Sub-chronic effects of a Phthirusa pyrifolia aqueous extract on reproductive function and comparative hormone levels in male rats

Objective: To explore the effects of aqueous extract from Phthirusa pyrifolia leaves(67 mg/kg body weight for 12 days) on the reproductive function of male Wistar rats through oral ***: Animals(n = 30), aged 13 weeks and weighing(378.5 ± 5.0) g, were housed in a vivarium under controlled environmental conditions [photoperiod of 12 h light/dark,temperature of(23 ± 1)C] and were fed standard rations ad libitum. The experiment ran for 12 days, wherein animals were divided into three groups: negative control(n = 6)received water, positive control(n = 12) with finasteride at a concentration of 1.0 mg/kg;and a test group(n = 12) submitted to aqueous extract. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed and submitted to ***: The morphological results of the testes showed that the aqueous extract induced significant changes in the diameter and cross-sectional area of the seminiferous tubules as well as the thickness of the seminiferous epithelium. Furthermore, the extract was able to abruptly decrease testosterone concentrations by about 81.88% in the treated group when compared with the negative control,(47.0 ± 4.8) ng/d l and(255.0 ± 2.0) ng/d l,respectively, and 76.8%,(211.0 ± 8.7) ng/d l, when compared with finasteride. However,the extract causes neither liver damage nor impairment of renal ***: These results suggest that the high amounts of flavonoids shown to be in the extract may be responsible for its hepato-protective effects and suggest a possible decrease in the libido and reproduction of rats.

Dietary supplementation with branchedchain amino acids enhances milk production by lactating sows and the growth of suckling piglets

Gain and ultrafast optical switching in PMMA optical fibers and films doped with luminescent conjugated polymers and oligomers

Conjugated luminescent polymers and oligomers, exhibiting stimulated emission(SE), are dispersed in polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), films and optical fibers,either by blending or upon copolymerisation. With this PMMA doping, we aim to achieve gain and ultrafast optical switching. The modification of the dopant's chemical structure allows the tuning of the SE spectral region. Furthermore, we aim to achieve dopant chain isolation while maximising their concentration. In this paper, we present an overview of the research done in this area in the context of the European Union(EU)-funded research project “plastic optical fibers with embedded active polymers for data communications——POlYCOM”.

Chia Seeds Storage in Different Environmental Conditions and Packages

In general, seeds are not used immediately after harvesting. For this reason, they have to be stored for future use, which requires the maintenance of their viability during the storage time by applying the appropriate conservation technology for each species. This study aimed to evaluate whether package and environmental conditions interfere with the physiological quality of chia seeds (Salvia hispanica l.) stored for 12 months. The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design in a 3?× 3 × 4 factorial scheme, with four replications, using three packages, three storage environments, and four storage times. After each storage time, seeds were subject to germination and vigor tests (emergence and electrical conductivity). Chia seeds can be stored in a cold or dry chamber, in plastic, glass, or paper containers, for 12 months, without hindering seeds physiological quality.

linking the spatiotemporal variation of litterfall to standing vegetation biomass in Brazilian savannas

TlR2 and TlR4 polymorphisms influence m RNA and protein expression in colorectal cancer

AIM: To evaluate the effect of promoter region polymorphisms of toll-like receptor(TlR)2-196 to-174 del and TlR4-1607T/C(rs10759932) on m RNA and protein expression in tumor tissue and of TlR4+896A/G(rs4986790) on colorectal cancer(CRC) ***: The TlR2-196 to-174 del polymorphism was investigated using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and the TlR4-1607T/C and TlR4+896A/G by PCR-restriction fragment length p o l y m o r p h i s m( R F l P). W e g e n o t y p e d 4 3 4 D N A samples from 194 CRC patients and 240 healthy individuals. The m RNA relative quantification(RQ) was performed in 40 tumor tissue samples by quantitative PCR Taq Man assay, using specific probes for TlR2 and TlR4 genes, and ACTB and GAPDH reference geneswere used as endogenous controls. Protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry with specific primary ***: No association was found for TlR4-1607T/C and TlR4+896A/G by three statistical models(logadditive, dominant and recessive). However, based on dominant and log-additive models, the polymorphic variant TlR2-196 to-174 del was associated with increased CRC risk [dominant: odds ratio(OR) = 1.72, 95%CI: 1.03-2.89; P = 0.038 and log-additive: OR =1.59, 95%CI: 1.02-2.48; P = 0.039]. TlR2 m RNA expression was increased in tumor tissue(RQ = 2.36) when compared to adjacent normal tissue(RQ = 1; P lR4 m RNA showed a basal expression(RQ = 0.74 vs RQ = 1, P = 0.452). Immunohistochemistry analysis of TlR2 and TlR4 protein expression was concordant with the findings of m RNA expression. In addition, the TlR2-196 to-174 del variant carriers showed m RNA relative expression 2.19 times higher than wild-genotype carriers. The TlR2 protein expression was also higher for the TlR2-196 to-174 del variant carriers [117 ± 10 arbitrary unit(a.u.) vs 95 ± 4 a.u., P = 0.03]. Peri-intraventricular hemorrhage is one of the main causes of neurological impairment in premature newborns. To control their risk factors is necessary in view of the increasing survival of extreme preterm infants. Construction and Demolition Waste Management Scenario in Republic of Cape Verde—The Case Study of City of Praia

Globally, the construction industry is one of the leading producers of solid waste. The city of Praia, the capital of the Republic of Cape Verde has been suffering from environmental degradation with the irregular disposal of waste caused by inadequate management of waste from construction and also the demolition. The research was developed based on local inspections in the context of environmental laws, in semi-structured interviews with people who deal with this activity and bibliographic references. The main conclusion is that the city does not have a CDW management plan consequently leading to environmental problems. On the other hand, waste of recycled construction can be used as inert reducing the consumption of raw materials that can be used as base and sub-base for paving, landfills, aggregate in mortars and raw materials to be manufactured blocks, bricks concrete tiles, etc.
