Sporopollenin exines microcapsules, derived f.om the naturally occurring spores of.Lycopodium clavatum, have been loaded in-situ with humic acid sodium salt-Zinc (HA-Zn) complex. The chemical treatment method utilised to prepare the sporopollenin microcapsules f.om raw spores was discussed and the resulted sporopollenin microcapsules were characterised using SEM, TGA and f.IR. Metal complexes of.the sodium salt of.humic acid and zinc ion were prepared using dif.erent protocols and in-situ loaded into the pre-treated sporopollenin microcapsules. The resulted complex was characterised bef.re and af.er the encapsulation process using f.IR, TGA and XRD techniques. The morphology of.the empty and loaded sporopollenin was not altered. Inf.ared spectroscopy revealed an increase in the absorption f.r COO– vibrations at 1583 and 1384 cm–1 in the f.IR spectra of.HA-Zn complex compared to that of.the original sodium salt of.humic acid, indicative of.bonding of.the metal ions in hydrated f.rm to the carboxyl or phenolic hydroxyl groups or both of.the sodium humate molecules. TGA results of.the HA-Zn complex loaded sporopollenin showed that around %15 of.residual HA-Zn was successf.lly encapsulated indicative of.the ef.iciency of.the protocol used. We showed also that biodegradable magnetite nanoparticles can be surf.ce modif.ed with HA and encapsulated into sporopollenin. The resulted biosorbents microcapsules can be used f.r enhanced magnetic removal of.either heavy metals or HA f.om dif.erent aqueous media.

Back.round: The risk.of.carotid vessel stenosis is high af.er radiotherapy (RT) to neck.however, carotid vessels are unavoidable during supraclavicular (SC-RT) in adjuvant treatment of.breast cancer (BC). However, carotid vessels RT dose is less well-understood. We aimed to determine the carotid vessels doses received by dif.erent techniques f.r SC-RT. Materials and Methods: Thirty consecutive BC patients were planned to receive SC-RT and breast af.er breast conserving surgery (BCS) af.er tak.ng 5 mm image slices on computed tomography (CT) simulation. Organs at risk.(OAR) including carotid vessels, lungs, spinal cord alongwith clinical target volume (CTV) f.r primary tumor and lymph nodes were delineated. Comparative analysis was done between two treatment plans;three-f.eld conf.rmal radiation therapy (3f.CRT) and f.ur f.eld conf.rmal RT (4f.CRT) f.r CTV and carotid vessels doses. Results: The 4f.CRT was f.und better than 3f.3DCRT regarding coverage and homogeneity of.the CTV volume. The 98% of.the CTV was covered by 84% dose in 3f.CRT and 95% in 4f.CRT (p 0.001). The carotid vessels maximum dose in the in 3f.CRT was 54.5 ± 1.3 Gy compared to 51.6 ± 1.3 Gy in 4f.CRT (p 0.014), however the mean dose did not dif.er signif.cantly (p value 0.8). The ipsilateral lung dose did not dif.er between the two techniques (p Value 0.9). Conclusion: The 4f.CRT plan was f.und better than 3f.CRT in CTV coverage with minimal dose to the carotid vessel and without signif.cant higher dose to the ipsilateral lung.

Purpose: To determine the role of.dif.usion weighted MR imaging and apparent dif.usion coef.icient (ADC) in benign hepatic f.cal lesions. Method and Materials: This study included 47 patients (29 M, 18 f.with mean age of.43 years) with benign hepatic f.cal lesions. They were cyst (n = 8), hemangioma (n = 23), abscess (n = 5), adenoma (n = 5), f.cal nodular hyperplasia (n = 4) and nodular regenerative hyperplasia (n = 2). They underwent routine MR imaging and dif.usion MR weighted imaging using 1.5 tesla MR unit (Symphony-Siemens). Dif.usion MR imaging was done using spin echo type of.single shot echo planar imaging (EPI) with b value of.0, 500 & 1000 sec/mm2. The apparent dif.usion coef.icient (ADC) map was reconstructed and ADC value was measured. The mean ADC values correlated with histo-pathological results as well as f.llow-up imaging results. Results: Adequate ADC maps were obtained in 47 patients. The mean ADC values were 3.4 ± 0.12 × 10-3 mm2/sec in cystic lesion, 2.23 ± 0.08 × 10-3 mm2/sec in hemangioma, 1.94 ± 0.05 × 10-3 mm2/sec in abscess, 1.72 ± 0.07 × 10-3 in f.cal nodular hyperplasia, 1.65 ± 0.06 × 10-3 mm2/sec in adenoma, 1.62 ± 0.07 × 10-3 mm2/sec in nodular regenerative hyperplasia. The mean ADC values were signif.cantly dif.erent within benign hepatic f.cal lesions (P f.erences between the mean ADC values of.f.H, adenoma and NRH were not statistically signif.cant (P f.usion weighted MR imaging is a new imaging modality f.r diagnosis and characterization of.dif.erent benign hepatic f.cal lesions, particularly in patient with renal dysf.nction.

Back.round. A total of.10 455 new dermatology patients were seen in t he derma tology clinics of.k.ng f.hd Hospital of.the University (k.HU), Al-k.obar, East ern Saudi Arabia, between January 1990 and December 1995. We identif.ed 21 patie nts with a histopathologically conf.rmed diagnosis of.congenital nonbullous icht hyosif.rm erythroderma (CNBIE). We have reviewed the epidemiological and clinica l f.atures of.these patients. Objective. To document the epidemiological and cli nical f.atures of.patients with CNBIE in eastern Saudi Arabia. Methods. We used the dermatology outpatient department (OPD) logbook. to identif. diagnosed cases of.CNBIE f.om new patients presenting with dif.erent dermatological problems ov er a 6- year period. We used specif.cally designed data-collection protocol f.orms to extract epidemiological and clinical data f.om the patients’medical r ecords. These were entered into a computer database and analysed using standard statistical sof.ware. Resutts. A total of.21 patients (f.ve males, 16 f.males) w ith a male: f.male ratio of.0.31:1 were identif.ed f.om a total of.10 455 new pa tients seen in our dermatology clinics over the study period. The occurrence rat e of.CNBIE in our clinics was 0.2% , or two per 1000 new dermatology cases. Nin eteen (90% ) of.21 CNBIE patients were born with collodion membranes. Eighty- one per cent of.our patients had a positive f.mily history of.CNBIE. Consanguini ty among the parents of.our CNBIE patients was signif.cantly high at 95% . Conc lusions. To the best of.our k.owledge, this preliminary study is the f.rst repor t of.its k.nd f.om Saudi Arabia (documenting the clinico-epidemiological f.atu res of.CNBIE patients in the Eastern Province). The high rate of.parental consan guinity among the parents of.our Saudi CNBIE patients may account f.r the high i ncidence rate of.this genodermatosis in eastern Saudi Arabia.
