Introduction: It is a fact that the elderly population has been increasing all around the world and also in Brazil. This has been a challenge for governments and managers in the development of public policies to promote healthy and quality aging. And one of the conditions for healthy aging is to assess the functional capacity and quality of life of elderly people. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the factors that influence the loss of functional capacity and the worsening of the quality of life of a representative sample of elderly people from a medium-sized city in the inner of São Paulo State, Brazil. Methodology: Questionnaires about activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), Flanagan quality of life scale (FQOLS), sociodemographic and morbidities aspects were applied to the elderly people. In order to assess associated factors to functional capacity and quality of life, chi-square tests and logistic regression models were fitted including variables: gender, age group, marital status, income, education level, body mass index, abdominal circumference and some morbidities reported by the elderly people. The level of significance adopted for the statistical tests was 5%. Results: Elderly with age over 75 years old and not married had more risk to be dependent on ADL, while elderly with more than 75 years old, not married, income below one minimal wage, cardiovascular disease and be diabetic had more risk to be dependent by IADL. Already, people with excess of weight had smallest risk to be dependent by IADL, paradoxically. The elderly not married and with an income below a minimum wage had the worst quality of life. Conclusions: Population aging in Brazil is an evident factor, so it is hoped that this study will contribute to the greatest diligence on the issues of the elderly

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks are highly dynamic systems which are very popular for content distribution in the Internet. A single peer remains in the system for an unpredictable amount of time, and the rate in which peers enter and leave the system, i.e. the churn, is often high. A user that is obtaining content from a selected peer is frequently informed that particular peer is not available anymore, and is asked to select another peer, or will have another peer assigned, often without enough checks to confirm that the content provided by the new peer presents the same quality of the previous peer. In this work we present a strategy based on group communication for transparent and robust content access in P2P networks. Instead of accessing a single peer for obtaining the desired content, a user request is received and processed by a group of peers. This group of peers, called PCG (Peer Content Group) provides reliable content access in sense that even as members of the group crash or leave the system, users continue to receive the content if at least one group member remains fault-free. Each PCG member is capable of independently serving the request. A PCG is transparent to the user, as the group interface is identical to the interface provided by a single peer. A group member is elected to serve each request. A fault monitoring component allows the detection of member crashes. If the peer is serving request crashes, another group member is elected to continue providing the service. The PCG and a P2P file sharing applications were implemented in the JXTA platform. Evaluation results are presented showing the latency of group operations and system components.

AIM： To evaluated the therapeutic and prophylactic effect of thalidomide on 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid （TNBS）-induced colitis. Thalidomide has been reported to downregulate the expression of tumor necrosis factor α （TNF-α）, IL-12, and vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF）, hallmarks of intestinal inflammation in Crohn＇s disease （CD）. METHODS： Male Wistar rats were divided in five groups of ten animals each. Four groups received a rectal infusion of TNBS in ethanol. The first group was sacrificed 7 d after colitis induction. The second and third groups received either thalidomide or placebo by gavage and were sacrificed at 14 d. The fourth group received thalidomide 6 h before TNBS administration, and was sacrificed 7 d after induction. The fifth group acted as the control group and colitis was not induced. Histological inflammatory scores of the colon were performed and lamina propria CD4＋ T cells, macrophages, and VEGF＋ cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. TNF-α and IL-12 were quantified in the supernatant of organ cultures by ELISA. RESULTS： Significant reduction in the inflammatory score and in the percentage of VEGF＋ cells was observed in the group treated with thalidomide compared with animals not treated with thalidomide. Both TNF-α and IL-12 levels were significantly reduced among TNBS induced colitis animals treated with thalidomide compared with animals that did not receive thalidomide. TNF-α levels were also significantly reduced among the animals receiving thalidomide prophylaxis compared with untreated animals with TNBS-induced colitis. Intestinal levels of TNF-α and IL-12 were significantly correlated with the inflammatory score and the number of VEGF＋ cells. CONCLUSION： Thalidomide significantly attenuates TNBS-induced colitis by inhibiting the intestinal production of TNF-α, IL-12, and VEGF. This effect may support the use of thalidomide as an alternate approach in selected patients with CD.

This paper examines the properties of wave propagation in transmission lines with periodic LC and CL cells, taking into account ohmic losses in resistors connected in series to lumped capacitors and inductors. First order time differential equations are derived for current and charge, thus allowing analysis of transient regimes of the lines being excited by a pulse of arbitrary shape. In particular we examine the propagation characteristics of periodic lines in which identical unit cells are repeated periodically and also discuss the interpretation of positive and negative phase velocities associated with the LC and CL topologies. Loss effects on the propagation bandwidths of both lines are also discussed, and it is shown that in the left-handed transmission line (CL configuration) the phase advance of the crest of the transmitted signal with respect to the source signal is due to the intrinsic dispersive nature of the CL line which, in contrast to the LC line, is highly dispersive at low propagation factors.

Tailoring the partitioning of proteins using ionic liquids as adjuvants in polymer-polymer aqueous biphasic systems

Aqueous biphasic systems(ABS)are promising for proteins purification;however,when dealing with samples comprising several proteins,the selectivity towards a target protein is difficult to *** this work,the addition of ionic liquids(ILs)as adjuvants(5 wt%and 10 wt%)in ABS composed of polyethylene glycol(PEG)and dextran was investigated to tailor proteins partitioning between the coexisting *** liquid-liquid phase diagrams were determined at 298 K,followed by partition studies of three proteins(bovine serum albumin(BSA),immunoglobulin G(IgG),and cytochrome C(Cyt C)).Partition coefficients of IgG and BSA indicate the preference of both proteins to the dextran-rich phase,whereas Cyt C has no preferential partitioning between the *** addition of chloride-based ILs as adjuvants allows to increase or decrease the partition coefficients,thus tailoring the proteins partitioning between the *** partitioning essentially depends on the IL content in each phase,whereas Cyt C and IgG partitioning is ruled by the ILs chemical structure and established *** docking was carried out to address the ILs effect on the proteins partitioning,supporting experimental observations,while identifying the specific interactions *** partition of each protein in polymer-salt ABS with ILs as adjuvants was determined,demonstrating the higher tailoring ability of polymer-polymer ABS when adding ***,the partition of each protein in presence of the remaining ones was determined,as well as the selectivity of the studied systems to separate each pair of proteins,paving the way for their use in liquidliquid chromatography.

Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a common reactive gingival lesion that histologically resembles the central giant cell granuloma, and is a central lesion of the jaws. Occasionally, central giant cell granuloma-like lesions may be seen in association with hyperparathyroidism. Rarely, PGCG-like lesions have been described in a background of hyperparathyroidism. We describe the case of a 91-year-old woman taking teriparatide for the treatment of osteoporosis and presented with a peripheral giant cell granuloma of the mandibular posterior area.
