Evidences point that complement activation plays a role in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this context, expression of the CReg was investigated on white cells from peripheral blood of 30 RA patients and 30 healthy controls. Using flow cytometric analyses the relative fluorescence intensities (MFI) of Cregs were determined. CD59 MFI was significantly increased in RA cells comparing to controls, respectively: lymphocytes 36.8 versus 27.07;monocytes 32.0 versus 21.37;and granulocytes: 84.6 versus 66.1 (p 0.05). Interestingly, no difference was observed on the MFI to CD55, CD46 and CD35 in these cells. These data indicate an overexpression of CD59 in all the peripheral blood cells of RA patients, perhaps due to an increased synthesis for compensatory mechanisms because of complement activation, inflammatory status or other factors associated with the disease.

Initial Development of Cowpea Bean Fertilized with Natural Phosphate in the Brazilian Cerrado Soil

Cowpea, string Bean, or Macassar bean [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] presents a short life cycle, low water requirement, develops in soils of low fertility, and has the ability to fix nitrogen from the air. In the Cerrado, the oxisols occupy practically all the flat to soft-wavy areas with little reserve of nutrients for the plants, in general, they are soils with great limitations of fertility. A source of alternative phosphate fertilization is the use of reactive natural phosphates. The reactive natural phosphate of Bayóvar presents intermediate solubility between the sources of soluble phosphates and the natural phosphates. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the initial development of Cowpea beans fertilized with the natural Bayóvar phosphate used for cultivation of the Brazilian Cerrado Oxisol. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six doses of phosphorus (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 mg·dm-3) using natural Bayovar phosphate as a source in four replications. The species used in this study was the legume cowpea bean [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] cultivar Tumucumaque. The treatments were applied using the natural phosphate Bayóvar as a source of phosphorus (29% of P2O5). At 33 DAS (days after sowing), the variable number of leaves of the Cowpea bean was analyzed and at 40 DAS, the variables plant height, SPAD chlorophyll index (Soil Plant analysis Development) and stem diameter were analyzed. For all variables analyzed there was a significant effect. The initial development of the cowpea bean cultivated in the Brazilian Cerrado Oxisol was significantly influenced by the Bayóvar natural phosphate fertilization with the best phosphorus (P2O5) doses in the range of 200 to 350 mg·

The Major Facilitator Superfamily(MFS)is ubiquitous in living organisms and represents the largest group of secondary active membrane *** plants,significant research efforts have focused on the role of specific families within the MFS,particularly those transporting macronutrients(C,N,and P)that constitute the vast majority of the members of this *** MFS families remain less explored,although a plethora of additional substrates and physiological functions have been ***,the lack of a systematic approach to analyzing the MFS as a whole has obscured the high diversity and versatility of these ***,we present a phylogenetic analysis of all annotated MFS domaincontaining proteins encoded in the Arab/dops/s fA?a//ana genome and propose that this superfamily of transporters consists of 218 members,clustered in 22 *** reviewing the available information regarding the diversity in biological functions and substrates of Arab/dops/s MFS members,we provide arguments for intensified research on these membrane transporters to unveil the breadth of their physiological relevance,disclose the molecular mechanisms underlying their mode of action,and explore their biotechnological potential.

Caboxymetylcellulose/Gelatin Blends Loaded with Piroxicam: Preparation, Characterization and Evaluation of in Vitro Release Profile

Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) exhibiting analgesic and antipiretic properties and widely used in the management of chronic diseases. Associated with these use, there are registers of adverse reactions. Microparticle formulations in hydrogel matrix can be used to form a semi-permeable barrier which enables their actions and can reduce the effects. This work presents a study on the effect of gelatin/carboxymethyl cellulose (Gel/CMC) semi-IPN matrix composition on the retention and kinetic behavior of releasing this drug. The microparticles were obtained through the emulsion-crosslinking method using 23 factorial planning and the piroxicam was added as solid particles. In order to characterize the interaction between matrix-active agent and quantification of the drug, the following techniques were applied: SEM, DSC and XRD. SEM micrographs revealed microparticles with regular and spherical shape and that in some compositions the drug is partially absorbed and not encapsulated. Beyond that DSC and XRD analyses indicate that the piroxicam remained in the matrixes, maintains the same crystalline form. The factorial planning analysis indicated that matrix obtained a maximum encapsulation efficiency (EE%) of 10.64% and became possible to create a response surface graph using a EE% as answer. In addition to this, release kinetics analyses demonstrated that the release process seems to be governed by distinctly kinetic models, considering the composition of the sample. In some samples the release can be driven by Fickinianan diffusion, others by anomalous transport or swelling.

Contraception Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Adolescents at Risk of Pregnancy in Northeastern Brazil

Background: Contraceptive methods (CM) are important resources in the prevention of adolescent pregnancy. This study aimed to investigate adolescent knowledge, attitudes and practices related to contraception. Study Design: A cross-sectional and exploratory study was conducted with 7th to 9th grade adolescents in northeastern Brazil. Their knowledge, attitudes, and contraceptive method use were analysed by gender, age and sexual initiation groups. Results: A sexual debut had been experienced by 21% (n = 120) of all respondents (n = 570). The majority of the respondents who had experienced a sexual debut were male (73.3%, n = 88), their mean age was 15 years (SD = 1.46), and 49.3% (n = 59) never used any CM. The participants displayed low knowledge and unfavourable and ambivalent attitudes concerning contraception. Conclusion: Adolescents initiate sexual intercourse with knowledge and attitudes that limit the use of CM, which makes them more at risk of pregnancy. Further research that will be representative of the specific population in need of interventions is necessary.

Effects of Sodium Diclofenac on the Distribution of Fos Protein in Central Amygdala and Lateral Hypothalamus during Experimental Tooth Movement in Rats

This study evaluated whether the administration of a NSAID, sodium diclofenac, can promote alterations in the expression of Fos protein in central amygdala (CEA) and the lateral hypothalamus (LH) after 6 h of experimental tooth movement with a controlled force of 70 g, applied to the superior central incisors of rats. Adult male rats were anesthetized and divided into four groups: Control, no orthodontic appliance (OA);OA activated with 70 g;OA activated with 70 g and pretreated with diclofenac sodium (5 mg/kg, intramuscular);and diclofenac sodium alone. Six hours after the onset of the experiment the rats were reanesthetized and perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde. The brains were removed and fixed, and sections containing the CEA and LH were processed for Fos protein immunohistochemistry. The results show that in the control group, intramuscular injection of a ketamine/xylazine mixture did not induce IR-Fos cells in the CEA or LH. However, in the 70 g group, IR-Fos was the strongest observed

Maintaining the viability of probiotic microorganisms from production to consumption has long been a technological challenge for the food industry. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the in vitro interaction between Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 and Williopsis saturnus var. suaveolens and the effect of this yeast on acidification kinetics, viability ofLactobacillus acidophilus and post-acidification in fermented milk during refrigerated storage at 5℃. The in vitro study showed a positive interaction between the acid cell free-supernatant （CFS） ofprobiotic bacteria La-5 and the yeast. The addition of W. saturnus var. suaveolens increased the fermentation time due to consumption of the organic acids produced by L. acidophilus. During the refrigerated storage of the samples, the presence of the yeast increased the viability of L. acidophilus and reduced post-acidification. However, the mechanism of such interaction of bacteria and yeast is not fully understood.

This paper discusses the hypothesis of height distribution on a forest stand of Acacia mearnsii De Wild, known as black wattle. It remains constant at varied growing environments and, in addition, they are not influenced by age factor. The Wakeby equation was applied. The research was carried out in a black wattle stand at varied age levels and over two different agroecological regions where plantations are found: Serra do Sudeste and Encosta do Sudeste, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. It was observed that as the age rises there is an increase in the stand total height;while the number of trees decreases for the lower classes, it increases for the upper ones. This resulted in lengthening of the curve tail to the left and mode shift to the right, generating negative asymmetrical curves. Two types of height distribution were found: the sharp increase of probability in a specific class and some similar probabilities in successive classes. The distribution curves between the cultivation areas were statistically different and therefore the height distribution was dependent of environment.

Objectives： This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant capacity, to determine the anti-inflammatory effect due to lipoxygenase inhibition and to test the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts from leaves of seven climbing species belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. These species are Adenocalyrnrna rnarginatum （Cham.） DC., Amphilophium vauthieri DC., Cuspidaria convoluta （VEIL） A. H. Gentry, Dolichandra dentata （K. Schum.） L. G. Lohmann, Fridericia caudigera （S. Moore） L. G. Lohmann, Fridericia chica （Bonpl.） L. G. Lohmann and Tanaecium selloi （Spreng.） L. G. Lohmann. Methods： The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three methods, 2,2＇-azino-bis（3-ethylbenzothiazo line-6-sulfonic acid）（ABTS）, 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl （DPPH）, and ferric reducing antioxidant power. Lipoxygenase-inhibiting activity was assayed spectrophotometrically; the result was expressed as percent inhibition. The antimicrobial activity was assessed using the agar disk diffusion method. Minimal inhibitory concentration （MIC） and minimal bactericidal]fungicidal concentration were also determined for each extract against 12 pathogenic bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus and seven fungal strains of the Candida genus. The identification of the major compounds present in the most promising extract was established by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Results： C convoluta, F. caudigera, and F. chica exhibited the best antioxidant activity by scavenging DPPH and ABTS~ radicals and reducing Fe3＋ ion. These extracts showed a notable inhibition of lipnxygenase. F. caudigera was found to have the lower MIC value against S. aureus strains and six Candida species. The extracts of F. caudigera and C. convoluta were active even against methicillin-resistant S. aureus. C convoluta had higher total phenol content, better antioxidant activity and superior anti- inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. The main phenolic compounds found in this extract
