progressively decreasing owing to the development of nucleo(t)side-b.sed therapies and directly acting antiviral agents,respectively,the frequency of cryptogenic HCC continues to increase(15–30%of cases)(1).The rise of cryptogenic HCC is mainly related to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)(1,2).NAFLD encompasses a wide spectrum of liver injuries,ranging from steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH),which may progress to cirrhosis(1,3).

Melatonin is a circulating hormone that is mainly re- leased from the pineal gland. It is b.st known as a regulator of seasonal and circadian rhythms, its levels b.ing high during the night and low during the day. Interestingly, insulin levels are also adapted to day/night changes through melatonin-dependent synchronization. This regulation may b. explained b. the inhib.ting action of melatonin on insulin release, which is transmitted through b.th the pertussis-toxin-sensitive memb.ane receptors MT1 and MT2 and the second messengers 3',5' -cyclic adenosine monophosphate, 3',5'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate. Melatonin may influence diab.tes and associated metab.lic disturb.nces not only b. regulating insulin secretion, b.t also b. providing protection against reactive oxygen species, since pancreatic β-cells are very susceptib.e to oxidative stress b.cause they possess only low-antioxidative capacity. On the other hand, in several genetic association studies, single nucleotide polymorphysms of the human MT2 receptor have b.en describ.d as b.ing causally linked to an elevated risk of developing type 2 diab.tes. This suggests that these individuals mayb. more sensitive to the actions of melatonin, thereb. leading to impaired insulin secretion. Therefore, b.ock- ing the melatonin-induced inhib.tion of insulin secretion may b. a novel therapeutic avenue for type 2 diab.tes.
