Imperfect mimicry of host begging calls by a brood parasitic cuckoo:a cue for nestling rejection by hosts?

Coevolutionary interactions between avian brood parasites and their hosts often lead to the evolution of discrimination and rejection of parasite eggs or chicks by hosts based on visual cues,and the evolution of visual mimicry of host eggs or chicks by brood *** may also base rejection of brood parasite nestlings on vocal cues,which would in turn select for mimicry of host begging calls in brood parasite *** cuckoos that exploit multiple hosts with different begging calls,call structure may be plastic,allowing nestlings to modify their calls to match those of their various hosts,or fixed,in which case we would predict either imperfect mimicry or divergence of the species into host-specific *** our study of the little bronze-cuckoo(LBC)Chalcites minutillus and its primary host,the large-billed gerygone Gerygone magnirostris,we tested whether:(1)hosts use nestling vocalizations as a cue to discriminate cuckoo chicks;(2)cuckoo nestlings mimic the host begging calls throughout the nestling period;and(3)the cuckoo begging calls are plastic,thereby facilitating mimicry of the calls of different *** found that the begging calls of LBCs are most similar to their gerygone hosts shortly after hatching(when rejection by hosts typically occurs)but become less similar as cuckoo chicks get *** call structure may be used as a cue for rejection by hosts,and these results are consistent with gerygone defenses selecting for age-specific vocal mimicry in cuckoo *** found no evidence that LBC begging calls were plastic.

Objective:To investigate malaria prevalence and socio-economic conditions in east Timor. Methods:Blood samples were collected from 650 individuals distributed among six districts in east Timor.434 and 216 individuals were sampled by passive and active case detection, respectively(PCD,ACD).Results:The results showed that the plasmodium infection prevalence was 18.9%with predominance of Plasmodium falciparum(***) infections(60.2%). The majority of cases were detected in children between 2-14 years old in both PCD and ACD. Participants residing in Same and Lospalos were at a higher risk of *** percentage of infections associated to the lack of bed net use was twice as high as users(25.2%vs 12.5%). The prevalence of malaria among participants who lived in brick/cement houses(8.3%) was two times less than those who lived in other types of houses(3.7%).There was a significantly lower prevalence of infection detected in individuals living in complete housing constructions with absence of domestic animals in or near the ***:The major risk factors for malaria in east Timor are age,lack of bed net use,incomplete housing constructions and exposure to mosquitoes.

An easy,accurate and efficient procedure to create forest fire risk maps using the SeXTANTe plugin Modeler

To prevent, detect, and protect against forest fires, forest personnel need to define rules for determining forest fire risk. In Portugal, all municipalities must annually produce forest fire risk （FFR） maps. To produce more reliable FFR maps more easily, we developed an open source model using the Modeler plugin of SeXTANTe in the program QGIS version 2.0 Dufour. The model provides all the maps involved in the FFR model （susceptibility map, hazard map, vulnerability map, economic value map, and potential loss map） and was produced according to Portuguese Forest Authority＇s （AFN, Autoridade Florestal Nacional） rules for determining the FFR. This model was tested for the Portuguese municipality Santa Maria da Feira, where 40 % of the total municipality area falls in the category ＂very high＂ or ＂high＂ fire risk. The ＂very high＂ fire risk area is mainly classified as broad-leaved forest and has the steepest slopes （〉15 %）. The distance of burned areas to roads was also analyzed; the proportion of burned areas increased with increasing distance to the main roads. In addition, 92.6 % of the ＂high＂ and ＂very high＂ risk zones were located in areas with lower elevation. These results confirmed that forest fire is strongly influenced not only by environmental factors but also by anthropogenic factors. The procedure implemented here was compared with our open source application already available in QGIS and also to the same procedure implemented in GIS pro- prietary software. Although the results were obviously the same, the model developed here presents several advan- tages over the other two approaches. Besides being faster, it is easy to change the model parameters according to user needs （i.e., to the rules of different countries）, and can be modified and adapted to other variables and other areas to create risk maps for different natural phenomena （e.g., floods, earthquakes, landslides）. On the Semiprimitivity and Semiprimality Problems for Partial Smash Products

In this paper we discuss about the semiprimitivity and the semiprimality of partial smash products. Let H be a semisimple Hopf algebra over a field k and let A be a left partial H-module algebra. We study the H-prime and the H-Jacobson radicals of A and their relations with the prime and the Jacobson radicals of A#H, respectively. In particular, we prove that if A is H-semiprimitive, then A^fH is semiprimitive provided that all irreducible representations of A are finite-dimensional, or A is an affine PI-algebra over k and k is a perfect field, or A is locally finite. Moreover, we prove that A=#=H is semiprime provided that A is an H-semiprime PI-algebra, generalizing to the setting of partial actions the known results for global actions of Hopf algebras.

Purines have a recognized importance as intercellular mes- sengers. These molecules play an important role in the de- velopment and maintenance of the central nervous system （CNS）, as well as in its response to pathological conditions. Both adenine and guanine-based purines can be released from astrocytes, where they play a relevant role as extracel- lular signaling molecules. Particularly, the nucleoside gua- nosine has been proposed as an extracellular molecule that regulates the response of CNS to damage. Following injury, this nucleoside attains high concentrations in the extracel- lular space, where it activates multiple signaling pathways.

Diagnostic criteria for autoimmune hepatitis in children: A challenge for pediatric hepatologists

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a progressive inflammatory liver disorder that is rare in children and adolescents. AIH has a broad clinical spectrum and a quick response to treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive medication. The available diagnosis criteria have limitations and should be evaluated in pediatric populations. Recently, some studies reported that the 2008 simplified diagnostic criteria for AIH could be used in children with high sensibility and specificity. In addition, the authors reported that globulin and immunoglobulin G levels can be used interchangeably for diagnostic purposes. They also demonstrated that the 2008 simplified criteria fail in identifying patients with fulminant hepatic failure. Here, we discuss the limitations of the use of these criteria in pediatric patients and the requirement of more studies to improve the diagnosis of AIH in children.
