Understanding the determinants of household cooking-fuel choice in sub-Saharan Africa: evidence from Nigeria

Overreliance on traditional cooking fuels by agricultural households poses a significant obstacle to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 by 2030 in Nigeria. Despite the emerging recognition of remittances as a crucial factor influencing cooking-fuel choices in the energy-transition literature, there is a paucity of studies examining this influence in Nigeria. Using data from 4400 agricultural households sourced from the fourth wave of the Nigerian Living Standard Measurement Survey data sets, this study examined the influence of remittances on cooking-fuel choices, among other factors in Nigeria. Employing descriptive statistics and the multinomial logit regression model, the analysis reveals that traditional cooking fuels, including wood, crop residue and animal dung, continue to dominate the cooking-fuel landscape. The empirical result of the multinomial logit model showed that households that receive remittances are more likely to use modern cooking fuels. Furthermore, wealthier, more educated households with access to electricity are more likely to use modern and transitional cooking fuels than traditional cooking fuels. Based on the findings, the study suggests the incentivization of remittances into the country through the reduction in associated transaction costs and accelerated public infrastructural investment in affordable electricity and good road networks to connect rural areas to gas-supply networks to drive the transition to modern cooking energy. Additionally, educational and awareness campaigns about the health risks associated with traditional cooking energy, particularly indoor air pollution, should be encouraged, especially in rural areas. Simultaneous Adsorption of Aqueous Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ Using Surfactant-Modified and Unmodified Activated Carbon in a Fixed Bed Column

The goal of this work is to improve the simultaneous removal of Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ ions from synthetic wastewater in a fixed bed column by incorporating sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) onto the surface of activated carbon made from coconut shells. The activated carbons were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX). The adsorption column dynamics were studied by varying the flow rates (5, 10 and 15 mL/min), bed heights (10, 15 and 20 cm), and initial concentrations (50, 150, and 250 mg/L). The activated carbon has a pore volume of 0.715 cm3/g and a BET-specific surface area of 1410 m2/g. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant incorporation onto the surface of the activated carbon enhances its capacity for simultaneous adsorption of Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ from the aqueous medium. The affinity of the heavy metals to both unmodified (AC) and modified (AC-SDS) activated carbons followed the order of Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+. The dynamic adsorption of the column depends on the flow rate, bed height, initial metal concentration, and SDS surface modification. With a 5 mL/min flow rate, a 20 cm bed height, and a 50 mg/L initial metal concentration, a maximum break-through time of 150 minutes for the unmodified activated carbon (AC) and 180 minutes for the SDS-modified activated carbon (AC-SDS) was reached.

Palynology and stratigraphy of the Upper Miocene Chad Formation, Bornu Basin,northeastern Nigeria

Both lithological and palynological analyses were employed to decipher sedimentary stacking patterns and to date the sediments within the interval 50—325 m in Kemar-1 well,Bornu Basin,northeastern *** different lithofacies units deposited in various environments were *** are:(1) the grayish sandy claystone,rich in organic matter and associated with lignite,deposited in a continental to lacustrine environment;(2) the micaceous claystone,rich in muscovite flakes and organic matter,deposited in a lacustrine environment;(3) the lithified claystone which intercalates the dark gray shale,and deposited in a marine setting;(4) the shale;(5) the micaceous sandstone,which is characterized by presence of muscovite,silty to granular grain sizes,well sorted and deposited in a meandering setting;(6) the poorly-sorted *** is poorly sorted,poorly-graded,and coarse-grained,with erosive surfaces to underlying facies,and deposited in a fluvial environment;(7) the heterolithic clayey sandstone,poorly graded,grayish,with a degree of organic richness,suggesting an anoxic lacustrine environment;and(8) the grayish claystone which is nonlithic and rarely ferruginized marking the Upper Miocene/Eocene *** main palynological zone,i.e.,the Echitricolporites spinosus assemblage zone,has been *** base of the studied section at 385 m is characterized by the last up-hole occurrence of Grimsdalea magnaclavata suggestive of Eocene boundary while the overlying sediments are characterized by Late Miocene marker species such as ***,Elaeis guineensis,Anthocerus sp.,Nymphaea lotus,and *** *** Chad Formation is dated as Late Miocene age unconformably overlying the Eocene Kerri-Kerri Formation which indicated that the Chad Formation was probably deposited during an alternation of lacustrine and continental settings,due to climatic change.

Theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skill acquisition of basic life support training programme among secondary school students

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to evaluate the theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skill acquisition of basic life support(BLS) by a group of secondary school students in Nigeria pre and post BLS training. METHODS: This was quasi-experimental study design with 210 participants. They were taught on adult BLS and all the participants practiced BLS on a Resusci-Anne manikin immediately after the training. Data were collected using American Heart Association(AHA) structured questionnaire and psychomotor skills checklist for BLS at baseline, and post BLS ***: The pre-training knowledge score was 1.9±1.4. This increased after the BLS training to 11.4±2.4, and the mean difference between the pre and post BLS training scores was 9.48571. Pre-training psychomotor skill score was 0.00±0.00, this increased to 8.9±1.9 after the training, and the mean difference was 8.90000. The knowledge and psychomotor skill difference between pre and post BLS training was signifi cant(P<0.000).CONCLUSION: Most Nigerian secondary school students were not knowledgeable about BLS. Therefore, there is need for the creation of more awareness among the students.

Isolation and evaluation of antiglycation potential of polyalthic acid(furano-terpene)from Daniella oliveri

A furano-diterpene（polyalthic acid） was isolated as a major stable compound for the first time from the oleoresin of the Daniella oliveri of the family Caesalpiniacea through column chromatography *** acid was characterized using data obtained from EIMS,HREIMS,ESI-MS,MALDI-MS as well as 1D and 2D NMR and it was evaluated for its potential to inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end-products（AGEs） using a standard in vitro antiglycation *** acid indicated a negative antiglycation potential compared to standard inhibitor that has 85%inhibition,which is an indication that polyalthic acid may not contribute to the antiglycation activity of the plant as acclaimed in folkloric *** negative antiglycation observed could indicate that the polyalthic acid could trigger glycation,thereby subjecting users to various degrees of *** bioactivity evaluation on molinspiration evaluator indicated that polyalthic acid could be a potential drug *** biological and chemical insights gained on polyalthic acid provide a good basis for future research.

This paper proposes a modified version of the Dwarf Mongoose Optimization Algorithm (IDMO) for constrained engineering design problems. This optimization technique modifies the base algorithm (DMO) in three simple but effective ways. First, the alpha selection in IDMO differs from the DMO, where evaluating the probability value of each fitness is just a computational overhead and contributes nothing to the quality of the alpha or other group members. The fittest dwarf mongoose is selected as the alpha, and a new operator ω is introduced, which controls the alpha movement, thereby enhancing the exploration ability and exploitability of the IDMO. Second, the scout group movements are modified by randomization to introduce diversity in the search process and explore unvisited areas. Finally, the babysitter's exchange criterium is modified such that once the criterium is met, the babysitters that are exchanged interact with the dwarf mongoose exchanging them to gain information about food sources and sleeping mounds, which could result in better-fitted mongooses instead of initializing them afresh as done in DMO, then the counter is reset to zero. The proposed IDMO was used to solve the classical and CEC 2020 benchmark functions and 12 continuous/discrete engineering optimization problems. The performance of the IDMO, using different performance metrics and statistical analysis, is compared with the DMO and eight other existing algorithms. In most cases, the results show that solutions achieved by the IDMO are better than those obtained by the existing algorithms.

Application of artificial intelligence in predicting the dynamics of bottom hole pressure for under-balanced drilling:Extra tree compared with feed forward neural network model

This study used six fields data alongside correlation heat map to evaluate the field parameters that affect the accuracy of bottom hole pressure(BHP)*** six oil field data were acquired using measurement while drilling device to collect surface measurements of the downhole pressure data while *** the two case studies,measured field data of the wellbore filled with gasified mud system was utilized,and the wellbores were drilled using rotary jointed drill *** Randomized Tree and feed forward neural network algorithms were used to develop models that can predict with high accuracy,BHP from measured field *** modeling purpose,an extensive data from six fields was used,and the proposed model was further validated with two data from two new *** gathered data encompasses a variety of well data,general information/data,depths,hole size,and *** developed model was compared with data obtained from two new fields based on its capability,stability and *** result and model’s performance from the error analysis revealed that the two proposed Extra Tree and Feed Forward models replicate the bottom hole pressure data with R2 greater than *** high values of R^(2) for the two models suggest the relative reliability of the modelling *** magnitudes of mean squared error and mean absolute percentage error for the predicted BHPs from both models range from 0.33 to 0.34 and 2.02%-2.14%,for the Extra tree model and 0.40-0.41 and 3.90%e3.99%for Feed Forward model respectively;the least errors were recorded for the Extra Tree ***,the mean absolute error of the Extra Tree model for both fields(9.13-10.39 psi)are lower than that of the Feed Forward model(10.98-11 psi),thus showing the higher precision of the Extra Tree model relative to the Feed Forward *** has shown that underbalanced operation does not guarantee the improvement of horizontal well’s extension ability,because it mainly depends on t

Effects of sawdust soil amendment on the soil, growth and yield of Solanum esculentum Linn. in waste engine oil-polluted soil

This study investigated the effects of sawdust as a soil amendment on certain growth parameters of Solanum esculentum Linn. grown in soil polluted with various concentrations of waste engine oil, and changes in the physicochemical proper- ties of the soil. The purpose was to assess the soil remediation potentials of sawdust in waste engine oil-polluted soil. The experiment was divided into three regimes： control （air-dried soil without waste engine oil and with clean sawdust）, pol- luted （waste engine oil-contaminated soil）, and amended （oil-polluted soil amended with sawdust）. Enough 3-kg soil samples were sieved and air-dried to prepare five treatment levels of waste engine oil-contaminated soil （30 mL, 1%; 60 mL, 2%; 90 mL, 3%; 120 mL, 4%; and 150 mL, 5%）, as well as five additional treatment levels （the same amounts ofoil contamination） in soil amended with sawdust. The treatment levels were replicated five times in a completely randomized design. A nursery bed was planted with a hybrid tomato variety （Roma V F） obtained from National Horticultural Research Institute （NIHORT） in Ibadan, Nigeria. During the maturation period, the growth parameters such as plant height, number of leaves, and number of branches per plant were determined and then the harvested plants were oven dried at 70 ℃for 48 hours to determine their dry weights. The effects of the sawdust amendment on the soil were assessed by determining the soil pH （glass electrode pH meter）, total nitrogen （Kjeldahl method）, total phosphorus （Bray-1 solution）, and potassium （on the leacheate by a flame photometer）. Chromium, lead, and cadmium contents were determined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Analysis of variance and a Duncan multiple-range test were employed to test significant differences in the soil properties of the three regimes.
