colombia enjoys considerable ethnic diversity, although its indigenous population, part of the world＇s shared cultural heritage has been reduced by various factors, including displacement, poverty, and poor access to timely and quality healthcare. The present study is focused on diagnosing health problems, particularly anemia, through a description of hematological findings amongst men and woman aged 18 to 50 years, living at various altitudes, and belonging to several different indigenous communities： the Huitoto and Embera of caqueta, Florencia; the Born, Muinane, Okaina, Huitoto communities of La chorrera, Amazonas; and the Yanaconas of Bogota, D.c. Tests performed included automated hemogram tests, ferritin, c-reactive protein, and parasitological assessment to correlate the presence of anemia and parasitism. The authors used a quantitative and transversal, structured, non-experimental, correlational, stratified sample design with 105 samples （51 men, 54 women）. The results showed that 7.8% （4/51） of the men had anemia, compared with 29.6% （16/54） of the women--more than triple the incidence of the male population. Moreover, we found a higher incidence of anemia in rural areas, where the majority of the country＇s indigenous populations live. In the parasitological study, 87.7% （50/57） of the participants tested positive for intestinal parasites. These findings are expected to help authorities implement more effective responses to health issues in these communities.

The present research focused on a sample of spanish male and female nurses to determine whether psychological variables are related to occupational stress and cortisol. spanish male (n = 98) and female (n = 98) nurses, matched in diverse sociodemographic variables, completed measures of occupational stress, cortisol 8 am (8 h), and cortisol 8 pm (20 h), and psychological variables. Multivariable regression analyses revealed different patterns of association among the variables when analyzing subjective and (occupational stress) objective indicators (cortisol at 8 h and cortisol at 20 h). In male nurses, higher stress is related to worse self-perceived health, worse mental health, less cortisol measured at 8 h, and more morningness. For the female nurses, higher stress is related to being younger, worse self-perceived health, and less job satisfaction. The only similarities found in the target variables and the measures of stress studied in the groups of males and females are worse self-perceived health and worse mental health associated with more occupational stress.

AIM: To analyze the attitude of spanish medical students toward living liver donation (LLD) and to establish which factors have an influence on this ***: study type: A sociological, interdisciplinary, multicenter and observational study. study population: Medical students enrolled in spain (n = 34000) in the university academic year 2010-2011. sample size: A sample of 9598 students stratified by geographical area and academic year. Instrument used to measure attitude: A validated questionnaire (PcID-DVH RIOs) was self-administered and completed anonymously. Data collection procedure: Randomly selected medical schools. The questionnaire was applied to each academic year at compulsory sessions. statistical analysis: student´s t test, χsup>2sup> test and logistic regression ***: The completion rate was 95.7% (n = 9275). 89% (n = 8258) were in favor of related LLD, and 32% (n = 2937) supported unrelated LLD. The following variables were associated with having a more favorable attitude: (1) age (P = 0.008); (2) sex (P < 0.001); (3) academic year (P < 0.001); (4) geographical area (P = 0.013); (5) believing in the possibility of needing a transplant oneself in the future (P < 0.001); (6) attitude toward deceased donation (P < 0.001); (7) attitude toward living kidney donation (P < 0.001); (8) acceptance of a donated liver segment from a family member if one were needed (P < 0.001); (9) having discussed the subject with one’s family (P < 0.001) and friends (P < 0.001); (10) a partner’s opinion about the subject (P < 0.001); (11) carrying out activities of an altruistic nature; and (12) fear of the possible mutilation of the body after donation (P < 0.001).cOncLUsION: spanish medical students have a favorable attitude toward LLD.

The conditions of poverty and violence in colombia have increased the displacement of people of African descent. The research group concerned with the health of these communities has performed research to find the association of alterations in the hemoglobin molecule with the presence of iron deficiency anemia. This research was performed with the support of the epidemiological public health laboratory. The objective of the study is the association of sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait, and the presence of hemoglobin c and its trait, with iron deficiency anemia in Afro-colombians between 18 and 50 years of age, by investigation of hemograms, peripheral blood study, serum ferritin, soluble receptor for transferrin （sTfR） and index of sTfR, and hemoglobin electrophoresis. This research is a descriptive, quantitative, transverse, structured, non-experimental and correlational study, with a total of 56 samples （10 men, 46 women）. The results showed that ferritin in men had normal values, compared to 32% （15/46） of women who had low levels of ferritin. Men＇s sTfR levels were normal, while in women 2% （1/46） had iron deficiency in stage I, 41% （19/46） iron deficiency in stage If, and 9% （4/46） possibly without anemia iron deficiency. In hemoglobin electrophoresis, 84% （46/56） of the population presents hemoglobin A, 4% （2/56） increased hemoglobin A2 and fetal hemoglobin related to a possible thalassemia trait, 11% （6/56） had hemoglobin As related to sickle cell trait, and 2% （1/56） show hemoglobin Ac, related to hemoglobin Ac trait. This project supports investigative and social projects, and also contributes to the improvement of the quality of life and dissemination of good health practices in these communities.

cardiovascular diseases (cVDs) are the leading global cause of mortality and disease burden. statins are the most prescribed lipid-lowering drugs to treat hypercholesterolemia and prevent cVDs. The biochemical mechanism of statins consists of competitive inhibition of the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coA reductase enzyme (HMG-coAR)， the limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. Due to statin intolerance in some patient groups， the search for new inhibitors is a field of great interest. This review focusses on the studies reporting the inhibitory effect of protein hydrolysates and biopeptides on the HMG-coAR enzyme activity. The analysis of the action mechanism and physicochemical characteristics of the HMG-coAR inhibitory peptides revealed that the molecular weight， amino acid composition， charge， and polarity are key aspects of the interaction with the HMG-coAR enzyme. In conclusion， this review reveals the potential of using food peptides as new cholesterol-lowering agents and opens a new interesting field of research. However， clinical approaches are mandatory to confirm their therapeutic hypercholesterolemic effect.

The aim of the present study was to compare the ability of the myricetin and quercetin to modulate the oxidative DNA damage induced by 2-amino-3, 8- dimethylimidazo [4,5-f] quinoxaline (8-MeIQx), 2-amino- 3, 4, 8- trimethylimidazo [4, 5-f]-quinoxaline (4,8-diMeIQx) and 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenyl-imidazo [4,5-b] pyridine (PhIP), in human hepatoma cells. DNA damage (strand breaks and oxidized purines/pyrimidines) was evaluated by the alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis or comet assay. None of the myricetin and quercetin concentrations tested protected against 8-MeIQx, 4, 8-diMeIQx and PhIP-induced DNA strand breaks. The oxidized pyrimidines induced by 4, 8-diMeIQx and PhIP were reduced by myricetin but not by quercetin. Quercetin reduced the oxidized purines induced by 8-MeIQx and PhIP, while myricetin also reduced the induced by 4, 8-diMeIQx. One feasible mechanism by which myricetin and quercetin exert their protective effect towards HcAs-induced oxidative DNA could be related in part to the reduction of human cYP1A1. Another mechanism claimed to be responsible for the protective effect of myricetin and quercetin is the induction of phase II metabolizing enzymes such as UDP-glucuronyltrasferase (UGT). The ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation (cYP1A1) activity was moderately inhibited by myricetin, while little effect was observed by quercetin. On the contrary, quercetin showed the greatest increase on UDP-glucuronyltransferase activity. However, these are not the only mechanisms by which myricetin and quercetin exert their protective effect, other mechanisms such as stimulation of the repair of carc.nogen-induced DNA damage and or the free radical scavenging efficiency have been also implicated. In conclusion, our results clearly indicate that myricetin was more efficient than quercetin to prevent DNA damage (oxidized purines and pyrimidines) induced by the three HcAs evaluated. The treatment of peritoneal carc.nomatosis (Pc) of colorectal origin with cytoreductive surgery(cRs) plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEc) has a 5-year recurrence-free or cure rate of at least 16%, so it is no longer labeled as a fatal disease, and offers prolonged survival for patients with a low peritoneal carc.nomatosis index. Metachronous Pc of colorectal origin is so predictable that there is a model which has been used to successfully determine the individual risk of each patient. Patients at risk are clearly identified; those with the highest risk have small peritoneal nodules present in the first surgery (70% probability of developing Pc), ovarian metastases(60%), perforated tumor onset or intraoperative tumor rupture(50%). current clinical, biological and imaging techniques still lack sufficient sensitivity to diagnose Pc in its initial stages, when cRs plus HIPEc has a greater impact and a higher cure rate. second-look surgery with HIPEc or prophylactic HIPEc at the time of the first intervention have been proposed as means of preventing and/or anticipating clinical or radiological relapse in at-risk patients. Both techniques have shown a significant decrease in peritoneal relapses and should be considered essential weapons in the management of colorectal cancer.
