As forests in neotropical regions,particularly in developing countries,are devastated,interventions to restore biodiversity and its ecological functions are *** producers have thus been encouraged to grow trees for wood production as an economic *** objective of this study was to quantify the increment of wood density of four forest species from different successional classes of a mixed system of restoration in a neotropical forest in *** discs were sampled at breast height and analyzed radially by X-ray densitometry to obtain apparent density and basic *** trees each of a species from the pioneer,early and late secondary successional stages and of the dominant species in the climax *** radial profiles indicated increasing density from the pith to bark of trunks,except for some variations due to wood defects and *** density was 0.576 g cm^(-3),0.655 g cm^(-3),0.706 g cm^(-3)and 0.775 g cm^(-3),respectively,for Peltophorum dubium,Schinus terebinthifolius,Cariniana estrellensis and Hymenaea *** profiles indicated higher amplitudes in the apparent densities for slow-growing species.X-ray densitometry generated parameters such as minimum,average and maximum densities,and radial density *** parameters are important for understanding the ecological functional role of successional classes of the Atlantic Forest from the Neotropical region.

Successful double fertilization and subsequent seed development in flowering plants requires the delivery of two sperm cells, transported by a pollen tube, into the embryo sac of an ovule. The embryo sac cells tightly control synergid cell death, and as a result the polyspermy block. Arabinogalactan proteins are highly glycosylated proteins thought to be involved in several steps of the reproductive process. We show that JAGGER, Arabinogalactan Protein 4, is an important molecule necessary to prevent the growth of multiple pollen tubes into one embryo sac in Arabidopsis thaliana. In jagger, an AGP4 knockout mutant, the pistils show impaired pollen tube blockage as a consequence of the survival of the persistent synergid. JAGGER seems to be involved in the signaling pathway that leads to a blockage of pollen tube attraction. Our results shed light on the mechanism responsible for preventing polyspermy in Arabidopsis and for safe- guarding successful fertilization of all ovules in one pistil, ensuring seed set and the next generation.

BACKGROUND Patients with cirrhosis are at risk of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy,with resulting cardiac dysfunction and exercise *** minute walking test(6mWT)assesses functional status and predicts morbidity and mortality in cardiopulmonary *** To determine if it associates with mortality by analyzing 6mWT performance in patients with liver *** A cohort of 106 cirrhotic patients was evaluated in the outpatient setting with echocardiogram and 6mWT and follow up for one year to document hepatic decompensation and *** distance in meters was recorded at the end of 6 min(6mWD).RESULTS This cohort had a mean age of 51 years and 56%male;patients were staged as Child A in 21.7%,B 66%and C 12.3%.Walk distance inversely correlated with Child scores,and was significantly reduced as Child stages *** who died(10.4%)showed shorter mean 6mWD(P=0.006).Low 6mWD was an independent predictor of mortality(P=0.01).CONCLUSION 6mWT is a noninvasive inexpensive test whose result is related to Child scores and *** is useful to identify patients with liver cirrhosis at high risk of mortality for closer monitoring and potential early intervention.

Epidemiological Aspects and Clinicopathological Findings in Cats Naturally Infected with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and/or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

Infections produced by feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV), two of the most prevalent pathogens in cats, range from passing unnoticed to presenting a wide variety of clinical signs. Different epidemiological, clinical, hematological and virological parameters were analyzed in 78 FIV- and/or FeLV-infected cats. FeLV-infected (FeLV+) cats were considerably younger than FIV-infected (FIV+) cats, and in general were seen to have a more severe disease than FIV+ cats. Around one third of the cats presented anemia, and neutropenia was also frequently observed. Though a higher percentage of FIV+ than FeLV+ cats had altered leukocyte counts, FeLV+ cats had altered counts of both neutrophils and lymphocytes more frequently than FIV+, which usually presented only either altered neutrophils or lymphocyte counts. Virological markers were only detected in FeLV+cats, either as mono- or dual-infection, and correlated with the severity of the disease, but not in FIV+ cats. In conclusion, these results suggest that FeLV affects more blood cell types and provokes death of affected animals at a much earlier age than FIV and that the severity of the disease seemed to depend on the viral status of the cat.

The Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is a formula of a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat asthma patients and has been shown to have several important properties,such as antioxidant and free radical scavenging *** influence of an extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m was *** blood(Wistar rats) was incubated with the extract,stannous chloride and technetium-99m,as sodium *** were centrifuged and aliquots of plasma and blood cells were separated and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid,to obtain soluble and insoluble fractions of the blood *** percentage of radioactivity(%ATI) in all the fractions was *** analysis of the results shows that the extract at the highest concentration used(70 mg/mL) decreased significantly(Pm 96.48 ± 1.19 to 54.46 ± 7.38) on blood cells compartment,(from 81.11 ± 4.15 to 61.33 ± 4.74) on insoluble fractions of blood cells and(from 65.91 ± 2.44 to 13.15 ± 3.62) on insoluble fractions of *** conclusion,the results suggest that the substances present on this extract can alter this labeling process,probably due to(i) redox properties(antioxidant and chelator activities) and/or(ii) specific actions in the binding sites where the 99mTc would be bound on the blood *** a consequence,precaution is suggested on the interpretation of the nuclear medicine results from performed with blood constituents labeled with 99m Tc in patients that have undertaken LWDHW,although the current findings were obtained in experimental animal models.

G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 （GRK2） is an important serine/threonine-kinase regulating different membrane receptors and intraceUular proteins. Attenuation of Drosophila Gprk2 in embryos or adult flies induced a defective differentiation of somatic muscles, loss of fibers, and a flightless phenotype. In vertebrates, GRK2 hemizygous mice contained less but more hypertrophied skeletal muscle fibers than wild-type littermates. In C2C12 myoblasts, overexpression of a GRK2 kinase-deficient mutant （K220R） caused precocious differentiation of ceUs into immature myotubes, which were wider in size and contained more fused nuclei, while GRK2 overexpression blunted differentiation. moreover, p38mAPK and Akt pathways were activated at an earlier stage and to a greater extent in K220R-expressing cells or upon kinase downregulation, while the activation of both kinases was impaired in GRK2-overexpressing cells. The impaired differentiation and fewer fusion events promoted by enhanced GRK2 levels were recapitulated by a p38mAPK mutant, which was able to mimic the inhibitory phosphorylation of p38mAPK by GRK2, whereas the blunted differentiation observed in GRK2-expressing clones was rescued in the presence of a constitutively active upstream stimulator of the p38mAPK pathway. These results suggest that balanced GRK2 function is necessary for a timely and complete myogenic process.

Serial Ultrasonographic measurements to Estimate Age and Viability in <i>Bos indicus</i>Embryos

Early pregnancy diagnosis is a very important routine management to identify non-pregnant cows in order to keep an optimum reproductive efficiency both for dairy and beef cows. Ultrasound equipment allows estimating the viability and size of the embryo during early gestation. With the aim of assessing age and viability of Bos indicus embryos between 24 and 35 days of gestation, 55 cows were divided into 4 clusters. These clusters were conformed according to the first day that an echogenic structure was seen inside the embryonic vesicle (Group 1: day 24, Group 2: day 26, Group 3: day 27 and Group 4: day 28). The age of the embryos was estimated from the date of AI. Three progressive serial measurements of their length were made within 2 to 5 days. With a model GEE (Generalized Estimating Equations), the effect of days was evaluated to compare the second measurement with the first one and the former with the third observation. No differences in the size of the embryos were observed between the first evaluation (24 days) and the second (28 days) (P = 0.387). Also, simple linear regression analysis found a positive linear association between the size of the embryo and gestation days (R2 = 0.593) with an average growth of 0.078 cm per day (P = 0.001). In conclusion, the variation between measurements at a given time does not allow estimating with precision the exact day of gestation. Nonetheless, serial measurements are useful to estimate the healthy growth of the embryo from day 26 of gestation.

Antimicrobial Activity and Rates of Tannins in Stryphnodendron adstringens *** Collected in the Brazilian Cerrado

Inner bark extracts of Stryphnodendron adstringens, a leguminous tree species known as Barbatimão, are often incorporated to phytotherapic formulations due to their antimicrobial and healing activities. In this study, extracts from S. adstringens accessions collected in 12 distinct locations were investigated in order to determine the rates of tannins in inner barks and to validate S. adstringens antibacterial and antifungal effectiveness. Yields of tannins were quantified by colorimetric assay following methodology described in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia and the antimicrobial activity was determined by microdilution technique proposed by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards using S. adstringens hydroalcoholic and aqueous extracts and semi-purified fractions. Investigated extracts did not present significant antibacterial activity though aqueous extracts exhibited antifungal effect against both Trichophyton rubrum mutant and clinical strains (mIC 156 μg/mL). A positive correlation between tannin concentration and antifungal activity was observed and the accessions collected in Delfinópolis (mG) were considered elite.

Is autoimmune hepatitis a frequent finding among HCV patients with intense interface hepatitis?

AIm:To evaluate the overlap of autoimmune hepatitis in hepatitis C virus(HCV)-infected patients with intense interface ***:Among 1759 patients with hepatitis C submitted to liver biopsy,92(5.2%) presented intense interface *** patients were evaluated regarding the presence of antinuclear antibody(ana),anti-smooth muscle antibody(SmA) and anti-liver/kidney microsomal antibody(LKm-1),levels of γ-globulin and histological findings related to autoimmune hepatitis(plasma cell infiltrate and presence of rosettes).RESULTS:Among patients with hepatitis C and intense interface hepatitis there was a low prevalence of autoantibodies(ana=12%,SmA=5%,LKm-1=0%) and the median γ-globulin level was within the normal *** histological findings of autoimmune disease were observed in only two cases(2%).After applying the score for diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis,only one patient was classified with a definitive diagnosis of autoimmune *** overlap with autoimmune hepatitis was not the explanation for the intense necroinflammatory activity in patients with chronic hepatitis C we sought to identify the variables associated with this *** presence of intense interface hepatitis was associated with more advanced age,both at the time of infection and at the time of the biopsy,and higher prevalence of blood transfusion and alcohol ***:Although possible,overlap with autoimmune hepatitis is a very rare association in HCV-infected patients with intense interface hepatitis,an unusual presentation which seems to be related to other host variables.

Floors subjected to mechanical equipment loads frequently present problems associated with excessive vibration which can cause human discomfort or even reduce the structure service *** this context,this work aims to develop an analysis methodology in order to assess the fatigue performance of steel-concrete composite floors,when subjected to vibrations induced by mechanical *** studied structural model corresponds to a steel-concrete composite floor spanning 10 m by 10 m,with a total area of 100 m^(2).The numerical model developed for the dynamic analysis adopted the usual mesh refinement techniques present in finite element method(FEm)simulations implemented in the ANSYS *** investigated floor dynamic response was calculated through the consideration of the dynamic loadings imposed by the mechanical equipment,simulated based on the use of harmonic forces applied on the concrete ***,the dynamic structural response was performed considering several scenarios for the positioning of the equipment,in order to verify the occurrence of excessive *** fatigue assessment is based on a linear cumulative damage rule through the use of the Rainflow-counting algorithm and S-N curves from traditional design *** results of this investigation indicated that the equipment position affects directly the floor dynamic structural response and also significantly influences the structure service life.
