The growth and production modeling of individual trees of Eucalyptus urophylla plantations

Individual tree models(ITMs)are classified as growth and production models for projecting current and future forest stands.ITMs are more complex than other growth and production models,show a higher level of detail and,consequently,produce a better modeling resolution.However,the accuracy and efficiency of ITMs have not been properly assessed to date.In this study,we estimated the growth in height,diameter,and individual tree volume of a Eucalyptus urophylla plantation by applying an ITM.We used a continuing forest inventory dataset in which 1554 individual trees within 29 permanent plots were measured in the field over a 6-year period(24 to 72 months).Each individual tree volume was estimated for future tree age.To achieve this,we adjusted the model to predict the height and diameter growth,and the probability of mortality as a function of the competition index.The ITM accuracy was assessed based on the analysis of variance results and,subsequently,the multiple mean comparison test at the 5%significance level.The tree volumes predicted by the ITM for the forest stand aged 72 months,beginning at ages 24,36,48,and 60 months,were compared to the field measured tree volume acquired from the 72-month forest inventory that was used as the reference age.Estimated and observed tree volumes were similar when the estimation was based on the 48-month forest plots.These results might help to reduce financial costs of forest inventory because the ITM produces accurate future predictions of forest stand stocks.Our estimated ITM for Eucalyptus plantations using measurement intervals up to 2 years is recommended because it significantly reduced the projected volume discrepancy compared to the field measurements.

High-resolution multi-scale air pollution system:Evaluation of modelling performance and emission control strategies

A high percentage of the world's population lives in areas where air pollutant concentrations exceed the World Health Organization guidelines.This work aims to develop and test,a high-resolution multi-scale air pollution modelling system by integrating a set of adequate tools.This system is able to provide detailed air pollutant concentrations in urban areas and support air quality management strategies through a better identification of different atmospheric processes.It also allows furthering the design and assessment of air pollution control measures for a specific area.To evaluate its performance and suitability,the system was applied to the Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR),China,one of the most densely populated areas on earth,during a winter period when this area is affected by high levels of Particulate Matter(PM).Although the developed system tends to underestimate the PM concentrations,it revealed a good performance in reproducing the temporal and spatial air pollution patterns.Several exceedances of the Chinese air quality standards were calculated and high population exposure to PM pollution was estimated.The tested urban atmospheric emission reduction scenarios have shown air quality improvements,indicating that emission reduction measures at urban level should focus on the domestic sector.However,it is crucial to implement joint pollution prevention strategies with neighbouring regions to improve the air quality in Macao SAR.The approach developed in this work can support policymakers in defining new strategies to reduce atmospheric pollution in urban areas.

Prevalence and risk factors for acquired long QT syndrome in the emergency department:a retrospective observational study

BACKGROUND: Long QT syndrome(LQTS) is a heterogeneous syndrome that may be congenital or, more frequently, acquired. The real-world prevalence of acquired LQTS(aLQTS) in the emergency department(ED) remains to be determined. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence of aLQTS and its impact on symptoms on ED admissions.METHODS: Electrocardiograms(ECG) of 5,056 consecutively patients admitted in the ED of a tertiary hospital between January 28th and March 17th of 2020 were reviewed. All patients with aLQTS were included. Clinical data with a focus on QT prolonging drugs and clinical factors were recorded. Statistical comparison was made between the groups with and without corrected QT(QTc) interval greater than 500 ms(value that is considered severely increased).RESULTS: A total of 383 ECGs with prolonged QTc were recognized, corresponding to a prevalence of aLQTS at admission of 7.82%. Patients with aLQTS were more commonly men(53.3%) with an age of(73.49±14.79) years old and QTc interval of(505.3±32.4) ms. Only 20.4% of these patients with aLQTS were symptomatic. No ventricular arrhythmias were recorded. Patients with QT interval greater than 500 ms were more frequently female(59.5%;Pder(OR 2.473) and intake of antipsychotics(OR 1.925).CONCLUSION: aLQTS is particularly prevalent in the ED. Female patients on antibiotics and antipsychotics are at particularly high risk. Efforts must be made to avoid, detect and treat aLQTS as early as possible.

Flexible microelectronic devices have seen an increasing trend toward development of miniaturized,portable,and integrated devices as wearable electronics which have the requirement for being light weight,small in dimension,and suppleness.Traditional three-dimensional(3D)and two-dimensional(2D)electronics gadgets fail to effectively comply with these necessities owing to their stiffness and large weights.Investigations have come up with a new family of one-dimensional(1D)flexible and fiber-based electronic devices(FBEDs)comprising power storage,energy-scavenging,implantable sensing,and flexible displays gadgets.However,development and manufacturing are still a challenge owing to their small radius,flexibility,low weight,weave ability and integration in textile electronics.This paper will provide a detailed review on the importance of substrates in electronic devices,intrinsic property requirements,fabrication classification and applications in energy harvesting,energy storage and other flexible electronic devices.Fiber-and textile-based electronic devices for bulk/scalable fabrications,encapsulation,and testing are reviewed and presented future research ideas to enhance the commercialization of these fiber-based electronics devices.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the health authorities and governments worldwide to engage in a battle against the disease,adopting several mitigation strategies[1].Since then,the world population has been afected by various changes in its routines.Restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic are believed to have had an impact on adolescents'lifestyle(LS)[2].The LS is determined by discernible behavior patterns that can trigger efects on adolescents'health and is related to countless aspects that refect attitudes,values and life opportunities[3].Therefore,LS can be observed from the habits,behaviors and activities performed by people in their daily lives[4].

Downregulation of TNFR2 decreases survival gene expression,promotes apoptosis and affects the cell cycle of gastric cancer cells

BACKGROUND Chronic inflammation due to Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)infection promotes gastric carcinogenesis.Tumour necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),a key mediator of inflammation,induces cell survival or apoptosis by binding to two receptors(TNFR1 and TNFR2).TNFR1 can induce both survival and apoptosis,while TNFR2 results only in cell survival.The dysregulation of these processes may contribute to carcinogenesis.AIM To evaluate the effects of TNFR1 and TNFR2 downregulation in AGS cells treated with H.pylori extract on the TNF-αpathway.METHODS AGS cell lines containing TNFR1 and TNFR2 receptors downregulated by specific shRNAs and nonsilenced AGS cells were treated with H.pylori extract for 6 h.Subsequently,quantitative polymerase chain reaction with TaqMan®assays was used for the relative quantification of the mRNAs(TNFA,TNFR1,TNFR2,TRADD,TRAF2,CFLIP,NFKB1,NFKB2,CASP8,CASP3)and miRNAs(miR-19a,miR-34a,miR-103a,miR-130a,miR-181c)related to the TNF-αsignalling pathway.Flow cytometry was employed for cell cycle analysis and apoptosis assays.RESULTS In nonsilenced AGS cells,H.pylori extract treatment increased the expression of genes involved in cell survival and inhibited both apoptosis(NFKB1,NFKB2 and CFLIP)and the TNFR1 receptor.TNFR1 downregulation significantly decreased the expression of the TRADD and CFLIP genes,although no change was observed in the cellular process or miRNA expression.In contrast,TNFR2 downregulation decreased the expression of the TRADD and TRAF2 genes,which are both important downstream mediators of the TNFR1-mediated pathway,as well as that of the NFKB1 and CFLIP genes,while upregulating the expression of miR-19a and miR-34a.Consequently,a reduction in the number of cells in the G0/G1 phase and an increase in the number of cells in the S phase were observed,as well as the promotion of early apoptosis.CONCLUSION Our findings mainly highlight the important role of TNFR2 in the TNF-αpathway in gastric cancer,indicating that silencing it can reduce the expression of survival and anti-apoptotic genes

Background:Different homeopathic approaches have been used as supportive care for coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)cases,but none has been tested in a clinical trial.Objectives:To investigate the effectiveness and safety of the homeopathic medicine,Natrum muriaticum LM2,for mild cases of COVID-19.design,setting,participants,and interventions:A randomized,double-blind,two-armed,parallel,singlecenter,placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted from June 2020 to April 2021 in S?o-Carlos,Brazil.Participants aged>18 years,with influenza-like symptoms and positive result from a real-time polymerase chain reaction test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were recruited and randomized(1:1)into two groups that received different treatments during a period of at-homeisolation.One group received the homeopathic medicine Natrum muriaticum,prepared with the second degree of the fifty-millesimal dynamization(LM2;Natrum muriaticum LM2),while the other group received a placebo.Outcome measures:The primary endpoint was time until recovery from COVID-19 influenza-like symptoms.Secondary measures included a survival analysis of the number and severity of COVID-19 symptoms(influenza-like symptoms plus anosmia and ageusia)from a symptom grading scale that was informed by the participant,hospital admissions,and adverse events.Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate time-to-event(survival)measures.Results:Data from 86 participants were analyzed(homeopathy,n=42;placebo,n=44).There was no difference in time to recovery between two groups among participants who were reporting influenzalike symptoms at the beginning of monitoring(homeopathy,n=41;placebo,n=41;P=0.56),nor in a sub-group that had at least 5 moderate to severe influenza-like symptoms at the beginning of monitoring(homeopathy,n=15;placebo,n=17;P=0.06).Secondary outcomes indicated that a 50%reduction in symptom score was achieved significantly earlier in the homeopathy group(homeopathy,n=24;placebo,n=25;P=0.04),among the participants with a basal symptom s

The transient receptor potential melastatin 2:a new therapeutical target for Parkinson's disease?

The transient receptor potential melastatin 2 is a calcium-permeable cation channel member of the TRP family. Also known as an oxidative stress-activated channel, the transient receptor potential melastatin 2 gating mechanism is dependent on reactive oxygen species. In pathological conditions, transient receptor potential melastatin 2 is overactivated, leading to a Ca~(2+) influx that alters cell homeostasis and promotes cell death. The role of transient receptor potential melastatin 2 in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and ischemia, has already been described and reviewed. However, data on transient receptor potential melastatin 2 involvement in Parkinson's disease pathology has emerged only in recent years and the issue lacks review studies that focus specifically on this topic. The present review aims to elucidate the role of the transient receptor potential melastatin 2 channel in Parkinson's disease by reviewing, summarizing, and discussing the in vitro, in vivo, and human studies published until August 2022. Here we describe fourteen studies that evaluated the transient receptor potential melastatin 2 channel in Parkinson's disease. The Parkinson's disease model used, transient receptor potential melastatin 2 antagonist and genetic approaches, and the main outcomes reported were discussed. The studies described transient receptor potential melastatin 2 activation and enhanced expression in different Parkinson's disease models. They also evidenced protective and restorative effects when using transient receptor potential melastatin 2 antagonists, knockout, or silencing. This review provides a literature overview and suggests where there is a need for more research. As a perspective point, this review shows evidence that supports transient receptor potential melastatin 2 as a pharmacological target for Parkinson's disease in the future.

Therapeutic Properties of Flavonoids in Treatment of Cancer through Autophagic Modulation:A Systematic Review

Cancers have high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide.Current anticancer therapies have demonstrated specific signaling pathways as a target in the involvement of carcinogenesis.Autophagy is a quality control system for proteins and plays a fundamental role in cancer carcinogenesis,exerting an anticarcinogenic role in normal cells and can inhibit the transformation of malignant cells.Therefore,drugs aimed at autophagy can function as antitumor agents.Flavonoids are a class of polyphenolic secondary metabolites commonly found in plants and,consequently,consumed in diets.In this review,the systematic search strategy was used,which included the search for descriptors"flavonoids"AND"mTOR pathway"AND"cancer"AND"autophagy",in the electronic databases of PubMed,Cochrane Library,Web of Science and Scopus,from January 2011 to January 2021.The current literature demonstrates that flavonoids have anticarcinogenic properties,including inhibition of cell proliferation,induction of apoptosis,autophagy,necrosis,cell cycle arrest,senescence,impaired cell migration,invasion,tumor angiogenesis and reduced resistance to multiple drugs in tumor cells.We demonstrate the available evidence on the roles of flavonoids and autophagy in cancer progression and inhibition.(Registration No.CRD42021243071 at PROSPERO)

COVID-19,mental health and Indigenous populations in Brazil:The epidemic beyond the pandemic

The aim of this paper was to report on factors contributing to the deterioration of the mental health of Indigenous populations(IP)in Brazil.Five factors seem to have a direct impact on the mental health of IP in Brazil:(1)The absence of public policies;(2)Intellectual production;(3)Psychiatric medical care for remote areas(e.g.,telemedicine)aimed at promoting the mental health of Brazil’s IP,which causes a huge gap in the process of assistance and social,psychological,economic and cultural valorization of native peoples;(4)The dissemination of fake news,which exposed,above all,older IP to risk behaviors in the pandemic,such as refusal of vaccination;and(5)The violence carried out on IP lands due to economic interests with mining/agribusiness.
