The nest environment may limit the ability of nest-bound birds to hear sounds from the outside *** vocal learning species,such as humans and songbirds,it is vital for young animals to hear the voices of conspecific animals early in *** songbirds,nest structure varies considerably across species,and the resulting impact on sound transmission may have consequences for vocal learning in *** this study,we tested the hypothesis that the nest environment attenuates song of Savannah Sparrows(Passerculus sandwichensis),grassland songbirds that build nests on the ground under cover of dense *** recorded live Savannah Sparrows singing at variable distances from 21 *** recorded songs using one microphone inside the nest(the typical position of a nestling)and another placed 1 m directly above the nest(a typical position of an adult).We found a substantial reduction in signal-to-noise ratio,where songs recorded inside the nest were an average of 11 dB lower than songs recorded directly above the *** estimate that the attenuation imposed by the nest reduced the maximum acoustic environment from 117.7 m(for recordings above the nest),to 78.6 m(for recordings within the nest),which is analogous to listening from a position 39.1 m farther away from the *** research estimated that song transmits up to 100 m in this species,so any adult male within 100 m of a young bird was previously considered a potential vocal *** reducing the nestling acoustic environment from 100 m to 78.6 m,the number of male tutors available to nestlings is reduced by an average of 27%.Given the growing evidence that song learning begins very early in life,future research on vocal development should account for how the structural properties of the natal environment affect the songs that nestlings hear.

Having a formal model of neural networks can greatly help in understanding and verifying their properties,behavior,and response to external factors such as disease and *** this paper,we adopt a formal model to represent neurons,some neuronal graphs,and their *** specific neuronal graphs are known for having biologically relevant structures and behaviors and we call them *** archetypes are supposed to be the basis of typical instances of neuronal information *** this paper we study six fundamental archetypes(simple series,series with multiple outputs,parallel composition,negative loop,inhibition of a behavior,and contralateral inhibition),and we consider two ways to couple two archetypes:(i)connecting the output(s)of the first archetype to the input(s)of the second archetype and(ii)nesting the first archetype within the second *** report and compare two key approaches to the formal modeling and verification of the proposed neuronal archetypes and some selected *** first approach exploits the synchronous programming language lustre to encode archetypes and their couplings,and to express properties concerning their dynamic *** properties are verified thanks to the use of model *** second approach relies on a theorem prover,the Coq Proof Assistant,to prove dynamic properties of neurons and archetypes.

Water disinfection is an essential process that provides safe water by inactivating pathogens that cause waterborne diseases. However, disinfectants react with organic matter naturally present in water, leading to the formation of disinfection by-products(DBPs). Multi-analyte methods based on mass spectrometry(MS) are preferred to quantify multiple DBP classes at once however, most require extensive sample pre-treatment and significant resources. In this study, two analytical methods were developed for the quantification of 32 regulated and unregulated DBPs. A purge and trap(P&T) coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GC-MS) method was optimized that automated sample pre-treatment and analyzed volatile and semi-volatile compounds, including trihalomethanes(THMs), iodinated trihalomethanes(I-THMs), haloacetonitriles(HANs), haloketones(HKTs) and halonitromethanes(HNMs). lOQs were between 0.02-0.4 μg/l for most DBPs except for 8 analytes that were in the low μg/l range. A second method with liquid chromatography(lC) tandem mass spectrometry(MS/MS) was developed for the quantification of 10 haloacetic acids(HAAs) with a simple clean-up and direct injection. The lC-MS/MS direct injection method has the lowest detection limits reported(0.2-0.5 μg/l). Both methods have a simple sample pre-treatment, which make it possible for routine analysis. Hyperchlorination and uniform formation conditions(UFC) formation potential tests with chlorine were evaluated with water samples containing high and low TOC. Hyperchlorination formation potential test maximized THMs and HAAs while UFC maximized HANs. Ascorbic acid was found to be an appropriate quencher for both analytical methods. Disinfected drinking water from four water utilities in Alberta, Canada were also evaluated.
