Cervical uterine cancer represents the fourth most common malignant neoplasm worldwide in the female sex in terms of incidence, principally from epithelial origen. The high expression of EGFR in this tumor leads to the search for therapeutic alternatives. An Expanded Access Clinical Program was carried out in parallel groups, randomized, multicenter and prospective study, to evaluate the survival of patients with advanced cervical carcinoma, without therapeutic alternative, who would be treated with the therapeutic vaccine CIMAvax-EGF®, the humanized mAb nimotuzumab or the combination of both products, which targeted EGF and EGFR respectively. The patients were included between 2008 and 2010 with a more than five years follow-up. Plant-based bioproduction of insect sex pheromones has been proposed as an innovative strategy to increase the sustainability of pest control in ***,we describe the engineering of transgenic plants producing(Z)-11-hexadecenol(Z11-16OH)and(Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate(Z11-16OAc),two main volatile components in many Lepidoptera sex pheromone *** assembled multigene DNA constructs encoding the pheromone biosynthetic pathway and stably transformed them into Nicotiana benthamiana *** constructs contained the Amyelois transitella AtrΔ11 desaturase gene,the Helicoverpa armigera fatty acyl reductase HarFAR gene,and the Euonymus alatus diacylglycerol acetyltransferase EaDAct gene in different *** the pheromone-producing plants showed dwarf phenotypes,the severity of which correlated with pheromone *** but one of the recovered lines produced high levels of Z11-16OH,but very low levels of Z11-16OAc,probably as a result of recurrent truncations at the level of the EaDAct *** one plant line(SxPv1.2)was recovered that harboured an intact pheromone pathway and which produced moderate levels of Z11-16OAc(11.8μg g^(-1) FW)and high levels of Z11-16OH(111.4μg g^(-1)).Z11-16OAc production was accompanied in SxPv1.2 by a partial recovery of the dwarf ***1.2 was used to estimate the rates of volatile pheromone release,which resulted in 8.48 ng g-1 FW per day for Z11-16OH and 9.44 ng g^(-1 )FW per day for *** results suggest that pheromone release acts as a limiting factor in pheromone biodispenser strategies and establish a roadmap for biotechnological improvements.

Cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Diaphragm injury is observed in patients with COPD. However, the potential role of smoking in triggering or perpetuating muscle injury is unknown. The present study was aimed at evaluating the potential role of commercial tobacco smoke as a direct cause of skeletal muscle injury in experimental conditions. Seventy Wistar rats (170 - 250 g) were assigned to smoking (n = 49) or non-smoking (n = 21) groups. The smoking groups were submitted to a single or multiple (i.e., five or thirty) daily sessions of cigarette smoking in an inhalatory chamber (time length: 2 h each session). The level of exposure was constant and assessed by CO concentrations (50 ppm) and serum cotinine analysis. Animals submitted to a single smoke exposure and the corresponding controls were euthanized in groups at 0 h, 2 h, 4 h, 24 h or 48 h after completing the exposure. Animals submitted to multiple exposures were euthanized at 0 h after smoking. Samples from vastus lateralis muscle were obtained and processed for assessing cell injury and selected protein expression. Monoclonal anti-albumin antibodies were used to identify muscle fibers with sarcolemmal (membrane) injury. Subcellular muscle injury was assessed using transmission electron microscopy (EM). MyoD, myogenin and α-tubulin were immunodetected using western blot techniques. Exposure to cigarette smoke associated with significant membrane damage (mean relative difference (MRD) with controls: +181%, p = 0.004) and sarcomere disruptions (MRD: +226%, p = 0.001). Expression of MyoD and myogenin (normalized to α-tubulin) were significantly increased at 4 h and remained increased at 48 h post-exposure. We conclude that not only a single but also consecutive exposure to tobacco smoke have acute deleterious effects on peripheral muscle structure.
