In this paper,the lanthanoid complexes of n_(5) and n_(6) macrocycle ligands,without pendant arms or additional heteroatoms,are surveyed.This review covers the period from 2015 to the current date,since in 2014 Schiff base macrocyclic ligands incorporating the pyridine moiety,and their complexes,were revised,and in 2015 the chemistry of pentaaza macrocycle ligands with rare earth metals was also summarized.Porphyrin and phthalocyanine ligands are not included in this review,which primarily focuses on complexes with Schiff bases and amines without pendant arms or any additional donor other than nitrogen.The synthetic methods,structural characterization,based on single X-ray crystal data,and properties of the lanthanoid complexes,with special attention to magneto-structural correlations,are presented herein.

MicroRnAs(miRnAs),small non-coding RnAs composed of 18–24 nucleotides,are potent regulators of gene expression,contributing to the regulation of more than 30%of protein-coding genes.Considering that miRnAs are regulators of inflammatory pathways and the differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells,there is an interest in exploring their importance in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).IBD is a chronic and multifactorial disease of the gastrointestinal tract;the main forms are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.Several studies have investigated the dysregulated expression of miRnAs in IBD,demonstrating their important roles as regulators and potential biomarkers of this disease.This editorial presents what is known and what is expected regarding miRnAs in IBD.Although the important regulatory roles of miRnAs in IBD are clearly established,biomarkers for IBD that can be applied in clinical practice are lacking,emphasizing the importance of further studies.Discoveries regarding the influence of miRnAs on the inflammatory process and the exploration of their role in gene regulation are expected to provide a basis for the use of miRnAs not only as potent biomarkers in IBD but also as therapeutic targets for the control of inflammatory processes in personalized medicine.

Detection of Antinuclear Antibodies in Canine Serum by Immunoperoxidase in MDCK and Indirect Immunofluorescence in HEp2 Cells

Antinuclear antibodies are found in animals suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and some other diseases, their presence in the blood is determined by antinuclear antibody (ana) test using indirect immunofluorescence (IF) with HEp2 cells as a substrate. In this work, an immunoperoxidase (IP) assay was developed to evaluate the anas in canine sera, using canine kidney cell lines (MDCK) and compared with a commercial immunofluorescence test on Hep2 cells for this system, a fluoresceinated anti-canine Ig antibody was standardized. The study was performed on 50 sera from dogs submitted to the laboratory with different clinical diagnoses of autoimmune-associated diseases. The procedures on both cells were unified to perform comparisons of the reactions, direct sera or at different dilutions were added to a monolayer of permeabilized MDCK cells, followed by a peroxidized anti-canine IgG conjugate, and a substrate for the IP reaction. The same sera were tested on the commercial IF assay on Hep2 cell system. In 22/50 cases, the presence of LE cells in peripheral blood was determined. A high correlation was found in the detection of antinuclear antibodies between both cell lines and techniques, however there were differences in the reaction patterns in the nucleus and cytoplasm between cell lines. The diffuse nuclear pattern observed in MDCK cells was more related to the presence of high percentages of LE cells in peripheral blood. The differences found in the results were possibly associated with the presence of homologous antigens between the MDCK cells and the dog. In addition, the methodology and standardization for the use and interpretation of a reference serum was developed to unify the interpretation criteria in the laboratory.

According to World Health Organization(WHO)estimates,in 2020,there were 1.8 million human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-infected children below 15 years old living with HIV and 150,000 children who acquired the infection[1].Every year,110,000 children die as a consequence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome-related causes[2].As in adults,optimal management of infected children depends on early diagnosis and treatment with antiretroviral drugs based on their viral genotype.

BACKGROUnD A previous study compared vortexing and Maki techniques for the diagnosis of catheter-related bloodstream infection(CRBSI),and concluded that vortexing was not superior to Maki method.AIM To determine whether the combined use of vortexing and Maki techniques provides profitability versus the Maki technique for the diagnosis of catheter tip colonization(CTC)and CRBSI.METHODS Observational and prospective study carried out in an Intensive Care Unit.Patients with suspected catheter-related infection(CRI)and with one central venous catheter for at least 7 days were included.The area under the curve(AUC)of the Maki technique,the vortexing technique and the combination of both techniques for the diagnosis of CTC and CRBSI were compared.RESULTS We included 136 episodes of suspected CRI.We found 21 cases of CTC of which 10 were also CRBSI cases.Of the 21 CTC episodes,18(85.7%)were diagnosed by Maki technique and vortexing technique,3(14.3%)only by the technique of Maki,and none only by technique of vortexing.Of the 10 CRBSI episodes,9(90.0%)were diagnosed by the techniques of Maki and vortexing,1(10.0%)was diagnosed only by the technique of Maki,and none only by the technique of vortexing.We no found differences in the comparison of AUC between the technique of Maki and the combination of Maki and vortexing techniques for the diagnosis of CTC(P=0.99)and CRBSI(P=0.99).COnCLUSIOn The novel finding of our study was that the combined use of vortexing and Maki techniques did not provide profitability to the technique of Maki alone to CRBSI diagnosis of.

Background Fanconi-Debré-de Toni syndrome(also known as Fanconi renotubular syndrome,or FRST)profoundly increased the understanding of the functions of the proximal convoluted tubule(PCT)and provided important insights into the pathophysiology of several kidney diseases and drug toxicities.Data sources We searched Pubmed and Scopus databases to find relevant articles about FRST.This review article focuses on the physiology of the PCT,as well as on the physiopathology of FRST in children,its diagnosis,and treatment.Results FRST encompasses a wide variety of inherited and acquired PCT alterations that lead to impairment of PCT reab-sorption.In children,FRST often presents as a secondary feature of systemic disorders that impair energy supply,such as Lowe's syndrome,Dent's disease,cystinosis,hereditary fructose intolerance,galactosemia,tyrosinemia,Alport syndrome,and Wilson's disease.Although rare,congenital causes of FRST greatly impact the morbidity and mortality of patients and impose diagnostic challenges.Furthermore,its treatment is diverse and considers the ability of the clinician to identify the correct etiology of the disease.Conclusion The early diagnosis and treatment of pediatric patients with FRST improve the prognosis and the quality of life.

The gut microbiota is a complex community of microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tracts of humans,living in symbiosis with the host.Dysbiosis,characterized by an imbalance between the beneficial and opportunistic gut microbiota,is associated with several gastrointestinal disorders,such as irritable bowel syndrome(IBS);inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),represented by ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease;and colorectal cancer(CRC).Dysbiosis can disrupt the mucosal barrier,resulting in perpetuation of inflammation and carcinogenesis.The increase in some specific groups of harmful bacteria,such as Escherichia coli(E.coli)and enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis(ETBF),has been associated with chronic tissue inflammation and the release of pro-inflammatory and carcinogenic mediators,increasing the chance of developing CRC,following the inflammationdysplasia-cancer sequence in IBD patients.Therefore,the aim of the present review was to analyze the correlation between changes in the gut microbiota and the development and maintenance of IBD,CRC,and IBD-associated CRC.Patients with IBD and CRC have shown reduced bacterial diversity and abundance compared to healthy individuals,with enrichment of Firmicute sand Bacteroidetes.Specific bacteria are also associated with the onset and progression of CRC,such as Fusobacterium nucleatum,E.coli,Enterococcus faecalis,Streptococcus gallolyticus,and ETBF.Future research can evaluate the advantages of modulating the gut microbiota as preventive measures in CRC high-risk patients,directly affecting the prognosis of the disease and the quality of life of patients.

Triadimefon(TDM)and cyproconazole(CPZ)are two triazoles widely used as fungicides.Several azoles were synthe-sised starting from commercial TDM and CPZ.The compounds were evaluated against phytopathogenic filamentous fungi,including Aspergillus fumigatus(AF),A.niger(An),A.ustus(AU),A.japonicus(AJ),A.terreus(AT),Fusarium oxyspo-rum and Botrytis cinerea isolated from grapevine in the province of San Juan,Argentina.Three of the synthesised compounds(1-(Biphenyl-4-yloxy)-3,3-dimethyl-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butan-2-one,1;2-(Biphenyl-4-yl)-3-cyclopropyl-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butan-2-ol,3;3-Cyclopropyl-2-(4’-fluorobiphenyl-4-yl)-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol1-yl)butan-2-ol,4)presented remarkable in vitro fungicidal properties,with better effects than TDM and CPZ on some of the target fungi.Cytotoxicity was assessed using human lung fibroblasts MRC5.Derivative 1,with IC50 values of 389.4μM,was less toxic towards MRC-5 human lung fibroblasts than commercial TDM(248.5μM)and CPZ(267.4μM).Docking analysis and molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the compounds present the same interaction in the binding pocket of the CYP51B enzyme and with the same amino acids as CPZ.The derivatives investigated could be considered broad-spectrum but with some selectivity towards imperfect fungi.

Hydrocarbons in particulate samples from wildfire events in central Portugal in summer 2010

In summer 2010, twenty eight （14 PM=2.5 samples plus 14 samples PM2.5-10） smoke samples were collected during wildfires that occurred in central Portugal. A portable high-volume sampler was used to perform the sampling, on quartz fibre filters of coarse （PM=2.5-10） and fine （PM2.5） smoke samples. The carbonaceous content （elemental and organic carbon） of particulate matter was analysed by a thermal-optical technique. Subsequently, the particulate samples were solvent extracted and fractionated by vacuum flash chromatog- raphy into three different classes of organic compounds （aliphatics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） and carbonyl compounds）. The organic speciation was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry （GC-MS）. Emissions were dominated by the fine particles, which represented around 92% of the PM10. A clear predominance of carbonaceous constituents was observed, with organic to elemental carbon （OC/EC） ratios ranging between 1.69 and 245 in both size fractions. The isoprenoid ketone 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone, a tracer for secondary organic aerosol formation, was one of the dominant constituents in both fine and coarse particles. Retene was the most abundant compound in all samples. Good correlations were obtained between OC and both aliphatic and PAH compounds. Pyrogenic processes, thermal release of biogenic com- pounds and secondary processing accounted for 97% of the apportioned PM2.5 levels.
