The house fly,Musca domestica,is a cosmopolitan species known for its pestif-erous nature and potential to mechanically vector numerous human and animal *** of adult house flies often relies on insecticides formulated into food ***-ever,due to the overuse of these baits,insecticide resistance has developed to all insecti-cide classes currently registered for use in the United *** populations of house flies have developed resistance to imidacloprid,the most widely used neonicotinoid in-secticide for fly control,through both physiological and behavioral resistance *** the current study,we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the inheritance and dominance of behavioral resistance to imidacloprid in a lab-selected behaviorally re-sistant house fly ***,we conducted feeding preference assays to assess the feeding responses of genetic cross progeny to *** results confirmed that behavioral resistance to imidacloprid is inherited as a polygenic trait,though it is inherited differently between male and female *** also demonstrated that feeding preference assays can be instrumental in future genetic inheritance studies as they provide direct insight into the behavior of different strains under controlled conditions that reveal,interactions between the organism and the *** findings of this study carry significant implications for pest management and underscore the need for integrated pest control approaches that consider genetic and ecological factors contributing to resistance.

Proteomic response of wheat embryos to fosthiazate stress in a protected vegetable soil

A proteomic analysis of wheat defense response induced by the widely used organophosphorus nematicide fosthiazate is reported. Seed germination and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis （2-DE） experiments were performed using a Chinese wheat cultivar, Zhenmai No. 5. Root and shoot elongation decreased but thiobarbituric acid reactive substances （TbARS） content in embryos increased with increasing pesticide concentration. More than 1000 protein spots were reprodueibly detected in each silver-stained gel. Thirty-seven protein spots with at least 2-fold changes were identified using MALDI-TOF MS/MS analysis. Of these, 24 spots were up-regulated and 13 were down-regulated. Proteins identified included some well-known classical stress responsive proteins under abiotic or biotic stresses as well as some unusual responsive proteins. Ten responsive proteins were reported for the first time at the proteomic level, including fatty acyl CoA reductase, dihydrodipicolinate synthase, DEAD-box ATPase-RNA-helicase, fimbriata-like protein, waxy b 1, rust resistance kinase Lrl0, putative In2.1 protein, retinoblastoma-related protein 1, pollen allergen-like protein and S-adenosyl-L- methionine：phosphoethanolamine N-methyltransferase. The proteins identified were involved in several processes such as metabolism, defense/detoxification, cell structure/ceU growth, signal transduction]transcription, photosynthesis and energy. Seven candidate proteins were further analyzed at the mRNA level by RT-PCR to compare transcript and protein accumulation patterns, revealing that not all the genes were correlated well with the protein level. Identification of these responsive proteins may provide new insight into the molecular basis of the fosthiazate-stress response in the early developmental stages of plants and may be useful in stress monitoring or stress-tolerant crop breeding for environmentally friendly agricultural production.

In the United States,coal consumption in the last 12 years has declined from 1,045,140 million short tons in 2007 to 539,420 million short tons in 2019,a decrease of almost 50%.During that period the number of electric power coal generators has declined from 1,470 to 738 accounting for 21%of *** even more dramatic decrease in coal use has occurred in Western *** significant reduction in coal use and the concomitant closure of coal mines and coal-burning power plants will result in substantially cleaner air,reductions in respiratory problems such as asthma,less heart disease,fewer hospitalizations,and other health benefits,as well as a reduction in occupational health problems such as silicosis and Coal Workers’Pneumoconiosis(black Lung Disease).However,in China,India,Russia and in several other Asian countries some projections indicate an increase in coal production and *** some situations,the coal is burned in old,highly polluting power *** these regions the health impacts of coal use could *** addition,millions of people in these regions still burn coal in their homes resulting in maximal exposure to the pollutants such as arsenic,selenium,fluorine,and mercury released from coal combustion.

Phytotoxicity in seven higher plant species exposed to di-n-butyl phthalate or bis （2-ethylhexyl） phthalate

We investigated phytotoxicity in seven plant species exposed to a range of concentrations （0- 500 mg· kg^-1 soil） of di-n-butyl phthalate （DnbP） or his （2- ethylhexyl） phthalate （DEHP）, two representative phthalate esters （PAEs） nominated by USEPA as priority pollutants and known environmental estrogens. We studied seed germination, root elongation, seedling growth, biomass （fresh weight, FW） and malondialdehyde （MDA） content of shoots and roots of wheat （Triticum aestivum L.）, alfalfa （Medicago sativa L.）, perennial ryegrass （Lolium perenne）, radish （Raphanus sativus L.）, cucumber （Cucumis sativus L.）, oat （Avena sativa） and onion （Allium cepa L.）, together with monitoring of plant pigment content （chlorophyll a, b and earotinoids） in alfalfa, radish and onion shoots. Root elongation, seedling growth and biomass of the test species were generally inhibited by DnbP but not by DEHP, indicating a lower level of phytotoxicity of DEHP than of DnbP. MDA contents of four species were promoted by PAE exposure, but not in alfalfa, ryegrass or onion shoots, indicating lower sensitivity of these three species to PAE pollutants. Plant pigment contents were clearly affected under the stress of both pollutants, implying the potential damage to the photosynthetic system of test plants, mainly by decreasing the content of chlorophyll a and b. Results of DnbP and DEHP phytotoxicity to the primary growth of test plants has provided information for the assessment of their environmental risk in the soil and also forms a basis for the further analysis of their toxic effects over the whole growth period of different plant species.

Emergency department patients with small bowel obstruction： What is the anticipated clinical course？

bACKGROUND:Emergency physicians(EPs)often care for patients with acute small bowel *** some patients require exploratory laparotomy,others are managed successfully with supportive *** aimed to determine features that predict the need for operative management in emergency department(ED)patients with small bowel obstruction(SbO).METHODS:We performed a retrospective chart review of 370 consecutive patients admitted to a large urban academic teaching hospital with a diagnosis of SbO over a two-year *** evaluated demographic characters(prior SbO,prior abdominal surgery,active malignancy)and clinical findings(leukocytosis and lactic acid)to determine features associated with the need for urgent operative ***:Patients with a prior SbO were less likely to undergo operative intervention[20.3%(42/207)]compared to those without a prior SbO[35.2%(57/162)].Abnormal bloodwork was not associated with need for operative intervention.68%of patients with CT scan findings of both an SbO and a hernia,however,were operatively ***:Patients with a history of SbO were less likely to require operative intervention at any point during their *** bloodwork was not associated with operative *** CT finding of a hernia,however,predicted the need for operative intervention,while other findings(ascites,duodenal thickening)did *** research would be helpful to construct a prediction rule,which could help community EPs determine which patients may benefit from expedited transfer for operative management,and which patients could be safely managed conservatively as an initial treatment strategy.
