Passive Heating Systems:A Case Study in a Brazilian Mountainous Region

The study of thermal comfort in the built environment is of great relevance since it stimulates the development of more sustainable buildings suited to the local climate and able to meet the human need for *** objective of this research was to develop,construct and test a passive heating system adaptable to existing buildings,reducing the need for major interventions and increasing thermal comfort in the indoor *** adopted methodological approach was a case study in a single-family residence located in the Brazilian city of Petrópolis,a mountainous region with a humid subtropical climate and a rigorous *** proposed passive heating system is totally isolated,thus mitigating air infiltration and promoting increase of temperature in the internal environment through the absorption of solar energy and greenhouse *** kind of solution is especially interesting for residents of this region,since most of the city buildings are not adequately prepared to handle low ***,given local climatic conditions,residents need to spend a lot of money on the acquisition and operation of electric or gas heating *** results indicated that the developed system,in fact,increased the temperature of the studied room when compared to an adjacent room,which did not receive the *** findings of this paper,therefore,provide a valuable reference for experts and practitioners in the selection of heating systems to be used in cold regions,and proved that passive systems can provide thermal comfort at the same time that optimize the interaction of the building with the local ecosystem.

The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

Aims:We aimed to compare cancer survivors’fatigue expression with that of the general population and examine psychobiological factors associated with ***:In this quantitative,transversal study,we analyzed clinical and sociodemographic indicators of 389 participants(68.38%females):148 cancer survivors on active treatment,55 disease-free survivors,75 patients with another chronic disease,and 111 healthy ***:Fatigue was expressed dissimilarly in patients with a previous history of cancer and participants without a history of *** on active treatment reported significantly higher levels of fatigue than the other clinical status ***,some level of cancer-related fatigue persisted,in a similar pattern,after active treatment into the survivorship ***-free survivors showed significantly lower vigor levels when compared to patients with other chronic *** distress and daytime sleepiness emerged as transdiagnostic factors associated with ***:Cancer-related fatigue may have a unique pattern,characterized by reduced endurance and muscle *** the present study,psychological distress and daytime sleepiness are associated with cancer-related *** findings suggest the pertinence of future studies examining whether interventions targeting those factors may help manage this burdensome complaint.

Adsorbents Derived from Xylan Hemicellulose with Removal Properties of Pollutant Metals

The adsorption capacity of hydrogels derived from modified xylan hemicellulose has been tested in order to develop new bio-based adsorbent materials useful for removing metal ions pollutants,such as Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ)and Pb(Ⅱ)from an aqueous *** was extracted from bleached kraft pulp of eucalyptus and subsequently modified with different proportions of functional sulfonic acid groups(HA3-HA7)and sulfonate groups(HS30-HS70)to generate *** results showed that all the synthesized hydrogels were capable of adsorbing metal ions,being the hydrogels with 30%and 50%xylan the ones that presented the highest adsorption *** capacity studies at different initial concentrations revealed that at an initial concentration of 300 mg·l-1,the HA3 hydrogel presented an adsorption capacity of 193mg Pb(Ⅱ),182 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 66 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HA5 hydrogel presented a capacity of 185 mg Pb(Ⅱ),113 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 48 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HS30 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption of 205 mg Pb(Ⅱ),174 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 71 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g hydrogel,and HS50 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption capacity of 273 mg Pb(Ⅱ),143 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 45 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** results show that modified Xylan hemicellulose is a promising adsorbent for removal Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ),and Pb(Ⅱ)ions from aqueous solutions.

Noninvasive diagnosis of periportal fibrosis in schistosomiasis mansoni:A comprehensive review

Schistosomiasis mansoni is a neglected disease and key public health problem,mainly due to its high prevalence,the scarcity of public policies,and the severity of some clinical *** fibrosis(PPF)is the commonest complication of chronic schistosomiasis mansoni and its diagnosis requires different *** though wedge biopsy of the liver is considered the gold standard,it is not justified in non-surgical patients,and percutaneous liver biopsy may be informative but does not have sufficient *** PPF tests mostly include biological(serum biomarkers or combined scores)or physical assessments(imaging assessment of fibrosis pattern or tissue stiffness).Moreover,imaging techniques,such as ultrasound,computed tomography,magnetic resonance imaging,and elastography are applied not only to support the diagnosis of schistosomiasis,but also to assess and detect signs of portal hypertension and organ damage due to chronic schistosomiasis.A combination between a comprehensive history and physical examination with biomarkers for liver fibrosis and imaging methods seems to offer the best approach for evaluating these *** addition,understanding their strengths and limitations will allow a more accurate interpretation in the clinical context and can lead to greater accuracy in estimating the degree of fibrosis in patients with Schistosomiasis mansoni(***)*** review will discuss the different noninvasive methods that are currently available for the evaluation of PPF in *** infection,and their application,advantages,and limitations in clinical practice.

Effects of quantitative feed restriction and sex on carcass traits,meat quality and meat lipid profile of Morada Nova lambs

Background: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feed restriction(FR) and sex on the quantitative and qualitative carcass traits of Morada Nova lambs. Thirty-five animals with an initial body weight of 14.5 ± 0.89 kg and age of 120 d were used in a completely randomized study with a 3 × 3 factorial scheme consisting of three sexes(11 entire males, 12 castrated males and 12 females) and three levels of feeding(ad libitum – Al and 30% and 60% FR).Results: Entire males presented greater hot and cold carcass weights(P llowed by castrated males and females. However, the hot carcass yield was higher for females and castrated males than for entire males. luminosity values were influenced(P les presenting higher values than castrated males and *** showed higher(P linoleic acid and arachidonic acid in the meat of the longissimus thoracis muscle. The meat of animals submitted to Al intake and 30% FR showed similar(P > 0.05) concentrations, and the concentrations of palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and conjugated linoleic acid were higher(P ls with 60% FR. The meat of females had a higher ω6/ω3 ratio and lower h/H ratio, and females had greater levels of feeding. The meat of animals on the 60% FR diet had a greater ω6/ω3 ratio, lower h/H ratio and lower concentration of desirable fatty acids in addition to a greater atherogenicity index(AI) and thrombogenicity index(TI).Conclusion: lambs of different sexes had carcasses with different quantitative traits without total influence on the chemical and physical meat characteristics. The lipid profile of the meat was less favorable to consumer health when the animals were female or submitted to 60% feed restriction.

Appropriateness of the study of iron deficiency anemia prior to referral for small bowel evaluation at a tertiary center

To evaluate the adequacy of the study of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in real life practice prior to referral to a gastroenterology department for small bowel evaluation. METHODSAll consecutive patients referred to a gastroenterology department for small bowel investigation due to iron deficiency anemia, between January 2013 and December 2015 were included. Both patients referred from general practitioners or directly from different hospital departments were selected. Relevant clinical information regarding prior anemia workup was retrospectively collected from medical records. An appropriate pre-referral study was considered the execution of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) investigation, colonoscopy with quality standards (recent, total and with adequate preparation) and celiac disease (CD) screening (through serologic testing and/or histopathological investigation). RESUlTSA total of 77 patients (58.4% female, mean age 67.1 ± 16.7 years) were included. Most (53.2%) patients were referred from general practitioners, 41.6% from other hospital specialties and 5.2% directly from the emergency department. The mean pre-referral hemoglobin concentration was 8.8 ± 2.0 g/dl and the majority of anemias had microcytic (71.4%) and hypochromic (72.7%) characteristics. 77.9% of patients presented with an incomplete pre-referral study: EGD in 97.4%, with H. pylori investigation in 58.3%, colonoscopy with quality criteria in 63.6%, and CD screening in 24.7%. In vitro antileishmanial effects of Physalis angulata root extract on leishmania infantum

Objective： In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the aqueous extract of Physalis angulata root （AEPa） on leishmania infanturn proliferation, morphology, and the driving mechanism in leishmanicidal activity and modulatory action on macrophages. Methods： I., infantum promastigotes were treated with 50 and 100 μg/ml AEPa for 72 h and then antipro- mastigote assay was performed by counts in a Newbauer chamber, morphological changes were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and the mechanism of the leishmanicidal activity was detected. In addition, macrophages were infected with l. infantum and were used to evaluate anti-amastigote activity of AEPa and effects of AEPa on cytokine secretion after 72-hour treatment. Results： Treatment with AEPa reduced the numbers ofl infantum promastigotes （50% inhibitory concen- tration （ICso） = 65.9μg/ml; selectivity index （SI）= 22.1） and amastigotes （ICso = 37.9 μg/ml; SI = 38.5） compared with the untreated control. Amphotericin B reduced 100% of the promastigote numbers after 72 h of treatment （IC50 = 0.2μg/ml）. AEPa induced several morphological changes and increased the production of reactive oxygen species and apoptotic death in promastigotes after treating for 72 h. AEPa （100 μg/ml） promoted tumor necrosis factor-α secretion in macrophages infected with l. infantum after 72 h of treatment, but did not induce an increase in this cytokine in noninfected macrophages. In addition, AEPa showed no cytotoxic effect on J774-A1 cells （50% cytotoxic concentration 〉1000μg/ml）. Conclusion： AEPa presented antileishmanial activity against the promastigotes and amastigotes of I.. infantum without macrophage cytotoxicity; these results show that natural products such as P. angulata have leishmanicidal potential and in the future may be an alternative treatment for leishmaniasis.

Skin is widely used as a drug delivery route due to its easy access and the possibility of using relatively painless methods for the administration of bioactive ***,the barrier properties of the skin,along with its multilayer structure,impose severe restrictions on drug transport and ***,bioengineered models aimed at emulating the skin have been developed not only for optimizing the transdermal transport of different drugs and testing the safety and toxicity of substances but also for understanding the biological processes behind skin *** though in vivo research is often preferred to study biological processes involving the skin,in vitro and ex vivo strategies have been gaining increasing relevance in recent ***,there is a noticeably increasing adoption of in vitro and ex vivo methods by internationally accepted ***,microfluidic organ-on-a-chip devices are nowadays emerging as valuable tools for functional and behavioural skin *** in miniaturization,automation and reliability still need to be addressed in order to create skin models that can predict skin behaviour in a robust,high-throughput manner,while being compliant with regulatory issues,standards and *** this review,skin models for transdermal transport,wound repair and cutaneous toxicity will be discussed with a focus on high-throughput *** microfluidic strategies driven by advancements in microfabrication technologies will also be revised as a way to improve the efficiency of existing models,both in terms of complexity and throughput.

AIM: To study the therapeutic effect of three tubeguides with electrical conductivity associated to mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) on neuro-muscular regeneration after ***: Rats with 10-mm gap nerve injury were tested using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), PVA-carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and MSCs, and PVA-polypyrrole(PPy). The regenerated nerves and tibialis anterior muscles were processed for stereological studies after 20 wk. The functional recovery was assessed serially for gait biomechanical analysis, by extensor postural thrust, sciatic functional index and static sciatic functionalindex(SSI), and by withdrawal reflex latency(WRl). In vitro studies included cytocompatibility, flow cytometry, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and karyotype analysis of the MSCs. Histopathology of lung, liver, kidneys, and regional lymph nodes ensured the biomaterials biocompatibility. RESUlTS: SSI remained negative throughout and independently from treatment. Differences between treted groups in the severity of changes in WRl existed, showing a faster regeneration for PVA-CNTs-MSCs(P less acute ankle joint angles were seen for PVA-CNTs-MSCs group(P = 0.051) suggesting improved ankle muscles function during the push off phase of the gait cycle. In PVA-PPy and PVA-CNTs groups, there was a 25% and 42% increase of average fiber area and a 13% and 21% increase of the "minimal Feret's diameter" respectively. Stereological analysis disclosed a significantly(P lin thickness(M), ratio myelin thickness/axon diameter(M/d) and ratio axon diameter/fiber diameter(d/D; g-ratio) in PVA-CNT-MSCs group(P lUSION: Results revealed that treatment with MSCs and PVA-CNTs tube-guides induced better nerve fiber regeneration. Functional and kinematics analysis revealed positive synergistic effects brought by MSCs and PVA-CNTs.
