Changes in the Food Web Linked to Restoration Effort Intensity and Watershed Conditions

Many tidal wetland restoration projects have focused on changes in vegetation or avian communities to determine whether restoration efforts have been successful. However, a functioning restored ecosystem relies on complex interactions among organisms on every level of the food web. In 2008, more than 223 hectares (ha) of former dairy ranch were restored to tidal wetland in Tomales bay, California. To evaluate changes, we monitored zooplankton, benthic invertebrate, and fish communities before and after restoration in the Project Area and several natural marshes. Zooplankton and benthic invertebrate communities differed from natural marshes prior to restoration, but began to converge with natural marshes after restoration in terms of species composition, richness, and diversity. Fish communities in the Project Area remained distinct from those of natural marshes after restoration, although abundance of non-native species decreased. In past studies, fish communities have changed more quickly than invertebrate ones. The divergent evolutionary path taken by this system may stem from differences in restoration approach. This project did not involve extensive excavation or fill with dredge spoil material, and this minimalistic approach may promote more rapid colonization by invertebrates, especially if source populations exist nearby. While convergence with natural marshes was an objective, rapid colonization may not be beneficial in this instance as natural marshes have turned out to be dominated by non-native, opportunistic invertebrate species. Ultimately, success of restoration projects may be determined by factors extrinsic to the project itself such as climatic variability and prevalence of invasive species within watersheds.

Paclitaxel （PTX）, one of the most effective cytotoxins for the treatment of breast and lung cancer, is limited by its severe side effects and low tumor selectivity. In this work hollow-poly（4-vinylpyridine）（hollow-p4VP） nanoparticles （NPs） have been used for the first time to generate PTX@p4VP NPs, employing a novel technique in which a gold core in the center of the NP is further oxidized to produce the hollow structure into which PTX molecules can be incorporated. The hollow-p4VP NPs exhibit good physicochemical properties and displayed excellent biocompatibility when tested on blood （no hemolysis） and cell cultures （no cytotoxicity）. Interestingly, PTX@p4VP NPs significantly increased PTX cytotoxicity in human lung （A-549） and breast （MCF-7） cancer cells with a significant reduction of PTX ICs0 （from 5.9 to 3.6 nM in A-549 and from 13.75 to 4.71 nM in MCF-7）. In addition, PTX@p4VP caused a decrease in volume of A-549 and MCF-7 multicellular tumor spheroids （MTS）, an in vitro system that mimics in vivo tumors, in comparison to free PTX. This increased antitumoral activity is accompanied by efficient cell internalization and increased apoptosis, especially in lung cancer MTS. Our results offer the first evidence that hollow- p4VP NPs can improve the antitumoral activity of PTX. This system can be used as a new nanoplatform to overcome the limitations of current breast and lung cancer treatments.

近年来,当谈到对学习外语的兴趣时,很容易看到趋势的动态变化。开设与东方语言相关的不同类型专业的波兰学校、大学和其他教育机构的数量逐年增加。其中最流行的语言是中文。本文旨在探讨波兰教师在汉语教学过程中所面临的问题。首先介绍了波兰汉语教学的历史背景,以及该国汉语教育的现状。其次,探讨了汉语教学中存在的问题和难点,以教学方法的选择、教材和教学大纲的选择等方面为主。通过问卷调查和面对面访谈,观察到在波兰有效教授汉语的主要障碍是学生的心态、考试制度、波兰教师的教学策略和能力以及学习环境。在文章的最后部分,提出了一些教学建议,并提出了改善波兰汉语教学状况的各种方法。其中包括以学生为中心的教学方法的指导,创造有利的汉语学习环境,并提供良好的设备和教材。

服务质量和客户满意度是各行业均关注的焦点领域。服务质量不佳及不愉快的客户体验可能会导致企业破产。今天的商业世界,服务创新己成为制造业和服务业的必然选择,而毫无疑问在所有行业中,酒店业对服务的关注度最高。酒店不断地寻求新思路和方法以改进其服务,从而增强客户的忠诚度以增长效益。目前许多酒店期望采用创新服务模式增加和增强服务以巩固稳定的服务交付,从而确保超越竞争对手。为了满足客户需求,并在同一时间评估自身的成长和服务提供能力,酒店连续重新在他们的标准和服务级别上加强管理,并进行相应地调整。为了让行业内的机构在充分地提供满足客户所需服务的同时能够有依据地评价自身服务质量和能力,酒店行业一直在持续完善行业标准和服务等级管理体系。本文在酒店业中服务的概念、创新和服务模式创新内容的理论前提下,结合东北大学国际交流中心(NEU International Hotel)的具体实施操作情况,讨论其服务模式设定、创新目标定位及其执行现状。本文主要分为六个部分。第一部分介绍了研究的背景、思路、意义与方法。第二部分中对所用理论进行了介绍,包括服务模式及其创新的概念和特点、Den Hertog的四维服务创新模型理论等。第三部分以东北大学国际交流中心(NEU International Hotel)为例,分析该酒店前厅、客房与餐饮部门的服务现状以及存在的局限性,总结了该酒店存在的几大问题——服务理念落后、服务产品同质化、各部门之间协调性不足以及客户服务管理比较落后等。第四部分中基于东北大学国际交流中心(NEU International Hotel)的服务模式现状,根据服务创新思维模型探讨其服务模式创新的目标与方向并提出相应的创新策略。第五部分针对服务创新在实行中有可能遇到的阻碍进行了保障性措施介绍与分析。最后,本文对东北大学国际交流中心(NEU International Hotel)以及整个酒店业的服务模式创新发展做出了总结和未来展望。

Italian Validation of the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ)

The Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) is a scale which measures aspects of the oral health-related quality of life. However, no Italian version of PIDAQ has been developed. The aim of this study was to translate the original English version of PIDAQ into Italian and to assess the validity and reliability of the Italian version for application among Italian adults. The questionnaire was translated into Italian, back translated, pre-tested, and cross-culturally adapted. Subsequently, the Italian version of PIDAQ and the Oral health impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) were administered to 264 orthodontic patients aged from 18 to 83 years old, mean age was (38.39 + 16.9) belonging to Southern Italy. Cronbach’s alpha of the translated PIDAQ was 0.82, corrected item-total correlation ranged from 0.48 to 0.67. The 23 items of PIDAQ were divided into four domains. There was a logical relation among the items in the same domain and a highly significant association among scores of PIDAQ and the other scale. The translated Italian version of PIDAQ demonstrated good reliability and validity. Its sufficient discriminative and evaluative psycho-metric properties provide the theoretical evidence for further use in study on orthodontic-specific aspects of quality of life among Italian adults.

bee pollen is currently one of the most widely consumed dietary supplements due to its high nutritional value and its potentially beneficial effects on health. Unfortunately, in recent years an increase in the fraudulent marketing of this product has been detected, mainly in terms of adulteration with pollen from other sources. This has made it necessary to seek new tools to ensure its authentication. Therefore, this study investigates the use of free amino acids as markers of the geographical origin and harvesting period of bee pollen. To demonstrate their potential as biomarkers, 72 samples from four apiaries (Pistacho, Tío Natalio, Monte and Fuentelahiguera), located in the same geographical area (Marchamalo, Guadalajara, Spain), were analyzed by liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection, with the data obtained undergoing canonical discriminant analysis. Variable amounts and numbers of free amino acids were found in the samples analyzed;proline predominated in all of them, in a concentration range of 298–569989 mg/kg. The differences observed in amino acid composition could be attributed to the flowering plants from which the bee pollen samples originated. In addition, it was possible to statistically assign over 75% of the samples to the corresponding apiary of origin, the best results being obtained for the Fuentelahiguera and Tío Natalio apiaries (100%);this classification was even superior in the case of the harvesting periods, as more than 90% of the samples were correctly assigned, and in one period (June) a 100% rate was obtained.

Atrial fibrillation(AF) is the most commonly encountered clinical arrhythmia associated with pronounced mortality and morbidity, which are related to palpitations, fainting, congestive heart failure, and stroke. Prolonged episodes of AF promote AF persistence mainly due to electrical remodelling that alters ion-channel expression and/or function. Micro RNAs(mi RNAs), a new class of noncoding mR NAs of around 22 nucleotides in length, have recently emerged as one of the key players in the geneexpression regulatory networks. The potential roles of miR NAs in controlling AF have recently been investigated. Several recent studies have provided promising results for a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of AF. In this review, we summarize the mechanism of miR NAs as regulators of ion-channel gene expression and their role in causing AF through electrical remodelling.

Polypyrrole Coated PET Fabrics for Thermal Applications

Polypyrrole can be chemically synthesized on PET fabrics, giving rise to textiles with high electric conductivity. These textiles are suitable for several applications from antistatic films to electromagnetic interference shielding devices. Here we discuss the thermal-electric performance and the heat generation of polypyrrole coated PET fabric samples, previously studied because of their electric conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness. The measured Seebeck effect is comparable with that of metallic thermocouples. Since polypyrrole shows extremely low thermal diffusivities regardless of the electrical conductivity, the low thermal conductivity gives significant advantage to the thermoelectric figure-of-merit ZT, comparable with that of some traditional inorganic thermoelectric materials. The heat generation is also investigated for possible heating textile devices. The results confirm polypyrrole as a prom- ising material for thermal electric applications due to its easy preparation in low cost processing.
