To identify risk factors for A. baumannii infection in patients hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a tertiary public hospital in Paraná, Brazil, a retrospective paired case-control study (ratio 1:2) was conducted from January 2018 to December 2020. Patients in the case group were hospitalized in the ICU with A. baumanni (n = 68 cases) and were compared with patients in the control group, without infection by A. baumannii (n = 136). Both were matched by age (±10 years), sex, and ICU stay (±5 days). Conditional multiple logistic regression was used to determine statistically significant risk factors based on the results of bivariate analyses. Mortality was higher in infected (cases) than in non-infected patients (51.5% vs. 39.7%). The incidence and bacterial resistance increased annually. At bivariate analysis, cases had longer hospital stays (median 35 vs. 22 days, p A. baumannii and antimicrobial resistance. There is need for surveillance, and constant evaluation of control actions. Risk factors were colonization, previous hospitalization, and hospitalization time. This is essential for the decision-making of professionals and optimization of prevention, control, and therapeutic management actions.

A study of invasive strains of Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) from Cordoba and Misiones, Argentina;was conducted to determine serotypes, the susceptibility to macrolides and molecular profiles of virulence and resistance. We studied 17 strains, recovered from cerebrospinal fluid, blood and cellulite and, a strain of trophoblastic remnants from Misiones. The serotypes were determined by agglutination with sera and phenotypes of resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB), were determined with the double-disk test (D-test). The confirmation was performed by E-test by ERI and CLI respectively that determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Results were interpreted as recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) 2013. Resistance genes: ermB, ermTR and mefA and the virulence genes: bac, bca, rib, lmb, hylB, scpB, fbsA, fbsB and cylB were investigated by conventional PCR. Serotype III (50%) and ia (50%) were detected in Cordoba. One strain showed cMLSB phenotype, confirmed by MIC. The same strains showed a resistance gene ermB. All studied virulence genes were detected in 100% of these strains. In Misiones, serotypes were III (72.7%), ia (18.2%) and Ib (9.1%). All strains were susceptible to CLI and ERI by D-test, confirmed by MIC. None of the strains showed resistance genes. Virulence genes bca, rib, hylB, lmb, fbsA, fbsB and cylB were detected in 100% of the strains, bac in 81.8% and scpB in 90.9%. Our results are in accordance with international data, asso.iating higher frequency of serotype III of invasive neonatal disease followed by ia. The presence of serotype Ib could indicate a regional difference for Misiones. We highlight the macrolides susceptibility in strains of Misiones and consistency in the results for D-test, MIC and PCR for the single strain resistant phenotype cMLSB from Cordoba. The virulence genes studied were presented with high frequency as expected for invasive strains.

This paper presents the influence of the ratio ia/PA and concentration of volatile acids (TVA) in the operational stability of a UASB reactor treating swine waste water. The treatment system in real scale was constituted of decanter, followed by the UASB reactor with volume of 7.4 m3 and 11.5 m3, respectively. It has been observed a large oscillation of the ratio ia/IP in the UASB reactor with an average value of 0.39, and average efficiency of removal of BOD and COD of 79.8 and 79.3%, respectively, at the start, dropping to 0.12 in the continuity of the experiment, including during overload, in which the removal efficiencies of COD and BOD reached values below 10%. The TVA average values were 913 mg·L-1 in the UASB reactor, increasing considerably in the overload period, reaching values higher than 4500 mg·L-1, indicating an accumulation of volatile acids and reduced efficiency of the UASB reactor in removal of organic matter. We conclude that the monitoring of the values of the ratio ia/PA and TVA is very useful instruments and easy to determine in the monitoring of the UASB reactor, enabling to predict possible instabilities in the reactor, allowing corrective actions in a timely manner.

In this paper, we report the obtention of gadolinium oxide doped with europium (Gd2O3:Eu+3) by thermal decomposition of the Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ precursor prepared by the microwave assisted hydrothermal method. These systems were analyzed by thermalgravimetric analyses (TGA/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), structural Rietveld refinement method, fourrier transmission infrared absorbance spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) measurement. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement analysis and FT-IR confirmed that the Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ precursor crystallize in a hexagonal structure and space group P6/m, while the Gd2O3:Eu3+ powders annealed in range of 500°C and 700°C crystallized in a cubic structure with space group ia-3. FE-SEM images showed that Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ precursor and Gd2O3:Eu3+ are composed by aggregated and polydispersed particles structured as nanorods-like morphology. The excitation spectra consisted of an intense broad band with a maximum at 263 nm and the Eu3+ ions can be excitated via matrix. The emission spectra presented the characteristics transitions of the Eu3+ ion, whose main emission, , is observed at 612 nm. The photophysical properties indicated that the microwave sintering treatment favored the Eu3+ ions connected to the O-Gd linkages in the Gd2O3 matrix. Also, the emission in the Gd2O3:Eu3+ comes from the energy transfered from the Gd-O linkages to the clusters in the crystalline structure.

Background: Proximal gastrectomy is a rarely performed procedure but a feasible option in benign tumors and malignant neoplasms in the proximal third of the stomach since novel options of reconstructions are available nowadays with fewer long-term sequels. Methods: Report of three cases of proximal gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), with a description of its presentation, histological characteristics, and follow-up after being treated with proximal gastrectomy with cobra head reconstruction. Results: Case 1: A 62-year-old woman with epigastric pain of four months with endoscopic evidence of a cardia GIST. The surgery was performed without complications. The histopathological report confirmed a fusiform GIST of 3.2 × 3 × 2.5 cm, stage ia. No adjuvant treatment was considered. An esophagogram showed no evidence of reflux and no stenosis, and no disease recurrence after 40-months follow-up. Case 2: A 66-year-old woman with dyspepsia and a palpable tumor in the epigastrium. The surgery was performed without complications. The pathology report confirmed a proximal gastric GIST of 13 × 8 × 7 cm, staged II. She received adjuvant treatment with imatinib for 36 months without recurrence and no reflux or stenosis. Case 3: A 55-year-old woman with intermittent hematemesis and right subscapular pain. The surgery was performed without complications. The histopathological report concluded that a GIST tumor of the cardia, 1.4 × 1.2 cm, staged ia. She was left in observation. At a 6-month follow-up, she does not report dysphagia, reflux, or stenosis, and no locoregional recurrence. Conclusions: Open and laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy is a safe therapeutic option for GIST. Furthermore, the reconstruction of the esophagus-gastro anastomosis in the cobra head after proximal gastrectomy is feasible and secure in our population, with good functional results in a short follow-up.
