Niche partitioning is a widespread ecological strategy within trophic guilds,ensuring the coexistence of sympatric species by reducing interspecific *** isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen and isotopic niche metrics(width and overlap)are used as a proxy to investigate niche partitioning among species of a *** our study,we investigated if niche partitioning was an ecological mechanism contributing to the coexistence of granivorous birds from the same geographic region along time,employing an isotopic *** sampled and isotopically analyzed(δ^(13)C andδ^(15)N values)wing feathers from 58 specimens of granivorous birds collected between 1900 and 1966 in southeastern *** grouped birds according to the main habitat type used by them(forest:Cyanoloxia brissonii,Leptotila and Leptotila verreauxi;and grassland:Columbina squammata and Sicalis flaveola).We used the Isotopic Richness(IRic)metric to measure the isotopic niche width and the Isotopic Similarity(ISim)and Isotopic Nestedness(INes)metrics to measure the niche overlap between groups and *** results of low isotopic niche overlap suggest that common granivorous birds had a clear niche partitioning in southeastern Brazil in the late past,especially through foraging in distinct habitat types(forest and grassland;ISim=0.1,INes=0.2).Niche overlaps in almost all species-by-species comparisons were low(ISim≤0.3,INes≤0.4),except between *** and ***(ISim=0.6,INes=1.0).These results suggest that these birds,belonging to the same trophic guild,coexisted through niche and resource *** being considered a plastic trophic guild,the isotopic niche partitioning among granivorous birds indicates that each of these species uses a set of specific resources and *** raises an ecological concern about the homogenization of landscapes across the Neotropics,oversimplifying food resources and habitats to granivorous birds.

Aims Mediterranean coastal dunes are habitats of great conservation interest,with a distinctive and rich *** the last century,Acacia spp.,native from Australia,have been introduced in Portugal,with the objective of stabilizing sand dunes,and since have become dominant in numerous sand dune *** invasion process led to the reduction of native plant species richness,changed soil characteristics and modified habitat’s microclimatic *** aim of this research was to typify and compare,in Mediterranean sand dune ecosystems,the ecophysiological responses to drought of Helichrysum italicum and Corema album,two native species,and Acacia longifolia,an exotic invasive *** addressed the following specific objectives:(i)to com-pare water relations and water use efficiencies,(ii)to evaluate water stress,(iii)to assess water use strategies and water sources used by plants and(iv)to evaluate the morphological adaptations at leaf and phyllode *** In order to obtain an integrative view of ecophysiological patterns,water relations and performance measuring methods have been applied:predawn(ψPD)and midday(ψMD)water potential,chloro-phyll a fluorescence,oxygen isotopic composition of xylem,rain and groundwater(δ18O)and leaf carbon isotopic discrimination(Δ13C).The leaf characteristics of the three species,as well as the histochemistry of non-glandular trichome cell walls,were also studied to identify morpho-traits related to drought *** Findings The results support our initial hypothesis:although *** clearly possesses a degree of resistance to water stress,such ability is provided by a different water strategy,when compared to native *** relied on morphological adaptations to restrict water loss,whereas the invasive species adjusted the water uptake as a way to balance their limited ability of restricting water *** corroborate that woody native species(i)have a conservative water-saving strategy an

Evolution of costs of cancer drugs in a Portuguese hospital

AIM:To analyze the costs of cancer drugs administered in a Portuguese Hospital compared with the Karolinska Institute ***:To evaluate spending on cancer drugs, we retrospectively analyzed data on the overall costs of cancer drugs, obtained at the Department of Medical Oncology of the Centro Hospitalar de Entre Douro e Vouga, between 2004 and 2010. In this comparative study we selected only drugs belonging to the following groups:chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and endocrine therapy. The selected drugs were further grouped according to their market placement year:≤ 1998, 1999 to 2002, 2003 to 2005, and 2006 to 2010. Drugs used as supportive therapy and bisphosphonates were ***:The overall costs of cancer drugs increased gradually between 2004 and 2008(from €1911947 to €3666284), with an increase in the number of patients treated during this period. The expenditure decreased in 2009(€3438155) and increased again in 2010(€3673116), but the costs increment was not the same as in previous years. Chemotherapy and targeted therapy were responsible for most of the expenditure. Drugs placed on the national market before 1999 accounted for more than 50% of the expenditure up to 2007. From 2008, these drugs represented less than 50% of the total expenditure. Cancer drugs placed between 1999 and 2002 accounted for 25%-35% of the costs in all the years studied, while drugs placed between 2003 and 2005 accounted for less than 30%. Drugs placed between 2006 and 2010 were responsible for less than 10% of the ***:In this study, older drugs were responsible for most of the expenditure up to 2007, which is in agreement with the Karolinska study.

Background:Animal models are widely used in scientific research in order to obtain information from a whole organism under a specific set of experimental *** lineages of mice have been used to investigate diseases and new therapeutic strategies,and,consequently,hematological and biochemical tests in these laboratory animals are essential to validate scientific *** study seeks to establish reference values for hematological and biochemical parameters of four lineages of ***:We evaluated the hematological and biochemical profiles of 20 males and 20 females from the lineages Swiss(heterogeneous),BALB/c and C57BL/6(isogenic),and B6D2F1(hybrid),totaling 160 *** were standardized using the systems pocH-100iV Diff™for 19 hematological parameters and VITROS®350 for 12 biochemical ***:Results are shown as means and standard deviation,grouped by lineage and *** the values obtained in this study with the values from previous studies,some variations were detected,which could be explained by differences in methodologies or individual ***:Thus our study shows that knowledge and disclosure of the values of physiological parameters of laboratory animals is necessary,and emphasises the importance of considering variations influenced by gender,lineage and genotype in the choice of the best experimental model.

AIM: To evaluate and compare the quality of life of patients submitted to XEN~? implant or trabeculectomy and the relationship with potentially involved ***: A cross-sectional study of patients with advanced open-angle glaucoma who underwent implantation of XEN~?(group 1) and trabeculectomy(group 2) between October 2015 and February 2017. The studied variables were: age, gender, follow-up time, need of topical anti-hypertensive therapy, visual acuity and intraocular pressure(IOP). The quantification of the quality of life was attained through the Glaucoma Symptom Scale(GSS) questionnaire. RESULTS: Totally 34 eyes(34 patients) were included, 17 in each group. The mean GSS scores for group 1 were 42.6±6.8(median, 47; p25, 36.5; p75, 48.5) and for group 2 it was 41.6±7.0(median, 43; p25, 36.5; p75, 47.0; P=0.34). There was a strong negative correlation between the need for topical anti-hypertensive drugs and the GSS result in both groups(r=-0.88, PluSION: The analysis demonstrates the noninferiority of medium-term quality of life of one group in relation to the other(XEN~? implant and trabeculectomy). The number of topical anti-hypertensive drugs and IOP negatively influenced the quality of life.

The concept “fetal programming” shows who still in the intrauterine life, can interfere in factors related to the genesis and development of diseases in childhood, adolescence and adult life. The literature shows that children born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at increased risk for the development of obesity in adulthood, it becomes fundamental to study more about the subject. Obesity is a disease of multifactorial etiology, resulting from complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. However, the marked increase in its incidence, precocity and severity are not yet fully understood. Several findings suggest that stressor stimuli (e.g. diabetes, nutritional changes) during intrauterine development may promote epigenetic changes, as well as affect mitochondrial metabolism, which may modulate fetal development and predispose to the late development of diseases. Despite the considerable amount of evidence accumulated about intrauterine programming for diseases of adult life, the determinant mechanisms of such programming are not yet clear.

Hydrocarbons in particulate samples from wildfire events in central Portugal in summer 2010

In summer 2010, twenty eight （14 PM=2.5 samples plus 14 samples PM2.5-10） smoke samples were collected during wildfires that occurred in central Portugal. A portable high-volume sampler was used to perform the sampling, on quartz fibre filters of coarse （PM=2.5-10） and fine （PM2.5） smoke samples. The carbonaceous content （elemental and organic carbon） of particulate matter was analysed by a thermal-optical technique. Subsequently, the particulate samples were solvent extracted and fractionated by vacuum flash chromatog- raphy into three different classes of organic compounds （aliphatics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） and carbonyl compounds）. The organic speciation was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry （GC-MS）. Emissions were dominated by the fine particles, which represented around 92% of the PM10. A clear predominance of carbonaceous constituents was observed, with organic to elemental carbon （OC/EC） ratios ranging between 1.69 and 245 in both size fractions. The isoprenoid ketone 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone, a tracer for secondary organic aerosol formation, was one of the dominant constituents in both fine and coarse particles. Retene was the most abundant compound in all samples. Good correlations were obtained between OC and both aliphatic and PAH compounds. Pyrogenic processes, thermal release of biogenic com- pounds and secondary processing accounted for 97% of the apportioned PM2.5 levels.
