Clinical Significance of Liver Function Abnormality in Patients with COVID-19:A Single-center Experience from Western India

Background and Aims:The impact of coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19)on liver function remains to be fully *** study was designed to investigate such and determine the clinical significance in determining mortality ***:A retrospective study was conducted in patients with COVID-19 from March 2020 to July *** details were retrieved from electronic medical records to obtain clinical characteristics,medical history,laboratory tests,therapeutic intervention,and outcome ***:A total of 184 patients with COVID-19 were included(median age:45.5 years),comprised of 62.5%*** total,22(12.0%)patients had severe infection and 162(88.0%)had mild to moderate ***,95(51.6%)showed abnormal liver function test(LFT)and 17(9.2%)showed normal LFT at *** median age,hospital stay,and LFT were significantly higher in severe ***-severe infection(p<0.001).Out of 12 deaths,the majority were due to severe infection(n=11).Deaths were also due to acute respiratory distress syndrome(n=5),cardiac reasons(n=3),and sepsis with multiorgan failure(n=3).The median age,hospital stay and number of intensive care unit admissions were higher in patients having abnormal LFT compared to normal *** of elevated aspartate aminotransferase(42.8%and 40.4%),alanine transaminase(43.7%and 41.6%),and hypoalbuminemia(71.4%and72.7%)at admission and discharge were more common in severe *** mean survival was significantly lower in severe infection compared to those with non-severe disease(17.2 vs.52.3 days;p<0.001).Conclusions:Incidence of abnormal liver function was higher in patients with severe COVID-19 and was associated with prolonged hospital stay;mortality was associated with severity of *** ruling out the risk of liver injury,it is crucial to vigilantly monitor the liver function parameters in patients with COVID-19 admitted to hospital.

Characterization of Generalized Uniform Distribution through Expectation

Normally the mass of a root has a uniform distribution but some have different uniform distributions named Generalized Uniform Distribution (GUD). The characterization result based on expectation of function of random variable has been obtained for generalized uniform distribution. Applications are given for illustrative purpose including a special case of uniform distribution.

Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease ranging from liver steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Besides lifestyle modifications, Vitamin E (800 IU/day) is generally recommended for NASH. Vitamin E monotherapy is not sufficient for the multifaceted disease like NALFD. The combination of Vitamin E 400IU and Fraxinus excelsior 500 mg twice daily was found to be better than vitamin E 400 IU twice daily in improving the lipid profile and liver function parameters in patients with NAFLD. We conducted a study to assess safety and effectiveness of Vitamin E plus Fraxinus excelsior in Indian patients with NAFLD in real-world settings. Patients and Methods: This was a non-interventional study in NAFLD patients with varying grades of steatosis conducted by 234 physicians across India from January 2018 to August 2018. Patients received combination of Vitamin E (400 IU) and Fraxinus excelsior (500 mg) soft gelatin capsules twice daily after meals for 12 weeks. Effectiveness of the treatment was assessed at visit 2 (6 weeks) and visit 3 (12 weeks, end of study) from baseline. The parameters for assessment included severity of liver steatosis, liver function parameters and the global assessment of safety and effectiveness. Results: A total of 1114 patients were included in the study. At baseline, majority of the patients (71.18%) had Grade II liver steatosis followed by 21.01% and 7.81% patients who had Grade III and Grade I liver steatosis, respectively. After 12 weeks of treatment with vitamin E and Fraxinus excelsior combination, 21% patients had no steatosis, 58.79% patients were in Grade 1 steatosis, 19.57% in grade II steatosis and only 0.63% patients in Grade III steatosis. The mean percentage reduction in aspartate aminotransferase (AST) level at week 6 and week 12 from baseline was 24.92% and 43.79%, respectively. Cobb Syndrome: A Case Report with Review of Clinical and Imaging Findings

Cobb syndrome is a rare entity characterized by cutaneous vascular lesions and arteriovenous malformations in the spine, both in the same metamere. This syndrome is also known as cutaneous vertebral medullary angiomatosis, cutaneomeningospinal angiomatosis, and spinal arterial metameric disorder. We report the case of a male infant diagnosed with Cobb syndrome who was treated surgically. The presence of a cutaneous vascular lesion in this patient prompted subsequent imaging for spinal angioma or AVM in the same dermatome. Early recognition in this patient was shown to be life-changing, as patients with Cobb syndrome who have undergone early intervention have shown to be without neurologic deficit or have a halt in progression of symptoms.

Characterization of Power-Function Distribution through Expectation

For the characterization of the power function distribution, one needs any arbitrary non constant function only in place of independence of suitable function of order statistics, linear relation of conditional expectation, recurrence relations between expectations of function of order statistics, distributional properties of exponential distribution, record valves, lower record statistics, product of order statistics and Lorenz curve, etc. available in the literature. The goal of this research is not to give a different path-breaking approach for the characterization of power function distribution through the expectation of non constant function of random variable and provide a method to characterize the power function distribution as remark. Examples are given for the illustrative purpose.

Turn-on fluorescence probe for selective detection of Hg(Ⅱ)by calixpyrrole hydrazide reduced silver nanoparticle: Application to real water sample

A simple and quick method for the synthesis of water dispersible stable silver nanoparticles has been developed. Calix[4]pyrrole octahydrazide （CPOH）, has been successfully used as a reducing as well as stabilizing agent for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. CPOH-AgNps have been duly characterized by SPR, PSA, TEM and EDX-ray. The ability of CPOH-AgNps as selective and sensitive sensor for various ions （Pb（Ⅱ）, Cd（II）, Mn（Ⅱ）, Fe（Ⅲ）, Ni（Ⅱ）, Zn（Ⅱ）, Hg（Ⅱ）, Co（Ⅱ）, Cu（Ⅱ）） by colorimetry and spectrofluorimetry has been explored. CPOH-AgNps were found to be selective only for Hg（Ⅱ） ions. Nanomolar concentration of Hg（Ⅱ） ions can also be determined by spectrofluorimetry by increase in fluorescence intensity. Linear range of detection of Hg（Ⅱ） ions in water was found to be from 1nmol/L to mol/L. The method has been successfully applied for determination of Hg（Ⅱ） ions in ground water and industrial effluent waste water samples.
