The Secular Tendency of the Age at Menarche in a Representative Sample of Mexican Girls from an Urban Zone in Central Mexico

Objective: To investigate the age at menarche, pubarche and telarche in a representative sample of residents of an urban zone of Leon, Guanajuato, Central Mexico and to evaluate the secular change of the age at menarche between 1985 and 2000. Methods: Using status quo and retrospective methods, menarcheal, pubarcheal and telarcheal status of girls 8 - 17 years of age (n = 1093) were determined. Multiple regression analysis and logistic regression were used to determine factors that were related to or predictive of age at menarche. Results: Median ages for menarche, pubarche and telarche in our studied sample were: 11.9 ± 0.04;11.13 ± 1.25 and 10.84 ± 1.34 years, respectively. A direct correlation was found between the age of menarche of adolescents and that of their mother (p p p = 0.001), but an indirect correlation was found with the girls’ hip circumference (p = 0.004). We demonstrated a clear secular tendency towards an earlier onset of menarche by comparing our results (11.9 ± 0.04) with data from 1985 (12.8 ± 1.3) for adolescents from the same city. Conclusion: We demonstrated a clear reduction in age at menarche of approximately 0.75 year/decade, higher than Tanner’s finding in 1962, but similar than that of Malina et al. in 2004.

Investigation of particle-wall interaction in a pseudo-2D fluidized bed using CFD-DEM simulations

We report on discrete element method simulations of a pseudo-two-dimensional （pseudo-2D） fluidized bed to investigate particle-wall interactions. Detailed information on macroscopic flow field variables, including solids pressure, granular temperature, and normal and tangential wall stresses are analyzed. The normal wall stress differs from the solids pressure because of the strong anisotropic flow behavior in the pseudo-2D system. A simple linear relationship exists between normal wall stress and solids pressure. In addition, an effective friction coefficient can be derived to characterize particle-wall flow interaction after evaluating the normal and tangential wall stresses. The effects of inter-particle and particle-wall friction coefficients are evaluated. Strong anisotropic flow behavior in the pseudo-2D system needs to be considered to validate the two-fluid model where the boundary condition is usually developed based on an isotropic assumption. The conclusion has been confirmed by simulation with different particle stiffnesses. Assumptions in the newly developed model for 2D simulation are further examined against the discrete element method simulation.

Transient Charge Trapping in Eu^(3+)-Doped Nanocomposites by Ultrafast Laser Excitation

Eu^3＋ was incorporated as probe ions into nanocomposite glasses, such as metal silver doped phosphate glass and crystalline nanocomposites Si-enriched SiO2 glass. Luminescence studies show that the doped europium ions are present as trivalent Eu^3＋ , and are distributed in the matrix on the boundary surface of nanoparticles. The valence switching from Eu^3＋ to Eu^2＋ was observed in Si-SiO2 nanocomposites when ultrafast laser excitation was applied. In silver metal nan-oparticles embedded aluminophosphate glass, a time-resolved ultrafast degenerate-four-wave-mixing （DFWM） experiment shows enhanced third-order nonlinearity at zero-delay time, followed by a bell-like signal buildup. It is attributed to the creation of electronic polaron and vibronic Wannier-Mott exciton （WME）. In europium codoped sample, however, the bell-like signal is depressed. All the above observations are interpreted as the result of a strong Coulomb interaction between conduction electrons produced inside the nanoparticles by laser excitation and Eu^3＋ ions residing near the surface. The trivalent europium ions play the role as positive boundary charges attracting electrons. This results in temporary formation of Eu^2＋ , and blocks the resonant tunneling transition in the silver-glass system to avoid creating large radius polaron.

In this paper we provide a complete description of linear biseparating maps between spaces lip0（X^a, E） of Banach-valued little Lipschitz functions vanishing at infinity on locally com-pact HSlder metric spaces X^a=（X,dx^a） with 0〈a〈***, it is proved that any linear bijection T ： lip0（X^a,E）→lip0（Y^a,F）satisfying that ｜｜Tf（y）｜｜F｜｜Tg（y）｜｜F= 0 for all y ∈ Y if and only if ｜｜f（x）｜｜E｜｜g（x）｜｜E=0 for all x E X, is a weighted composition operator of the form Tf（y） = h（y）（f（φ（y）））, where φ is a homeomorphism from Y onto X and h is a map from Y into the set of all linear bijections from E onto F. Moreover, T is continuous if and only if h（y） is continuous for all y ∈ Y. In this case, φ becomes a locally Lipschitz homeomorphism and h a locally Lipschitz map from Y^a into the space of all continuous linear bijections from E onto F with the metric induced by the operator canonical norm. This enables us to study the automatic continuity of T and the existence of discontinuous linear biseparating maps.

Efficient removal of the recalcitrant metamizole contaminant from drinking water by using a CaLaCoO_(9) perovskite supported on recycled polyethylene

Metamizole(MZ)is a widely used anti-inflammatory *** to its common use,this contaminant is found in sewage and *** order to reduce the contamination produced by the MZ,we fabricated in this work a photocatalytic composite using recycled polyethylene(RPE)and the CaLaCoO_(9)(LCCO)*** nanoparticles had a microplate-like morphology and sizes of 1.4–5.5μm according to the analysis of *** photocatalytic properties of the LCCO powders were evaluated under ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)irradiation and found a removal efficiency of 96%.When the RPE+LCCO composite was employed for the photocatalytic degradation of MZ,a maximum degradation of 92.5%was *** influence of the pH on the photocatalytic activity was also studied and found that an initial pH=3 produced a total degradation of MZ after 240 min of UV-Vis ***,three reuse cycles were carried out for the pure LCCO powders and for the RPE+LCCO composites and found that the maximum loss of degradation was 5%.Furthermore,scavenger experiments demonstrated that the super oxide and hydroxyl radicals are formed during the photocatalytic reaction and were responsible for the degradation of ***,the X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy and Raman analysis demonstrated the formation of defects(oxygen vacancies),those ones delayed the electron-hole recombination,which in turn,enhanced the degradation of the ***,the studies performed in this work proved that composites made with recycled plastics and LCCO perovskites are a low-cost and feasible alternative for the cleaning of water sources polluted with pharmaceutical compounds.

Assessment of potential impacts to surface and subsurface water bodies due to longwall mining

Ground movements due to longwall mining operations have the potential to damage the hydrological balance within as well as outside the mine permit area in the form of increased surface ponding and changes to hydrogeological properties. Recently, the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement(OSMRE) in the USA, has completed a public comment period on a newly proposed rule for the protection of streams and groundwater from adverse impacts of surface and underground mining operations(80 FR 44435). With increased community and regulatory focus on mining operations and their potential to adversely affect streams and groundwater, now there is a greater need for better prediction of the possible effects mining has on both surface and subsurface bodies of water. With mining induced stress and strain within the overburden correlated to changes in the hydrogeological properties of rock and soil, this paper investigates the evaluation of the hydrogeological system within the vicinity of an underground mining operation based on strain values calculated through a surface deformation prediction model. Through accurate modeling of the pre- and post-mining hydrogeological system, industry personnel can better depict mining induced effects on surface and subsurface bodies of water aiding in the optimization of underground extraction sequences while maintaining the integrity of water resources.
