Removal of Reactive Red 198 from aqueous solution by combined method multi-walled carbon nanotubes and zero-valent iron:Equilibrium,kinetics,and thermodynamic

Dyes often include toxic,carcinogenic compounds and are harmful to humans' health.Therefore,removal of dyes from textile industry wastewater is essential.The present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the combination of zero valent iron(ZVI) powder and multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) in the removal of Reactive Red 198(RR198) dye from aqueous solution.This applied research was performed in a batch system in the laboratory scale.This study investigated the effect of various factors influencing dye removal,including contact time,p H,adsorbent dose,iron powder dose,initial dye concentration,and temperature.The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using three common adsorption models:Langmuir,Freundlich and Temkin.Besides,kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were used to establish the adsorption mechanism.The results showed,in pH =3,contact time = 100 min,ZVI dose = 5000 mg·L^(-1),and MWCNTs dose = 600 mg·L^(-1)in 100 mg·L^(-1)dye concentration,the adsorption efficiency increased to 99.16%.Also,adsorption kinetics was best described by the pseudo-second-order model.Equilibrium data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm(R2= 0.99).The negative values of ΔG0and the positive value of ΔH0(91.76) indicate that the RR198 adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic.According to the results,the combination of MWCNTs and ZVI was highly efficient in the removal of azo dyes.

Water quality and occurrence of water-borne diseases in the Gaza strip are vivid examples for most developing societies. In recent years, the quality and quantity of groundwater, the only source of waters in the Gaza strip, have deteriorated markedly. A general rundown of the infrastructure and water distribution networks, in particular, the spread of cesspools, excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers, and improper treatment and disposal of wastewater remain major contributing factors to the continued deterioration in the water status in the Gaza strip. Without a doubt, the (Israeli)-Palestinian conflict had a clear negative impact on the water sector in the Gaza strip. Apparently, there is a dire need to adopt the WHO’s water safety plan in the management of Gaza’s water supply systems from catchment to consumer’s tap in order to maintain the sustainability and quality of water resources and prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Therefore, this review has been prepared to highlight the overall picture of the water dilemma in the Gaza strip in the last years and in addition, to identify the sources, sorts, levels, and health risks of consequence to microbial contamination of water. The impact of political conflicts on the water sector in the Gaza strip also was reviewed. Furthermore, recommendations were formulated in order to assist and guide future researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers to avoid the more exacerbation of water contamination as well as to protect public health.

Chimeric antigen receptor T(CAR-T)cell therapy represents a breakthrough in personalized cancer treatments.In this regard,synthetic receptors comprised of antigen recognition domains,signaling,and stimulatory domains are used to reprogram T-cells to target tum or cells and destroy them.Despite the success of this approach in refractory B-cell malignancies,the optimal potency of CAR T-cell therapy for many other cancers,particularly solid tumors,has not been validated.Natural killer cells are powerful cytotoxic lymphocytes specialized in recognizing and dispensing the tumor cells in coordination with other anti-tumor immunity cells.Based on these studies,many investigations are focused on the accurate designing of CAR T-cells with clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats(CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9(Cas9)system or other novel gene editing tools that can induce hereditary changes with or without the presence of a double-stranded break into the genome.These methodologies can be specifically focused on negative controllers of T-cells,induce modifications to a particular gene,and produce reproducible,safe,and powerful allogeneic CAR T-cells for on-demand cancer immunotherapy.The improvement of the CRISPR/Cas9 innovation offers an adaptable and proficient gene-editing capability in activating different pathways to help natural killer cells interact with novel CARs to particularly target tumor cells.Novel achievements and future challenges of combining next-generation CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing tools to optimize CAR T-cell and natural killer cell treatment for future clinical trials toward the foundation of modern cancer treatments have been assessed inthis review.

CRISPR/Cas9 is an effective gene editing tool with broad applications for the pre-vention or treatment of numerous diseases.It depends on CRiSPR(clustered regularly inter-spaced short palindromic repeats)as a bacterial immune system and plays as a gene editing tool.Due to the higher specificity and efficiency of CRISPR/Cas9 compared to other editing ap-proaches,it has been broadly investigated to treat numerous hereditary and acquired ill-nesses,including cancers,hemolytic diseases,immunodeficiency disorders,cardiovascular diseases,visual maladies,neurodegenerative conditions,and a few X-linked disorders.CRISPR/Cas9 system has been used to treat cancers through a variety of approaches,with sta-ble gene editing techniques.Here,the applications and clinical trials of CRisPR/Cas9 in various illnesses are described.Due to its high precision and efficiency,CRISPR/Cas9 strategies may treat gene-related illnesses by deleting,inserting,modifying,or blocking the expression of specific genes.The most challenging barrier to the in vivo use of CRISPR/Cas9 like off-target effects will be discussed.The use of transfection vehicles for CRISPR/Cas9,including viral vectors(such as an Adeno-associated virus(AAV),and the development of non-viral vectors is also considered.

Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society orthopedic surgeons in the United States:An analysis of geographical distribution,academic,leadership,and demographic characteristics

BACKGROUND The Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society(LLRS)is a premier orthopedic specialty organization that promotes limb reconstruction for all ages.LLRS membership characteristics,however,are poorly reported.This study delineates orthopedic surgeon LLRS members’demographic traits,academic achievement,leadership attainment,and geographical distribution across the United States.AIM To inform aspiring orthopedic professionals,as well as to promote growth and diversity in both the LLRS organization and overarching field.METHODS This cross-sectional study examined United States LLRS members’academic,leadership,demographic,and geographical attributes.After reviewing the 2023 LLRS member directory,Google search results were matched to the listings and appended to the compiled data.Sex and ethnicity were evaluated visually utilizing retrieved images.The Hirsch index(H-index)of academic activity,residency and fellowship training,other graduate degrees,leadership positions,practice type(academic or non-academic),and spoken languages were categorized.LLRS members per state and capita determined geographic distribution.The Mann Whitney U test was applied to compare H-index between males and females,as well as to assess member differences pertaining to affiliation with academic vs non-academic practice facilities.RESULTS The study included 101 orthopedic surgeons,78(77.23%)Caucasian and 23(22.77%)non-Caucasian,79(78.22%)male and 22(21.78%)female.Surgeons with DO degrees comprised only 3.96%(4)of the cohort,while the vast majority held MDs[96.04%(97)].Mean H-index was 10.55,with male surgeons having a significantly higher score(P=0.002).Most orthopedic surgeons(88.12%,)practiced in academic centers.Of those professionals who occupied leadership positions,14%were women,while 86%were men.Additionally,19(37.25%)United States regions and the District of Columbia lacked an LLRS-member orthopedic surgeon.Total per capita rate across the United States was 0.30 LLRS orthopedic surgeons per 1 million people.CONCLUSION Over 21

Assessment of rehabilitation strategies for lakes affected by anthropogenic and climatic changes: A case study of the Urmia Lake, Iran

Over the last three decades,more than half of the world's large lakes and wetlands have experienced significant shrinkage,primarily due to climate change and extensive water consumption for agriculture and other human needs.The desiccation of lakes leads to severe environmental,economic,and social repercussions.Urmia Lake,located in northwestern Iran and representing a vital natural ecosystem,has experienced a volume reduction of over 90.0%.Our research evaluated diverse water management strategies within the Urmia Lake basin and prospects of inter-basin water transfers.This study focused on strategies to safeguard the environmental water rights of the Urmia Lake by utilizing the modeling and simulating(MODSIM)model.The model simulated changes in the lake's water volume under various scenarios.These included diverting water from incoming rivers,cutting agricultural water use by 40.0%,releasing dam water in non-agricultural seasons,treated wastewater utilization,and inter-basin transfers.Analytical hierarchy process(AHP)was utilized to analyze the simulation results.Expert opinions with AHP analysis,acted as a multi-criteria decision-making tool to evaluate the simulation and determine the optimal water supply source priority for the Urmia Lake.Our findings underscore the critical importance of reducing agricultural water consumption as the foremost step in preserving the lake.Following this,inter-basin water transfers are suggested,with a detailed consideration of the inherent challenges and limitations faced by the source watersheds.It is imperative to conduct assessments on the impacts of these transfers on the downstream users and the potential environmental risks,advocating for a diplomatic and cooperative approach with adjacent country.This study also aims to forecast the volumes of water that can be transferred under different climatic conditions—drought,normal,and wet years—to inform strategic water management planning for the Urmia Lake.According to our projection,implementing the strategic scenarios outl

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most frequent and the second most fatal cancer.The search for more effective drugs to treat this disease is ongoing.A better understanding of the mechanisms of CRC development and progression may reveal new therapeutic strategies.Ubiquitin-specific peptidases(USPs),the largest group of the deubiquitinase protein family,have long been implicated in various cancers.There have been numerous studies on the role of USPs in CRC;however,a comprehensive view of this role is lacking.AIM To provide a systematic review of the studies investigating the roles and functions of USPs in CRC.METHODS We systematically queried the MEDLINE(via PubMed),Scopus,and Web of Science databases.RESULTS Our study highlights the pivotal role of various USPs in several processes implicated in CRC:Regulation of the cell cycle,apoptosis,cancer stemness,epithelial–mesenchymal transition,metastasis,DNA repair,and drug resistance.The findings of this study suggest that USPs have great potential as drug targets and noninvasive biomarkers in CRC.The dysregulation of USPs in CRC contributes to drug resistance through multiple mechanisms.CONCLUSION Targeting specific USPs involved in drug resistance pathways could provide a novel therapeutic strategy for overcoming resistance to current treatment regimens in CRC.

Isoimperatorin alleviates acetic acid-induced colitis in rats

Objective:To investigate the effect of isoimperatorin on histopathological and biochemical changes in acetic acid-induced colitis rats.Methods:Colitis was induced by intracolonic administration of acetic acid solution(4%v/v)in rats.Rats were divided into six groups including the sham group,the negative control group,the dexamethasone-treated group,and the groups treated with isoimperatorin(0.1,1,and 10 mg/kg/d by gavage).The treatments were administered for three days and then colonic status was assessed by macroscopic,histopathological,and biochemical analyses.Results:Isoimperatorin significantly alleviated colonic damage in a dose-dependent manner and improved histological changes in rats with acetic acid-induced colitis.It also significantly reduced myeloperoxidase,TNF-α,IL-1β,and malodialdehyde levels.Conclusions:Isoimperatorin alleviates acetic acid-induced colitis in rats and may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of colitis.

Enhancing the Robustness of Visual Object Tracking via Style Transfer

The performance and accuracy of computer vision systems are affected by noise in different forms.Although numerous solutions and algorithms have been presented for dealing with every type of noise,a comprehensive technique that can cover all the diverse noises and mitigate their damaging effects on the performance and precision of various systems is still missing.In this paper,we have focused on the stability and robustness of one computer vision branch(i.e.,visual object tracking).We have demonstrated that,without imposing a heavy computational load on a model or changing its algorithms,the drop in the performance and accuracy of a system when it is exposed to an unseen noise-laden test dataset can be prevented by simply applying the style transfer technique on the train dataset and training the model with a combination of these and the original untrained data.To verify our proposed approach,it is applied on a generic object tracker by using regression networks.This method’s validity is confirmed by testing it on an exclusive benchmark comprising 50 image sequences,with each sequence containing 15 types of noise at five different intensity levels.The OPE curves obtained show a 40%increase in the robustness of the proposed object tracker against noise,compared to the other trackers considered.

Effect of cOVID-19 pneumonia infection control protocols on nosocomial infection incidence in trauma patients

Purpose:Nosocomial infection is a major threat to the health care system and patient welfare.After the pandemic,new protocols were established in hospitals and communities to protect against the transmission of cOvID-19,which may have changed the incidence of nosocomial transmission.This study was conducted to compare the incidence of nosocomial infection before and after the covID-19 pandemic.Methods:This was a retrospective cohort study performed on trauma patients who were admitted,from May 22,2018 to November 22,2021,to the largest level-1 trauma center in Shiraz,Iran(Shahid Rajaei Trauma Hospital).All the trauma patients over 15 years old admitted during the study time were included in this study.Individuals who were declared dead upon arrival were excluded.Patients were evaluated in 2 periods:before the pandemic(May 22,2018-February 19,2020)and after the pandemic(February 19,2020-November 22,2021).Patients were assessed based on demographic information(age,gender,length of hospital stay,and patient outcome),the occurrence of hospital infection,and the type of infection.The analysis was done using SPSS version 25.Results:Overall,60,561 patients were admitted,with a mean age of 40 years.Nosocomial infection was diagnosed in 4.00%(n=2423)of all admitted patients.The incidence rate of post-COVID-19 hospitalacquired infections decreased by 16.28%(p<0.001)when compared to before the pandemic;in contrast,surgical site infection(p<0.001)and urinary tract infection(p=0.043)were responsible for this change,while hospital-acquired pneumonia(p=0.568)and bloodstream infection(p=0.156)were not significantly different.Overall mortality was 1.79%,while 28.52%of all patients with nosocomial infections died.During the pandemic,there was a 25.78%increase(p<0.001)in the overall incidence rate of mortality,which was also observed among patients with nosocomial infections(17.84%).Conclusion:The incidence of nosocomial infection has decreased during the pandemic,possibly due to the use of more personal protective equipment and mo
