Assessment of Risk of Carrier Waves in the Assisted Reproductive laboratory

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratories represent the marriage of the most basic of biological activities with the most cutting edge technologies. While this association has worked well, the mixture of biology and technology can create risks to normal embryo development. Recently a significant amount of literature has explored the risks of manmade, electrically induced magnetic fields and carrier waves on reproduction, which some studies have suggested will lower functional gamete numbers in the males and potentially induce genetic issues in embryos. However, little is known about these phenomena within the ART laboratory, a laboratory filled with electronic equipment. The object of the present study was to explore the potential exposure of gametes and early stage embryos to two of the most prevalent fields and waves utilized in manmade technologies seen in the general environment, electromagnetic fields (EMF) and radio frequency waves (RF), and determine the effect varying levels of these energetic forces had on gamete function and embryo development. Results indicated that while extremely high concentrations of EMF (approximately 50-100X of laboratory background) caused negative outcomes in both gametes and embryos, levels consistent will the majority of lab equipment did not appear to impact growth, or function. Further, even extremely high RF appeared to have no impact cellular function. Results suggest few issues with EMF or RF on gamete and embryo function at normal laboratory levels for the relatively short exposure times seen in the ART laboratory.

Study of the Impact of Grid Disconnections on the Production of a Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant: Case of Diamniadio Power Plant

Today, renewable energy projects connected to the interconnected network, with powers of the order of tens of megawatts, are more and more numerous in sub-Saharan Africa. And financing these investments requires a reliable amortization schedule. In the context of photovoltaic systems connected to the interconnected electricity grid, the quintessence of damping is the amount of energy injected into the grid. Thus it is fundamental to know the parameters of this network and their variation. This paper presents an evaluation of the impact of power grid disturbances on the performance of a solar PV plant under real conditions. The CICAD photovoltaic solar plant, connected to the Senelec distribution network, with an installed capacity of 2 MWp is the study setting. An energy audit of the plant is carried out. Then the percentage of each loss is determined: voltage drops, module degradation, inverter efficiency. The duration of each disconnection is measured and recorded daily. The corresponding quantity of lost energy is thus calculated from meteorological data (irradiation, temperature, wind speed, illumination) recorded by the measurement unit in one-minute steps. The observation period is three months. The total duration of disconnections related to the instability of the electrical network during the study period is 46.7 hours. The amount of energy lost is estimated at 22.6 MWh. This represents 2.4% of the actual calculated production.

Diagnostic Utility of Performing Flow Cytometry on Provider-Submitted Endoscopically Collected Gastrointestinal Samples

Multicolor flow cytometry (MFC) is essential to the diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHl). In our institution, MFC specimens are submitted by pathologists or an ordering provider. As endoscopy has revolutionized the ability to biopsy the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, our lab increasingly receives provider-submitted, endoscopically-acquired GI biopsies (PEGIB) for MFC analysis. This study evaluates the clinical utility of MFC performed on PEGIB and proposes a new testing algorithm to enhance the pathology team’s role in MFC test utilization. Fifty-five archival PEGIB MFC cases were identified and histories were reviewed. MFC was non-contributory to the overall diagnosis in 85% of PEGIB. Retroactively implementing an algorithm that used PEGIB permanent section screening to triage the 55 archival cases resulted in the appropriate identification of 100% of specimens whose diagnosis would have benefitted from MFC analysis, and the optimization of test utilization by decreasing unnecessary MFC studies.

Monitoring Heavy Metals near Wastewater Facility in Delaware Inland Bays Tidal Canal

NOAA National Status and Trends Mussel Watch Report indicate the Delaware Bay has regionally medium levels of Cd and high levels of Pb. Environment New Jersey, a non-profit environmental group, reported the Delaware River, providing drinking water to millions, as the fifth most-polluted river in the country. These concerns resulted in this study monitoring water quality conditions near a wastewater facility in Delaware. Physical water quality parameters were measured, along with heavy metals Cd and Pb. Mean metal levels were consistently low at the wastewater discharge (1.3 μg/l Cd, 5.1 μg/l Pb), and high at the control location (9.2 μg/l Cd and 11.5 μg/l of Pb). Relationships were observed between heavy metals, salinity and pH levels. Results suggest water treated by the facility does not pose heavy metal contamination risks to the lewes Rehoboth Canal. Further studies are warranted to seek heavy metal sources at the control point, farthest from the waste water treatment facility.

Genomic prediction of Fusarium head blight resistance in early stages using advanced breeding lines in hard winter wheat

Fusarium head blight(FHB),also known as scab,is a devastating fungal disease of wheat that causes significant losses in grain yield and *** inheritance and cumbersome phenotyping make FHB resistance a challenging trait for direct selection in wheat *** selection to predict FHB resistance traits has shown promise in several ***,we used univariate and multivariate genomic prediction models to evaluate the prediction accuracy(PA)for different FHB traits using 476elite and advanced breeding lines developed by South Dakota State University hard winter wheat breeding *** breeding lines were assessed for FHB disease index(DIS),and percentage of Fusarium damaged kernels(FDK)in three FHB nurseries in 2018,2019,and 2020(TP18,TP19,and TP20)and were evaluated as training populations(TP)for genomic prediction(GP)of FHB *** observed a moderate PA using univariate models for DIS(0.39 and 0.35)and FDK(0.35 and 0.37)using TP19 and TP20,respectively,while slightly higher PA was observed(0.41 for DIS and 0.38 for FDK)when TP19 and TP20(TP19+20)were combined to leverage the advantage of a large training *** GP with multivariate approach including plant height and days to heading as covariates did not significantly improve PA for DIS and FDK over univariate models,PA for DON increased by 20%using DIS,FDK,DTH as covariates using multi-trait model in ***,we used TP19,TP20,and TP19+20 in forward prediction to calculate genomic-estimated breeding values(GEBVs)for DIS and FDK in preliminary breeding lines at an early stage of the breeding *** observed moderate PA of up to 0.59 for DIS and 0.54for FDK,demonstrating the promise in genomic prediction for FHB resistance in earlier stages using advanced *** results suggest GP for expensive FHB traits like DON and FDK can facilitate the rejection of highly susceptible materials at an early stage in a breeding program.

Objective To examine the resilience of parents of children with congenital heart disease and to investigate socio-demographic factors that may influence parents’*** This is a web-based survey study using a cross-sectional design.A purposive sampling method was utilized to recruit 515 parents who care for children with congenital heart *** was assessed using the Dispositional Resilience Scale-Ⅱ.Based on expert-interviews,a questionnaire was designed to collect socio-demographic *** statistics,factor analysis,and linear regressions were used to analyze *** A total of 413 parents completed the survey *** mean resilience score was 3.75(SD=0.61;range=1.89–4.89)with higher scores indicating higher *** linear regression models demonstrated that parents who had lower education levels and lower gross household income had lower resilience(Plusions Parents reported resilience that reflected their ability to cope with stressful events and mitigate stressors associated with having and caring for children with congenital heart *** education levels and lower gross household income are associated with lower *** increase parents’resilience,nursing practice and nurse-led interventions should target screening and providing support for parents at-risk for lower *** lower education level and financial hardship are factors that are difficult to modify through personal efforts,charitable foundations,federal and state governments should consider programs that would provide financial and health literacy support for parents at-risk for lower resilience.

Given the likelihood of future reductions in the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation(AMOC),it is important to document how changes in the AMOC have altered climate patterns in the past and to assess the skill of coupled climate models in reproducing these *** past abrupt changes in the AMOC,the 8.2 ka event provides a particularly useful case study because its duration,magnitude of AMOC reduction and background climate state are closest to conditions expected in the *** this research,we present an expanded proxy synthesis of the 8.2 ka event in monsoonal Asia,including new high-resolution lake and bog records,more sites from the East Asia monsoon region and proxies of winter monsoon *** compare proxy evidence with a new simulation of the 8.2 ka event using the Community Climate System Model version 3(CCSM3) and prescribing North Atlantic freshwater forcing according to the latest *** find clear and objectively-determined evidence for 8.2 ka climate anomalies at nearly all of the fourteen proxy sites,emphasizing the strong and widespread impacts of the event in monsoonal Asia during both summer and winter *** model simulation corroborates that these anomalies,described generally as a weakening of the summer monsoon and strengthening of the winter monsoon,were likely caused by a reduction of the *** of regional anomalies in East Asia reveals some spatial heterogeneity,however,that in the model simulation is caused by contraction of the seasonal migration of the subtropical monsoon *** duration of climate anomalies at 8.2 ka in monsoonal Asia,both in proxy records and the model simulation,generally matches the duration of the event in Greenland ice core δ^(18)O,further supporting a tight connection to the North Atlantic.
