Resistance to clarithromycin and gastroenterologist's persistence roles in nomination for Helicobacter pylori as high priority pathogen by World Health Organization

Due to the increasing prevalence of clarithromycin resistance, future of management of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infections need to be recognized. To now, clarithromycin was the best effective, well-tolerated and safe antibiotic used in treatment of the bacterium, but, increasing trend of resistance reduced efficacy of recommended regimens. Indeed, gastroenterologists are mostly unable to start appropriate therapyaccording to the sensitivity profile-due to the certain difficulties in routine H. pylori culture procedure and being time consuming method. This announcement by World Health Organization(WHO) was an onset to reconsider current challenging dilemma about H. pylori clarithromycin resistant isolates. Therefore, investigating of various factors affecting this nomination by WHO is highly welcomed. In fact, WHO enumerated more than 16 pathogens which seriously threats human life and public health, thus better management or effective guidelines are necessary. Here for the first time, we nominated this phenomenon as ‘‘gastroenterologist's persistence'' which should be equally investigated as antibiotic resistance. The ability of gastroenterologists to win the game against H. pylori infections is highly influenced by their collaboration with diagnostic laboratories to apply susceptibility patterns before any prescription. In conclusion, closer collaboration between two important partners(gastroenterologists and microbiologists) in management of H. pylori infection may hopefully trigger an era to remedy current crisis in clarithromycin resistance, a later gastric cancer can be practically preventable.

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Polypropylene Reinforced with Almond Shells Particles： Impact of Chemical Treatments

Polypropylene （PP） matrix composites reinforced with chemically treated Almond Shell （AS） particles with and without compatibilizer （PP-g-MA） was prepared by a twin-screw extrusion at loading of 20 wt.% AS particles. Two types of chemical treatments （alkali treatment with sodium hydroxide and etherification with dodecane bromide） of the particles were carried out to improve the interface adhesion between particles and PP matrix. Results show that chemical modifications of AS particles affect the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of AS/PP composites. The composites reinforced with alkali treated particles and the compatibilized matrix lead to a notable increase in the Young＇s modulus （14%） compared to the composites with untreated AS particles. The ductility of composite was also evaluated by the yield strain, and results show a notable increase （31%） compared to that of composites with untreated particles. The thermal stability increased with the use of etherification （385 ℃）, with gains in the temperature up to 23 ℃ compared to neat PP （362 ℃）. The achieved results show that the AS/PP composites can be used in several applications. A thermoplastic matrix compsite mixed with treated AS particles appears to be a good alternative to obtain environmentally friendly products.

Quantum photodetachment of hydrogen negative ion in a harmonic potential subjected to static electric field

Photodetachment of negative ions has attracted immense interest owing to its fundamental nature and practical implications with regard to technology. In this study, we explore the quantum dynamics of the photodetachment cross section of negative ion of hydrogen H-in the perturbed one dimensional linear harmonic potential via static electric field. To this end,the quantum formula for total photodetachment cross section of the H-ion is derived by calculating the dipole matrix element in spherical coordinates. In order to obtain the detached electron wave function, we have solved the time-independent Schr¨odinger wave equation for the perturbed Hamiltonian of the harmonic oscillator in momentum representation. To acquire the corresponding normalized final state detached electron wave function in momentum space, we have employed an approach analogous to the WKB(Wenzel–Kramers–Brillouin) approximation. The resulting analytical formula of total photodetachment cross section depicts interesting oscillator structure that varies considerably with incident-photon energy,oscillator potential frequency, and electric field strength as elucidated by the numerical results. The current problem having close analogy with the Stark effect in charged harmonic oscillator may have potential implications in atomic and molecular physics and quantum optics.

Contribution of tuned liquid column gas dampers to the performance of offshore wind turbines under wind, wave, and seismic excitations

The main intention of the present study is to reduce wind, wave, and seismic induced vibrations of jacket- type offshore wind turbines （JOWTs） through a newly developed vibration absorber, called tuned liquid column gas damper （TLCGD）. Using a Simulink-based model, an analytical model is developed to simulate global behavior of JOWTs under different dynamic excitations. The study is followed by a parametric study to explore efficiency of the TLCGD in terms of nacelle acceleration reduction under wind, wave, and earthquake loads. Study results indicate that optimum frequency of the TLCGD is rather insensitive to excitation type. In addition, while the gain in vibration control from TLCGDs with higher mass ratios is generally more pronounced, heavy TLCGDs are more sensitive to their tuned frequency such that ill-regulated TLCGD with high mass ratio can lead to destructive results. It is revealed that a well regulated TLCGD has noticeable contribution to the dynamic response of the JOWT under any excitation.

Use of clay as a pozzolona in high strength Portland cement and its thermal activation

In this investigation local clay from Cherat mines, Nowshera District, NWFP, Pakistan, has been tested as a pozzolanic material in high strength Portland cement. Thermal treatments were performed as a means of activation of the clay. It was found that thermal treatment of the clay can increase its pozzolanic activity. Different blended mortars, containing different amounts of clay, activated at different temperatures were studied for compressive strength, consistency, and setting times. It was concluded that the mechanical properties of the blended cements were mainly governed by the percentage of incorporation of the calcined clay. Blended cement composition has been for-mulated, with optimal results of 20% calcined clay at a temperature of 600℃.

The purpose of active distribution networks(ADNs)is to provide effective control approaches for enhancing the operation of distribution networks(DNs)and greater accommodation of distributed generation(DG)*** the integration of DG sources into DNs,several operational problems have drawn attention such as overvoltage and power flow alteration *** problems can be dealt with by utilizing distribution network reconfiguration(DNR)and soft open points(SOPs).An SOP is a power electronic device capable of accurately controlling active and reactive power *** significant aspect often overlooked is the coordination of protection devices needed to keep the network safe from *** implementing DNR and SOPs in real DNs,protection constraints must be *** paper presents an ADN reconfiguration approach that includes DG sources,SOPs,and protection *** approach selects the ideal configuration,DG output,and SOP placement and control by employing particle swarm optimization(PSO)to minimize power loss while ensuring the correct operation of protection devices under normal and fault *** proposed approach explicitly formulates constraints on network operation,protection coordination,DG size,and SOP ***,the proposed approach is evaluated using the standard IEEE 33-bus and IEEE 69-bus networks to demonstrate the validity.

Continuous melt granulation to develop high drug loaded sustained release tablet of Metformin HCl

The present work explores the application of melt granulation technology to develop a high drug loaded sustained release matrix tablet of Metformin HCl using hydroxypropylcellulose(HPC) as a hydrophilic binder and stearic acid as an extrusion aid for producing cohesive granules. This novel approach allowed the use of a minimum number of excipients to reduce the tablet size, and to enhance compressibility of the drug. This also offered a cost effective method owing to the elimination of a ‘drying step’ prevalent in wet granulation ***, this research also focuses on resolving the processability issues associated with the use of HPC Nisso-H at high drug loading. The thermal lubricants were screened for this purpose and evaluated for their impact on extrudability, granule and tablet characteristics. Stearic acid was selected as the thermal lubricant, which not only contributed to the inhibition of burst release, but also improved the flow property of the *** developed matrix tablet(75% drug loading) resulted in 670 mg of weight for 500 mg dose strength and showed sustained drug release over 10 h. When compared, with conventional granulation techniques, it was observed that, under identical compression force, the tablet prepared by MG exhibited superior compactibility along with tablet hardness and optimal drug release profile. FTIR suggested nonexistence of chemical interaction between the drug and the other excipients while XRD and DSC analysis revealed the crystalline state of the ***, the results obtained from Raman spectroscopy proved the uniform distribution of the Metformin HCl and polymer in the final dosage form. This technology leads to the manufacture of sustained release matrix formulation with reduced tablet size of a high dose,highly water soluble drug otherwise difficult to process using standard batch-granulation.

Analysis of stress and failure in rock specimens with closed and open flaws on the surface

The influence of closed and open surface flaws on the stress distribution and failure in rock specimens is *** finite element models are developed to simulate the compression tests on flawed rock *** simulated specimens include those with closed flaws and those with open flaws on the *** analyses are conducted to investigate the influences of the flaw inclination,friction coefficient and the confining stress on failure *** results show significant differences in the stress,displacement,and failure behavior of the closed and open flaws when they are subjected to pure compression;however,their behaviors under shear and tensile loads are *** to the results,when compression is the dominant mode of stress applied to the flaw surface,an open flaw may play a destressing role in the rock and relocate the stress concentration and failure *** presented results in this article suggest that failure at the rock surface may be managed in a favorable manner by fabricating open flaws on the rock *** insights gained from this research can be helpful in managing failure at the boundaries of rock structures.

Relative performance of novel blast wave mitigation system to conventional system based on mitigation percent criteria

Recent researches focused on developing robust blast load mitigation systems due to the threats of terrorist *** of the main embraced strategies is the structural systems that use mitigation *** are developed from a combination of structural elements and described herein as conventional *** the promising techniques is that redirect the waves propagation through hollow *** blast wave propagation through tubes provides an efficient system since it combines many blast wave phenomena,such as reflection,diffraction,and *** this research,a novel blast load mitigation system,employed as a protection fence,is developed using a technique similar to the technique of the bent tube in manipulating the *** relative performance of the novel system to the conventional system is evaluated based on mitigation percent *** of both systems are calculated through numerical *** proposed novel system proved to satisfy high performance in mitigating the generated blast waves from charges weight up to 500 kg TNT at relatively small standoff distances(5 m and 8 m).It mitigates at least 94%of the blast waves,which means that only 6%of that blast impulse is considered as the applied load on the targeted structure.

Using transverse steps is one of the adopted strategies to improve the hydrodynamic characteristics of planing *** the present paper,hydrodynamic characteristics of stepped planing crafts are numerically *** this purpose,we analyzed the effects of five different types of transverse steps on lift to drag ratio,resistance,trim angle and sinkage of high speed planing *** of pressure distribution on the bottom of crafts,water volume fraction and free-surface are also presented at different hull *** numerical results are properly validated against our conducted towing tank experimental tests.
