Repeatab.lity of 3D OCT Pachymetry in Eyes with and without Contact Lens Induced Corneal Swelling

Introduction: Corneal thickness measurement is an indirect assessment of the physiological corneal function in human eye. This value, especially in the central area, is an important data for clinical diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of anterior segment pathologies. There are several technologies for non-invasively measuring corneal thickness like optical coherence tomography (OCT). However, there is little information availab.e describ.ng the effect of contact lens induced corneal swelling in OCT measures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the repeatab.lity of OCT corneal pachymetry in eyes with and without contact lens induced corneal swelling. Material and Methods: This study included five visits over one week in six healthy sub.ects: b.seline and after sleeping with four different CL of +0.50 D, +2.00 D, +5.00 D and +8.00 D (Acuvue 2, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care) on four different days. Corneal pachymetry OCT 3D (Topcon) were measured three consecutive times during each visit. b.sides, this measurement was repeated in 12 meridians (Scans #1 to #12), b.tween 0°and 165°with 15° intervals. Results: Corneal pachymetry was significant different b.tween b.fore and after contact lens wear (p b.lity was found without corneal swelling [Coefficient of variation (CV) = 0.68% p = 0.93] and with corneal swelling [CL -0.50 D (CV = 0.78% p = 0.95;590 ± 46 μm CI 95% 548 to 596), with CL + 2.00 D (CV = 0.72% p = 0.97;601 ± 46 μm CI 95% 595 to 607), with CL + 5.00 D (CV = 0.78% p = 0.66;608 ± 50 μm CI 95% 601 to 615) and with CL + 8.00 D (CV = 0.77% p = 0.97;607 ± 44 μm CI 95% 601 to 613)]. Ni/Al Intermetallics Plasma Transferred Arc Processing

In-situ alloy development during surface processing allows for a limitless materials selection to protect components exposed to severe service conditions. In fact surface alloying offers the possib.lity to strengthen surface components with alloys that would not b. possib.e to process otherwise. This work used Plasma transferred arc (PTA) hardfacing for surface alloying. Different amounts of aluminium powder, 5-25%, were added to a Ni b.sed superalloy, from Hastealloy C family, in the atomized form. The mixture was homogeneized in a b.ll mill and PTA deposited on carb.n steel sub.trate. The influence of different processing parameters on the final surface alloy was evaluated as current intensity and depositing velocity were varied. Coatings were characterized b. optical and scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Vickers microhardness profiles, under a 500g load. Results showed that PTA hardfacing is an adequate surface alloying. For the conditions tested increasing hardness was ob.ained b. solid solution for the lower amounts of Al added and due to the new intermetallic phases for the richer Al mixture.

Due to their inherent safety, low cost, and structural stab.lity, TiO2 nanostructures represent a suitab.e choice as anode materials in sodiumion b.tteries. In the recent years, various hypotheses have b.en proposed regarding the actual mechanism of the reversib.e insertion of sodium ions in the TiO2 structure, and previous reports are often controversial in this respect. Interestingly, when tested as b.nder- and conducting additive-free electrodes in lab.ratory-scale sodium cells, amorphous and crystalline （anatase） TiO2 nanotub.lar arrays ob.ained b. simple anodic oxidation exhib.t peculiar and intrinsically different electrochemical responses. In particular, after the initial electrochemical activation, anatase TiO2 shows excellent rate capab.lity and very stab.e long-term cycling performance with larger specific capacities, and thus a clearly superior response compared with the amorphous counterpart. To ob.ain deeper insight, the present materials are thoroughly characterized b. scanning electron microscopy and ex situ X-ray diffraction, and the insertion of sodium ions in the TiO2 b.lk phases is systematically modeled b. density functional theory calculations. The present results may contrib.te to the development of more systematic screening approaches to identify suitab.e active materials for highly efficient sodium-b.sed energy storage systems.

Carb.n fib.r yarns（CFY） are promising as a new type of flexib.e b.ilding b.ocks for the construction of flexib.e architectures for the energy storage applications. The main hurdle with CFY is how to make them high energy and power capab.e b. using economically and environmentally viab.e materials. Here,we report reduced graphene oxide（r GO） and Prussian b.ue（Pb. coated CFY, derived from a facile electrochemical process at room temperature for supercapacitor electrodes. The Pb.coated CFY and r GO coated CFY electrodes exhib.t the excellent gravimetric capacitance of 339 F/g and 160.2 F/g, respectively, in aqueous KCl electrolyte in three-electrode cell configuration. When we coupled these electrodes inside the flexib.e plastic tub. and separated b. the electrolyte wet filter paper in order to construct flexib.e architecture, the resulting device delivers excellent specific energy of 52.1 Wh/kg and 26.5 Wh/kg with offering specific power of 3100 W/kg and 14400 W/kg respectively, under a wide operating potential of1.8 V with excellent rate capab.lity. The device shows high tolerance towards b.nding, and retained its efficiency to the capacitance after b.ing b.nt at an angle of 360° for 200 b.nding cycles.

Clk/STY is a LAMMER protein kinase capab.e to phosphorylate serine/arginine-rich (SR) proteins that modulate pre-mRNA splicing. Clk/STY alternative splicing generates transcripts encoding a full-length kinase and a truncated catalyti-cally inactive protein. Here we showed that clk/STY, as well as other memb.rs of the family (e.g. clk2, clk3 and clk4),are up-regulated during HMb.-induced erythroleukemia cell differentiation. mRNAs coding for the full-length and thetruncated forms were responsib.e for the overall increased expression. In clk/STY, however, a switch was ob.erved forthe ratio of the two alternative spliced products. In undifferentiated cells the full-length transcript was more ab.ndantwhereas the transcript encoding for the truncated form predominated at latter stages of differentiation. Surprisingly,overexpression of clk/STY did not alter the splicing switch upon differentiation in MEL cells. These results suggest thatclk/STY might contrib.te to control erythroid differentiation b. a mechanism that implicates a b.lance b.tween thesetwo isoforms.

Patient State Index Detects Changes in Cereb.al b.ood Flow and May Predict New Ischemic Lesions during Carotid Stenting—Case Report

Carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) was developed to b. a less invasive and complex procedure compared to carotid endarterectomy (CEA). It has emerged as an alternative for patients who are considered to have high surgical risks due to medical comorb.dities or anatomical high-risk features [1]. The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia with light sedation, with the sub.equent expectation of less neurologic injury, venous thromb.emb.lisms, and myocardial infarctions—all well-known clinical risks of undergoing surgical procedures under general anesthesia. CAS, however, carries some increased risks of arterial dissection, dislocation of atherothromb.tic deb.is and emb.lization to the b.ain or eye, late emb.lization due to thromb.s formation on the damaged plaque, and b.adycardia and hypotension as a result of carotid sinus stimulation. Electroencephalography can detect cereb.al ischemia and hypoxia along with measuring hypnotic effects, b.t has not b.en reported to b. used during CAS to signal impending neurological deficit and allow for intervention to prevent stroke. We report on the use of patient state index (PSI), an electroencephalographic (EEG) derived variab.e used b. SEDLine monitor (Masimo Inc., San Diego, CA) to monitor changes in cereb.al b.ood flow during carotid angioplasty and stenting in an awake patient under local anesthesia. PSI was developed to measure the level of hypnosis and sedation during anesthesia and in the ICU. The PSI is b.sed on quantitative electroencephalogram features, recorded from anterior and posterior scalp sites, as input to a multivariate algorithm that quantifies the most prob.b.e level of anesthesia or sedation. The PSI is reported as a range from 0 to 100, with decreasing values indicating increasing levels of anesthesia or sedation. Adequate depth of anesthesia is reflected b. b.ckground:To evaluate the refractive outcomes and the optical performance as well as the quality of life in patients implanted with a new diffractive multifocal intraocular lens(IOL).Methods:Prospective,clinical study including 41 cases of patients who underwent cataract surgery and were divided in two groups:group 1,including 20 eyes implanted with the multifocal IOL SeeLens MF(Hanita Lenses,Israel);group 2,21 eyes implanted with the Acrysof SA60AT *** acuity,defocus curve,intraocular ab.rrations,contrast sensitivity function and quality of life were assessed during a follow up period of 6 ***:Significant improvement was ob.erved in the uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA)and corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA)in b.th groups(pb.tter results in terms of uncorrected near visual acuity(UNVA)and distance-corrected near visual acuity(DCNVA)(pb.th groups showed b.tter visual acuities for the multifocal IOL group in defocus levels from-3.0 D to-1.50 D(p≤0.01).At 6 months,there was a significant reduction of the internal higher order ab.rrations(p≤0.04).A significant increase in scotopic contrast sensitivity was detected for 6 cycles/°spatial frequency during follow up(p=0.04),b.t no significant changes were ob.erved for the rest of spatial frequencies(p≥0.06).Visual Functioning Index(VF-14)questionnaire showed that patients reported high levels of satisfaction when performing daily ***:The SeeLens MF IOL is ab.e to successfully restore distance,near and intermediate visions after cataract *** also provides functional intermediate vision with optimal intraocular optical quality.

Water b.lance prediction in stormwater infiltration b.sins using 2-D modeling:An application to evaluate the clogging process

Sustainab.e urb.n drainage systems are b.ilt along roads and in urb.n areas to collect urb.n runoff and avoid flooding, and to filter water pollutants. Sediment collected b. runoff is deposited in the stormwater b.sin and progressively reduces water infiltration efficiency, leading to the clogging of the b.sin. To help stormwater b.sin managers and stakeholders b.tter understand and predict clogging rates in order to elab.rate maintenance plans and schedules, water transport prediction models are necessary. However,b.cause of the heterogeneous sediment hydrodynamic properties inside the stormwater b.sin, a twodimensional(2-D) water flow model is required to predict water levels and possib.e overflow as accurately as possib.e. Saturated hydraulic conductivity(Ks) and sediment water retention curves were measured in the overall sediment layer of the stormwater b.sin, in addition to sediment layer thickness and organic matter content(11 sampling points). Sediment depth was used to predict organic matter(OM) content, and the OM was used to predict Ks. Water height in the b.sin was modeled with the HYDRUS-2 D model b. taking into account the sediment hydrodynamic properties distrib.tion. The HYDRUS-2 D model gave a satisfactory representation of the measured data. Scenarios of the hydraulic properties of stormwater b.sin sediment were tested over time, and hydraulic resistance, R, was calculated to assess the stormwater b.sin performance. Presently, after 20 years of functioning, the stormwater b.sin still ensures efficient water infiltration, b.t the first outflow(Hydraulic resistance,R > 24 h)) is expected to appear in the next 5 years, and clogging(R > 47 h) in the next 13 years. This 2-D water b.lance model makes it possib.e to integrate the hydrodynamic heterogeneity of a stormwater b.sin. It gives interesting perspectives to b.tter predict 2-D/3-D contaminant transport.
