Dietary supplementation with free methionine or methionine dipeptide mitigates intestinal oxidative stress induced by Eimeria spp. challenge in broiler chickens

Background: This study evaluated the effects of Eimeria spp. challenge and dietary supplementation with free methionine or methionine dipeptide on animal performance;expression of genes associated with the immune system, antioxidant system, and amino acid transport in the jejunum;and redox status of the jejunum of broiler ***: A randomized, 2 × 3 factorial design was used, in which Eimeria spp. challenge was the first factor(Eimeria-challenged, EC, or unchallenged, UC, broilers) and methionine supplementation was the second factor(non-supplemented, NS;free DL-methionine, DL-Met;and methionine dipeptide, DL-methionyl-DL-methionine, DLMMet). At 14 days of age, chickens were inoculated orally with sporulated oocysts of Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria praecox, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria mitis. Birds were killed by cervical dislocation 144 h post-inoculation(PI), and the jejunum was collected for biochemical and molecular ***: EC broilers had a 13% lower feed intake(FI), 37% lower body weight gain(BWG), and 39% higher feed conversion ratio(FCR) than UC broilers. Chickens fed the DL-Met diet had higher BWG(about 12% higher) and better FCR(about 12% lower) than chickens fed the NS diet. EC chickens had lower relative weight of the bursa of Fabricius(51.8%) and higher relative weights of the spleen and whole intestine(53.6% and 26.3%, respectively) than UC chickens. Eimeria spp. challenge led to an increase in the levels of oxidative substances, such as nitrite and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS), in the jejunum of chickens 144 h PI. Among UC chickens, those fed the DL-Met diet had higher total antioxidant capacity(TAC) and lower catalase(CAT) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activities. EC chickens that received the NS diet had higher carbonylated protein content(CP). This result was associated with their lower TAC and catalase activity. In vitro antileishmanial effects of Physalis angulata root extract on Leishmania infantum

Objective： In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the aqueous extract of Physalis angulata root （AEPa） on Leishmania infanturn proliferation, morphology, and the driving mechanism in leishmanicidal activity and modulatory action on macrophages. Methods： I., infantum promastigotes were treated with 50 and 100 μg/mL AEPa for 72 h and then antipro- mastigote assay was performed by counts in a Newbauer chamber, morphological changes were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and the mechanism of the leishmanicidal activity was detected. In addition, macrophages were infected with L. infantum and were used to evaluate anti-amastigote activity of AEPa and effects of AEPa on cytokine secretion after 72-hour treatment. Results： Treatment with AEPa reduced the numbers ofL infantum promastigotes （50% inhibitory concen- tration （ICso） = 65.9μg/mL; selectivity index （SI）= 22.1） and amastigotes （ICso = 37.9 μg/mL; SI = 38.5） compared with the untreated control. Amphotericin B reduced 100% of the promastigote numbers after 72 h of treatment （IC50 = 0.2μg/mL）. AEPa induced several morphological changes and increased the production of reactive oxygen species and apoptotic death in promastigotes after treating for 72 h. AEPa （100 μg/mL） promoted tumor necrosis factor-α secretion in macrophages infected with L. infantum after 72 h of treatment, but did not induce an increase in this cytokine in noninfected macrophages. In addition, AEPa showed no cytotoxic effect on J774-A1 cells （50% cytotoxic concentration 〉1000μg/mL）. Conclusion： AEPa presented antileishmanial activity against the promastigotes and amastigotes of I.. infantum without macrophage cytotoxicity; these results show that natural products such as P. angulata have leishmanicidal potential and in the future may be an alternative treatment for leishmaniasis.

Tracking leaf area index and coefficient of light extinction over the harvesting cycle of black wattle

The amount of photosynthetic radiation inter- cepted by a crop is a function of the incident solar radiation on the plants, the leaf area index （LAI）, and the light extinction coefficient （k）. We quantified LAI and k in stands of black wattle （Acacia mearnsii De Wild.） over a 7-year growth cycle at two locations in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Our study was conducted in commercial stands in agroecological regions with high densities of black wattle plantations. LAI was calculated as the ratio between the leaf area of a tree and its planting space, and k was derived from Beer＇s law. LAI depends on the planting site and stand age. Between the two sites, the LAI was similar over time, the amount of variation differed. Values of k depended only on stand age, with the highest average observed for stands up to 5 years old. The trend of k during the plantation cycle was inversely proportional to LAI and was correlated with LAI, leaf area, leaf dry mass, canopy volume, height, branches dry mass, total dry mass, and crown diameter.

Rheological Study of Polymers Used as Viscosity Index Improvers for Automotive Lubricant Oils

In this work, a rheological study of automotive lubricant oils, neutral light paraffinic (NLP) and neutral medium paraffinic (NMP), additivated with two commercial viscosity index improvers-VIIs, based on hydrogenated poly (isoprene-co-styrene), at different concentrations, was carried out. The study included the determination of the kinematic viscosity of the mixtures, the calculation of the viscosity indexes and their behavior when subjected to various rheometric experiments, including stress sweep, steady state flow, creep and recovery, and temperature ramp oscillatory tests. The obtained results showed the efficacy of the additives as viscosity index improvers, enabling a significant increase in the viscosity index of the pure oils at relatively low concentrations. The determination of the storage (G’) and of the loss (G”) moduli for the mixtures oil/VII additives showed a large predominance of the viscous effect over the elastic one. Except when under low shear stress, the mixtures showed a pseudoplastic behavior, with the flow curves being adjusted to fit the Ostwald-de-Waele model (Power Law), with negative flow behavior indexes.

Background: Hypothermic preservation of boar semen is considered a potential method for omitting antibiotics from insemination doses, thereby contributing to the global antibiotic resistance defence strategy. The main challenges are chilling injury to spermatozoa and bacterial growth during semen storage leading to reduced ***: To examine chilling injury and the number and type of bacteria in boar semen stored at 5 ℃ in the absence of antibiotics, and to assess the applicability of hypothermic semen storage under field *** and methods: Boar ejaculates were extended with AndroStar~? AIM： To measure circulating angiotensins at different stages of human cirrhosis and to further evaluate a possible relationship between renin angiotensin system （RAS） components and hemodynamic changes. METHODS： Patients were allocated into 4 groups： mild-to-moderate liver disease （MLD）, advanced liver disease （ALD）, patients undergoing liver transplantation, and healthy controls. Blood was collected to determine plasma renin activity （PRA）, angiotensin （Ang） Ⅰ, Ang Ⅱ, and Ang-（1-7） levels using radioimmunoassays. During liver transplantation, hemodynamic parameters were determined and blood was simultaneously obtained from the portal vein and radial artery in order to measure RAS components. RESULTS： PRA and angiotensins were elevated in ALD when compared to MLD and controls （P 〈 0.05）. In contrast, Ang Ⅱ was significantly reduced in MLD. Ang-（1-7）/Ang Ⅱ ratios were increased in MLD when compared to controls and ALD. During transplantation, Ang Ⅱ levels were lower and Ang-（1-7）/Ang Ⅱ ratios were higher in the splanchnic circulation than in the peripheral circulation （0.52 ± 0.08 vs 0.38 ±0.04, P 〈 0.02）, whereas the peripheral circulating Ang Ⅱ/Ang Ⅰ ratio was elevated in comparison to splanchnic levels （0.18 ±0.02 vs 0.13 ±0.02, P 〈 0.04）. Ang-（1-7）/ Ang Ⅱ ratios positively correlated with cardiac output （r = 0.66） and negatively correlated with systemic vascular resistance （r = -0.70）. CONCLUSION： Our findings suggest that the relationship between Ang-（1-7） and Ang Ⅱ may play a role in the hemodynamic changes of human cirrhosis.

The consumption of marine macroalgae has been linked with health benefits,albeit some actions,including genoprotection,remain ***,we evaluated the genoprotective potential of a mixture of Ulva rigida,Fucus vesiculosus and Gracilaria gracilis,through direct consumption or via indirect intake using fish(Sparus aurata)as a vector of algal ***(Mus musculus)were subjected to a 1-month dietary supplementation with 5%of macroalgae mix or 10%of fillet of fish previously fed with an algae-supplemented aquafeed(for comparison purposes,10%supplementation with fillet of fish standardly fed was also considered).Thereafter,mice were challenged by the genotoxicant methyl methanesulfonate(MMS),and the genetic damage was evaluated through the micronuclei ***,a wider evaluation was carried out encompassing the assessment of energy metabolism,haematological and histological parameters,as well as growth *** unequivocally protected against MMS-induced *** activity profile of hepatic lactate and isocitrate dehydrogenases promoted by the supplemented diets reflected an improved energy *** properties were not transferred via fish fed with the algae-supplemented aquafeed,though the transference of phytocomponents with beneficial properties(*** balance improvement)should not be ***,these findings highlighted the genoprotection afforded by marine macroalgae,likely promoted by desmutagenic factors,reinforcing their definition as functional *** possibility of using fish as an indirect source of algae-borne phytocomponents proved to be plausible and worthy of further investigations.

analytical solutions have varied uses. One is to provide solutions that can be used in verification of numerical methods. Another is to provide relatively simple forms of exact solutions that can be used in estimating parameters, thus, it is possible to reduce computation time in comparison with numerical methods. In this paper, an alternative procedure is presented. Here is used a hybrid solution based on Green＇s function and real characteristics （discrete data） of the boundary conditions.
