Objective: To evaluate the structural and chemical composition of plant and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities promoted by hexanic, ethanolic and ethyl acetate fractions obtained from leaves of Conocarpus ***: Organic fractions were characterized through UPLC-MS and *** potential was performed through DPPH and molybdenum phosphate *** and antifungal assays were performed in accordance with Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute ***: The obtained biomass of Conocarpus erectus leaves showed the high presence of glucose(0.45 g/L), cellulose(28.69%), Na(55.126 μg/L) and K(31.163 μg/L).We identified seven compounds in the hexanic and ethyl acetate fractions, and eight compounds in ethanolic ***, phenolic compounds are prevalent in all organic fractions with values of(10.04 ± 0.24),(221.26 ± 1.84),(340.53 ± 0.84) mg/g GAE to hexanic, ethyl acetate and ethanolic fraction, *** results showed a high potential in ethyl acetate fraction(71.82 ± 6.87)% and(10.89 ± 0.05)% in DPPH and molybdenum phosphate techniques, *** ethanolic fraction showed moderate bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and presented a high fungistatic potential for all Candida species ***: Organic fractions obtained from leaves of Conocarpus erectus present antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and these findings contribute to scientific information for the effectiveness on use of this plant in the development of a phytotherapic compound.

Effects of environmental conditions and space on species turnover for three plant functional groups in Brazilian savannas

Aims Different plant functional groups display diverging responses to the same environmental ***,we assess the effects of environmental and spatial predictors on species turnover of three functional groups of Brazilian savannas(Cerrado)plants—trees,palms and lianas—across the transition zone between the Cerrado and Amazon biomes in central *** We used edaphic,climatic and plant composition data from nine one-hectare plots to assess the effects of the environment and space on species turnover using a Redundancy analysis and Generalized Dissimilarity Modeling(GDM),associated with variance *** Findings We recorded 167 tree species,5 palms and 4 liana *** variation was most important in explaining species turnover,relative to geographic distance,but the best predictors differed between functional groups:geographic distance and silt for lianas;silt for palms;geographic distance,temperature and elevation for *** distances alone exerted little influence over species turnover for the three functional *** pure environmental variation explained most of the liana and palm turnover,while tree turnover was largely explained by the shared spatial and environmental *** effects of geographic distance upon species turnover leveled off at about 300 km for trees,and 200 km for lianas,whereas they were unimportant for palm species *** results indicate that environmental factors that determine floristic composition and species turnover differ substantially between plant functional groups in ***,we recommend that studies that aim to investigate the role of environmental conditions in determining plant species turnover should examine plant functional groups separately.

Postural Balance in the Elderly with Mild Cognitive Impairment: Relationship to Accidental Falls

This study analyzed postural balance in the elderly with mild cognitive impairment and its relationship to accidental falls. A quantitative and quasi-experimental method was used in a sample of 43 elderlies between 64 and 88 years old, mostly females. data collection was performed in two Basic Health Units in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2014. The instruments used were the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Tinetti scale, Motor Scale for the Elderly (EMTI) scale, and Elderly Falls Diary. The data were analyzed with the SAS statistical software version 9.3.1. The scales were applied before and after the psychomotor interventions. A significant difference was observed between the evaluating moments. Balance improvements were observed in all age groups, suggesting that all elderlies, regardless of age, showed satisfactory responses to the implemented psychomotor activities. The elderlies who fell more frequently were those between 60 and 69 years old. It is noteworthy that the age group with the lowest incidence of falls was that of elderlies between 70 and 79 years old. It was concluded that psychomotor activities are beneficial, regardless of age, proving their effectiveness when continued stimuli with cognitive and psychomotor activities are carried out.

Clinical use of estimating glomerular filtration rate equ-ations during pregnancy

Background: Kidney disease, even when mild, was once considered so major an impediment to successful pregnancy and so dangerous to the mother’s wellbeing. High-risk pregnancy mainly associated to renal impairment may occur in 10-20% of gestations and it is very important that renal function is closely monitored to prevent or minimize maternal and fetal complications. This study was designed to investigate the performance of Cockcroft-Gault CGeq and the simplified MDRDeq equations in healthy pregnant women to assess renal function. Methods: We studied 167 normal ambulatory pregnant women and kidney function was contemporaneously estimated through the CGeq and the simplified MDRDeq and calculated through the creatinine clearance (Ccr). Serum and urinary creatinine were assayed using Jaffé reaction method in the same Autoanalyser. Results: When we compared calculated and estimated clearences for measurement of kidney function we observed that CGeq overestimated renal function (CGeq = 168.41 ± 38.80 ml/ min/1.73 m2, Ccr = 146.27 ± 30.49 ml/min / 1.73 m2, p < 0.001), MDRDeq underestimated renal function (Ccr = 146.27 ± 30.49 ml/min / 1.73 m2, MDRDeq = 129.15 ± 29.28 ml/min / 1.73m2, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that CGeq overestimated, MDRDeq underestimated significantly kidney function during gestation in healthy women and cannot be recommended to assess renal function in obstetric practice. Ccr remains a useful clinical tool in pregnant women until the development of a specific equation that considers the several important maternal renal physiological alterations and provides the measure of GFR the most unbiased and precise as possible.

Behavior and Viability of Blueberry Seeds through Germination and Tetrazolium Test

Knowing the physiology of seeds and the elements that influence their germination is fundamental aspects in seminiferous propagation;important techniques are used to obtain genetic variability and development of new cultivars of blueberry. The aim of this study is to evaluate the germination behavior, as well as viability levels, through germination tests and tetrazolium, of Vaccinium ashei Reade seed cultivars Briteblue and Climax. Seeds treated or not with 5 M potassium hydroxide (KOH) were submitted to the germination test, on substrates, filter paper (SP) or solid culture medium with half of the salt concentration (MS/2), at temperatures of 10°C ± 2°C or 25°C ± 2°C. The maximum germination percentage of blueberry seeds was 40%. Both temperatures and substrates caused seed germination in the tested cultivars, and pretreatment with 5 M KOH for 5 minutes inhibited germination. Yet, the tetrazolium test, based on coloration of tissue, allowed the establishment of different levels of viability.

Kriging Geostatistical Methods for Travel Mode Choice: A Spatial data analysis to Travel Demand Forecasting

This paper aims to compare the results of two techniques of Kriging (Ordinary Kriging and Indicator Kriging) that are applied to estimate the Private Motorized (PM) travel mode use (car or motorcycle) in several geographical coordinates of non-sampled values of the concerning variable. The data used was from the Origin/Destination and Public Transportation Opinion Survey, carried out in 2007/2008 at S?o carl.s (SP, Brazil). The techniques were applied in the region with 110 sample points (households). Initially, Decision Tree was applied to estimate the probability of mode choice in surveyed households, thus determining the numeric variable to be used in Ordinary Kriging. For application of Indicator Kriging it was used the variable “main travel mode” in a discrete manner, where “1” represented the use of PM travel mode and “0” characterized others travel modes. The results obtained by the two spatial estimation techniques were similar (Kriging maps and cross-validation procedure). However, the Indicator Kriging (KI) obtained the highest number of hit rates. In addition, with the KI it was possible to use the variable in its original form, avoiding error propagation. Finally, it was concluded that spatial statistics was thriving in travel demand forecasting issues, giving rise, for the both Kriging methods, to a travel mode choice surface on a confirmatory way.
