Prediction of the Average Decay Heat per Fission for mOX Nuclear Fuel

mIXED Oxide Nuclear fuel (mOX) contains both uranium and plutonium in oxidized form. It is important to calculate the nuclear decay heat due to the single thermal fission (fission due to 0.0235 eV neutron) for all fissile nuclei in the mOX fuels (U235, Pu239, and Pu241). These fissile nuclei are the main source of the decay heat in mOX fuel. Decay heat calculation of the weighted fissile material content in mOX fuel is also important. A numerical method was used in this work to calculate the concentrations of all fission products due to the individual thermal fission of the three fissile materials as a function of time N(t). The decay heat calculations for the three fissile materials are directly calculated using the summation method by knowing the different concentrations of fission products over time. The average decay heat of the mOX fuel in induced thermal fission is also concluded. The most influential nuclei in the decay heat were also identified. The method used has been validated by several comparisons before, but the new in this work is using the most recent Evaluated Nuclear Data Library ENDF/B-VIII.0. Calculations of decay heat show very common trends for a period of 107 sec after the fission burst of thermal fissions of individual fissile nuclei. moreover, the code showed high capability in calculating the fission fragments inventories and decay heats due to the decay of fission fragments of 31 fissionable nuclei.

Quasi-inverse Pendulum model of 12 DoF Bipedal Walking

This paper presents modeling of a 12-degree of freedom （DoF） bipedal robot, focusing on the lower limbs of the system, and trajectory design for walking on straight path. Gait trajectories are designed by modeling of center of mass （Com） trajectory and swing foot ankle trajectory based on stance foot ankle. The dynamic equations of motion of the bipedal robot are derived by considering the system as a quasi inverted pendulmn （QIP） model. The direction and acceleration of Com movement of the QIP model is determined by the position of Com relative to the centre of pressure （COP）. To determine heel-contact and toe-off, two custom designed switches are attached with heel and toe positions of each foot. Four force sensitive resistor （FSR） sensors are also placed at the plantar surface to measure pressure that is induced on each foot while walking which leads to the calculation of CoP trajectory. The paper also describes forward kinematic （FIK） and inverse kinematic （IK） investigations of the biped model where Denavit-Hartenberg （D-H） representation and Geometric-Trigonometric （G-T） formulation approach are applied. Experiments are carried out to ensure the reliability of the proposed model where the links of the bipedal system follow the best possible trajectories while walking on straight path.

Fission Fragment Decay Heat by Using the most Recent Evaluated Nuclear Data Library ENDF/B-VIII

In this paper, a home-made code was designed to calculate the decay heat emitted by fission fragments as a result of successive radioactive emissions after a fission burst. The nuclear data necessary for the calculations was extracted from the latest version of the Evaluated Nuclear Data Library ENDF/B-VIII.0. The code can calculate the decay heat of thermal and fast neutron-induced fission reactions on the isotopes of Thorium, Protactinium, Uranium, Neptunium, Plutonium, Americium, Curium, California, Einsteinium, and Fermium. A numerical method was used in this work to calculate the decay heat of all fission fragments due to the individual thermal or fast fissions of the isotopes of the previous ten actinides. The most influential nuclei in the decay heat were also identified at different times after the fission event. moreover, the code showed high capability in calculating the fission fragments inventories and decay heats due to the decay of fission fragments of 31 fissionable nuclei.

Axial response and material efficiency of tapered helical piles

Different techniques have been proposed to increase the bearing capacity of open-ended *** helices to the shaft and tapering the pile shaft could be used simultaneously to enhance the static and dynamic behaviors of these *** paper subjects the bearing capacity,stiffness,frictional behavior,and material efficiency of the tapered helical piles to *** helical piles are introduced herein as an alternative option to improve the material efficiency of hollow *** on the Taguchi method,a series of experiments was designed and *** axial responses of tapered helical piles are also investigated using finite element *** results derived from loadedisplacement curves and strain gages are used to characterize the axial compression responses of tapered helical *** effects of tapered angle,helices diameter and helices distance are examined using dimensionless parameters,and the degree of contribution of these factors is calculated on each of the enumerated variables *** results show that the shaft friction resistance of tapered helical piles increases continuously with the pile head ***,the effect of tapered wall on the shaft friction resistance is more tangible at low stress *** results showed that the relative material efficiency factor of the optimum pile could be 2.5 times that of unoptimized pile with a similar quantity of material.

Sintering behavior, microstructure and properties of TiC-FeCr hard alloy

TiC based cermets were produced with FeCr, as a binder, by conventional P/m （powder metallurgy） to near 〉97% of the theoretical density. Sintering temperature significantly affects the mechanical properties of the composite. The sintering temperature of 〉1360℃ caused severe chemical reaction between TiC particles and the binder phase. In the TiC-FeCr cermets, the mechanical properties did not vary linearly with the carbide content. Optimum mechanical properties were found in the composite containing 57wt% TiC reinforcement, when sintered at 1360℃ for 1 h. Use of carbon as an additive enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites. Cermets containing carbon as an additive with 49wt% TiC exhibited attractive mechanical properties. The microstructure of the developed composite contained less or no debonding, representing good wettabifity of the binder with TiC particles. Homogeneous distribution of the TiC particles ensured the presence of isotropic mechanical properties and homogeneous distribution of stresses in the composite. Preliminary experiments for evaluation of the oxidation resistance of FeCr bonded TiC cermets indicate that they are more resistant than WC-Co hardmetals.

Elastic mechanical Stress Analysis in a 2D-FGm Thick Finite Length Hollow Cylinder with Newly Developed material model

In this paper a new 2D-FGm material model based on mori-Tanaka scheme and third-order transition function has been developed for a thick hollow cylinder of finite *** mechanical stress analysis is performed by utilizing the finite element *** corresponding material,displacement and stress distributions are evaluated for different values of nr and ***,the effects of different material property distributions on the effective stress with respect to the metallic phase volume fraction are *** is demonstrated that the increase in nr and V_m leads to a significant reduction in the effective ***,it is shown that the ceramic phase rich cylinder wall has lower maximum effective stresses of which the lowest value of effective stress has been evaluated for nr=20 and nz=*** minimum value is about half the maximum effective stress which has been evaluated for the non-FGm cylinder case（nr=nz=0.1）.

Effect of application rate and irrigation on the movement and dissipation of indaziflam

Indaziflam is a new preemergence herbicide for the control of annual grass and broadleaf weeds in various cropping systems including pecan *** objectives of this study were to（1） determine the mobility and dissipation of indaziflam and（2） evaluate herbicide efficacy in a flood-irrigated pecan orchard in southern New mexico,*** was applied at 0,35.5,and 73.1 g/ha in areas with（impacted） and without（unimpacted） tree injury *** samples were collected at 0-15,15-30,and 30-46 cm depths 25,63,90,and 125 days after the first herbicide *** soil samples were collected 4,30,and 55 days after the second *** was detected in soil samples collected at each depth,suggesting movement with irrigation *** concentrations decreased with increasing soil depth and *** mass recoveries were greater in the unimpacted area than in the impacted area after the first and second *** half-lives of indaziflam in the soil ranged from 30 to 85 days for total indaziflam recovered from the entire soil profile after the first and second applications in both *** percent weed control was similar in the impacted and unimpacted areas for both rates of indaziflam on 25 and 53 days after application;however,on 90 days after the application,percent weed control was lower in the impacted than unimpacted area.

Prediction of Vibration Characteristics in Beam Structure Using Sub-Scale modeling with Experimental Validation

Geometric or sub-scale modeling techniques are used for the evaluation of large and complex dynamic structures to ensure accurate reproduction of load path and thus leading to true dynamic characteristics of such structures. The sub-scale modeling technique is very effective in the prediction of vibration characteristics of original large structure when the experimental testing is not feasible due to the absence of a large testing facility. Previous researches were more focused on free and harmonic vibration case with little or no consideration for readily encountered random vibration. A sub-scale modeling technique is proposed for estimating the vibration characteristics of any large scale structure such as Launch vehicles, mega structures, etc., under various vibration load cases by utilizing precise scaled-down model of that dynamic structure. In order to establish an analytical correlation between the original structure and its scaled models, different scale models of isotropic cantilever beam are selected and analyzed under various vibration conditions（ i.e. free, harmonic and random） using finite element package ANSYS. The developed correlations are also validated through experimental testing The prediction made from the vibratory response of the scaled-down beam through the established sets of correlation are found similar to the response measured from the testing of original beam structure. The established correlations are equally applicable in the prediction of dynamic characteristics of any complex structure through its scaled-down models. This paper presents modified sub-scale modeling technique that enables accurate prediction of vibration characteristics of large and complex structure under not only sinusoidal but also for random vibrations.
