Integration of GIS and F-Hydra Model for Aquifer Vulnerability Monitoring in the Afram Plains, Ghana

Aquifer vulnerability is a critical issue across the entire globe due to the depletion of groundwater and escalation of pollution levels, which poses a detrimental effect on the natural environment. To ascertain this contamination risk, an extensive study has been conducted to assess the aquifer vulnerability by using the F-hydra model. This paper presents the vulnerability technique for the theory and application of flow accumulation, land-use and hydraulic conductivity. The model was applied to a shallow aquifer in eastern Ghana’s Volta River Basin, with the results being compared to the standardised DRASTIC model. The model follows the aquifer vulnerability assessment concept of the source pathway receptor where flow accumulation represents the ponding areas with downward percolation of contaminant to the water table, land-use represents the human activities at the land surface, and hydraulic conductivity represents the driving force leading to the movement of contaminant. The results reveal that the moderate vulnerability region covers 51.55% (2598.12 km2) of the entire area. The high and low vulnerability regions cover a significant percentage of the area 1.13% (56.52 km2) and 47.32% (2384.93 km2), respectively. The final vulnerability index was largely influenced by the removal of the hydraulic conductivity and land-use parameters. The model was validated with nitrate concentration in drilled wells in the study area. The maps produced in this study could be utilised as a guide to vulnerability by policymakers, groundwater manager and planners aimed at preserving the integrity of this vulnerable resource.

Investigations show that in monomer water heterogeneous systems polymerization, located in the interface, can disperse the system. Following polymerization in the density gradient field it is shown that in such systems latex particles are nucleated from monomer microdroplets, containing a certain amount of polymer molecules. It could be considered that, independently of the nature of the monomer itself, polymerization in monomer water statistic heterogeneous systems modulate emulsion polymerization process.

Assessment of Stress on Serum Estradiol and Cortisol Levels in Female Subordinate Naked Mole Rats Following Isolation from Natal Colony

This study investigated the effects of isolation of subordinate naked mole rats from natal colonies on their reproductive success. Naked mole rat is one of the known mammals that exhibit eusociality. It has been noted that naked mole rats have their reproduction restricted to one queen and less than three males;the rest of the animals within the colony remain sterile. The study aimed at establishing whether the reproductive suppression in subordinate naked mole rats is the outcome of social stress exerted by breeding female in the colony or other unknown environmental factors within the colony set-up. Experimental period was 20 weeks and it involved two stages, acclimatization and isolation. Before acclimation, 2 female subordinate naked mole rats were sacrificed. Blood samples were collected and appropriately preserved for later analysis. On the 2nd, 4th and 6th weeks of acclimatization, 2 female mole rats were sacrificed at each stage and blood samples were harvested for analysis. On week 7, eighteen subordinate females were isolated and randomly assigned into two groups of 9 animals each in two separate cages for 14 weeks. One week 8, 2 subordinate females from each group were randomly selected, sacrificed and blood samples collected for analysis. The same procedure was repeated on week 12 and 20 of study. Hormonal analysis was done using ELISA technique. The Statistical analysis done using student t-test at 95% confidence level and significance level was set at P < 0.05. Results showed increase in cortisol levels only in singly isolated females which were the greatest on week 8 (from 35.5 ng/ml to 123.4 ng/ml). Mean estradiol in singly isolated females was 18 ± 2.52 pg/ml while females paired with males had 19.0 ± 3.0 pg/ml hence no significant difference (paired t = -1.73, P = 0.23). Conclusively, the observed reproductive suppression among subordinate naked mole rats in natal colonies is probably due to presence of queen or other reproductive aspects that may

Among the cardiac complications of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),one increasingly reported in the literature is myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronaries(MINOCA).We reviewed all reported cases of MINOCA in COVID-19 patients to summarize its clinical features,evaluation,and *** performed a literature search in Pubmed using the search terms‘COVID-19’and‘MINOCA’or‘non-obstructive coronaries’.Among the reported cases,the mean age was 61.5 years(SD±13.4),and 50%were *** pain was the presenting symptom in five patients(62.5%),and hypertension was the most common comorbidity(62.5%).ST-elevation was seen in most patients(87.5%),and the overall mortality rate was 37.5%.MINOCA in COVID-19 is an entity with a broad differential ***,a uniform algorithm is needed in its evaluation to ensure timely diagnosis and management.

Spatial Identification of Potential Dump Disposal Sites for Effective Waste Management in the Sunyani Municipality, Ghana

One daunting task faced by waste managers is to appropriately identify safe sites for waste disposal and this study combined expert knowledge, field observations and GIS-based modelbuilder to model and identify suitable dumpsites. Overview of the study area confirmed the random siting of dumpsites that poses threat to environmental safety. Land use and land cover classification produced an overall accuracy of 81.97% with kappa coefficient = 0.78, which was employed in the suitability search criteria. Other key derived parameters vital for safe dumpsite locations were distances to catchment > 100 m, distances to water bodies > 100 m, soil characteristics—clayey, topology (slope of 2 and 4) and geology—Granitoids. The weightings (%) obtained for the key parameters were: water = 32, connection to catchment area = 28, topology = 23, soil = 10 and geology = 7. The exclusion criteria and suitability analysis, based on assigned suitable values from the key weighted parameters in the modelbuilder, produced a map of potential waste disposal sites rating them as most suitable, suitable and less suitable for the Sunyani Municipality. The model for the site identification could be used as a guideline to provide first and quick impression on potential waste disposal sites for stakeholders in waste management. The suitable sites give an indicator for sites with the least possible environmental impact. The study however recommends that for specific locations, further in-depth research be done to suit site-specific conditions in order to improve accuracy.

MISSED ABORTION

Missed abortion is a very interesting disease from the etiological, diagnostic, and medico-legal points of view. It has been considered to be a rare condition; however, while it may not be very common, certainly it is not rare. This subject has not been given the attention it deserves, and has been neglected by the obstetricians and gynecologists of the past and present. This fact was pointed out by Litzenberg in 1921, who found only 139 articles available in the literature, of which 10 were credited to American writers. Since then, there have been not more than a few articles added, and very few of these are written in the, English language. Chinese medical literature practically has no mention of the disease. For this reason, the writer desires to record the cases of missed abortion treated in this clinic, in the hope of calling our medical colleagues’ attention to the fact that it is worth while recording their cases. The writer also wishes to impress upon readers the advantages of using the X-ray and Zondek-Aschheim tests, in establishing the diagnosis of this condition.

Foreign bodies are a rare cause of appendicitis, because in most cases these ingested foreign bodies cross the digestive tract asymptomatically [1] [2] [3]. However, some penetrate the lumen of the appendix causing its inflammation. We report an unusual observation of acute appendicitis induced by a foreign body namely a bone fragment in the visceral surgery department of the Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal de Villeneuve Saint-Georges.
