This paper addresses the present-day context of Systems Engineering, revisiting and setting up an updated framework for the SIMILAR process in order to use it to engineer the contemporary systems. The contemporary world is crowded of large interdisciplinary complex systems made of other systems, personnel, hardware, software, information, processes, and facilities. An integrated holistic approach is crucial to develop these systems and take proper account of their multifaceted nature and numerous interrelationships. As the system＇s complexity and extent grow, the number of parties involved （stakeholders and shareholders） usually also raises, bringing to the interaction a considerable amount of points of view, skills, responsibilities, and interests. The Systems Engineering approach aims to tackle the complex and interdisciplinary whole of those socio-technical systems, providing the means to enable their successful realization. Its exploitation in our modern world is assuming an increasing relevance noticeable by emergent standards, academic papers, international conferences, and post-graduate programmes in the field. This work aims to provide ＂the picture＂ of modern Systems Engineering, and to update the context of the SIMILAR process model in order to use this renewed framework to engineer the challenging contemporary systems. The emerging trends in the field are also pointed-out with particular reference to the Model-Based Systems Engineering approach.

The ballastless track is nowadays the most popular railway system due to the required low number of maintenance opera-tions and costs,despite the high *** gradual change from ballasted to ballastless tracks has been occurring in Asia,but also in Europe,increasing the number of transition *** transition zones are a special area of the railway networks where there is an accelerated process of track degradation,which is a major concern of the railway infrastructure ***,the accurate prediction of the short-and long-term performance of ballastless tracks in transition zones is an important topic in the current paradigm of building/rehabilitating high-speed *** work purposes the development of an advanced 3D model to study the global performance of a ballastless track in an embankment-tunnel transition zone considering the influence of the train speed(220,360,500,and 600 km/h).Moreover,a mitigation measure is also adopted to reduce the stress and displacements levels of the track in the transition.A resilient mat placed in the tunnel and embank-ment aims to soften the *** behaviour of the track with the resilient mat is evaluated considering the influence of the train speed,with special attention regarding the critical *** used methodology is a novel and hybrid approach that allows including short-term and long-term performance,through the development of a powerful 3D model combined with the implementation of a calibrated empirical permanent deformation model.

Insular marine biotas are often richer in faunal diversity than those from the open sea in the same geo- graphical region. The existence of particular island effects were tested under polar conditions by compar- ing infaunal benthic assemblages on Peter I Island with those of similar latitudes in the open ocean at the Bellingshausen Sea and also from the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Sampling was carried out aboard the R/V Hesperides during the expedition named BENTART-2003 from 24 January to 3 March 2003. Benthic samples were collected at 18 stations ranging from 90 to 2 044 m depth, using an USNEL-type box corer （BC） dredge. Representatives of 32 higher taxa of invertebrates were found. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed various patterns in the data. First, significant differences in polychaete abundance were detected between the stations located in the open sea and the remaining sites （island plus mainland sites）. Bivalve abundances were also distinct between island and mainland sampling sites. Sediment columns taken from the island seafloor exhibited the highest rate of bioturbation by the infauna. These findings confirm the model that islands develop distinct assemblages characterized by the enhancement of the benthic commu- nities even in cold waters. Several abiotic factors were measured simultaneously at the seafloor and along the water column to investigate faunal distribution patterns. Significant correlations were found between the benthic assemblages and a combination of two environmental variables：＂island effect＂（measured as a categorical variable） and the redox state of sediments. Richer and more complex benthic assemblages were found in Peter I Island＇s sea bottom, whereas the more depauperate bottoms remained in the open sea.

Small and Medium Enterprises（SMEs）play a fundamental role in enhancing a country economic development and job *** need to maintain a good financial performance in order to survive and grow in today’s changing business *** the fact that SMEs are managed by on individual（manager/owner）,this study examines the impact of financial literacy and networking competency possessed by SMEs managers on their firms’ financial performance with emphasis on the potential moderating role of market orientation in Chinese and Peruvian *** an initial stage,exploratory interviews were conducted with some SMEs’ managers about their perception and importance of financial literacy,networking competency,and market orientation in enhancing financial *** questionnaires were used to collect data from owners/managers of SMEs and data analyzed using structural equation *** finding showed a significant positive impact financial literacy and networking competency on SMEs financial performance in China and *** Chinese context,market orientation was found to strengthen the impact of financial literacy and networking competency on SMEs financial performance,whereas in Peruvian context,market orientation was found to strengthen the relationship between networking competency and financial performance of SMEs *** by the research findings,a set of recommendations to policy makers and managers of SMEs are withdrawn as well as identifying future areas of research.

The production and secretion of antibodies by human plasma cells(PCs)are two essential processes of humoral *** secretion process relies on a group of proteins known as soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptors(SNAREs),which are located in the plasma membrane(t-SNAREs)and in the antibody-carrying vesicle membrane(v-SNARE),and mediate the fusion of both *** have previously shown that SNAP23 and STX4 are the t-SNAREs responsible for antibody ***,using human PCs and antibody-secreting cell lines,we studied and characterized the expression and subcellular distribution of vesicle associated membrane protein(VAMP)isoforms,demonstrating that all isoforms(with the exception of VAMP1)are expressed by the referenced ***,the functional role in antibody secretion of each expressed VAMP isoform was tested using *** results show that VAMP2 may be the v-SNARE involved in vesicular antibody *** further support this conclusion,we used tetanus toxin light chain to cleave VAMP2,conducted experiments to verify co-localization of VAMP2 in antibody-carrying vesicles,and demonstrated the coimmunoprecipitation of VAMP2 with STX4 and SNAP23 and the in situ interaction of VAMP2 with *** together,these findings implicate VAMP2 as the main VAMP isoform functionally involved in antibody secretion.

The New Rigid Element for Laminated Cylindrical Shell

Thermal effects are incorporated into developed discrete layer mechanics for two-dimensional cylindrical shells structures. Finite element equations are developed according to layerwise theory of laminated structure. Following the layerwise theory, a variable kinematic model that incorporates mechanics and thermal conditions is also presented. The new element has a field of displacement compatible with the cylindrical shell element or plate and it can be used as a rigid element for this structural *** the laminate model construction, adjacent layers are arranged as bonded layers. The layer has a unique constant thickness that can be different to each layer. The fiber reinforced is used and the fibers in a laminate may be oriented arbitrarily. The shear stress is adopted equal to zero because the thin thickness, on the other hand, the normal stress is maintained in order to ensure the compatibility of stress in material. The previously authors of this methods neglect the implications of thermal effects on cylindrical shells structures. Thermal effects become important when the structure has to operate in either extremely hot or cold temperature environments. These extreme conditions may severely affect the response of structure in two distinct ways：（1） induction of thermal stresses due to differences in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the various composite plies and layers and （2） temperature dependence of the elastic properties. Only a limited amount of work has been reported concerning this topic. All in all, the main contribution of this work is the consideration of this kinematic for cylindrical shells that incorporate mechanics and thermal conditions. In addition, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the current formulation to represent the behavior of cylindrical shells with these characteristics.
