Thyroid Cartilage Chondrosarcoma Review: Management and Prognosis of a Rare Tumor

Objective: This article is a critical review of the literature concerning thyroid cartilage chondrosarcoma and is particularly focused on the management and prognosis of this rare entity. Study Design: A review of all the cases of thyroid cartilage chondrosarcoma reported in the literature up to January 2013. Methods: The search was carried out through the introduction of the MeSH terms: Chondrosarcoma, Laryngeal Cartilages, Thyroid Cartilage, Therapeutics. All the studies related to thyroid cartilage chondrosarcoma were selected together with a newly presented case. Results: A total of 47 cases have been described in the literature, and 35 of these include sufficient data for statistical analysis. The age of patients ranged from 40 to 77 years, with a male predilection (88.6%). The main symptoms were neck mass and hoarseness. Grade I and II tumors were most frequent. A total of 13 cases described an extension of the tumor beyond the thyroid cartilage. The most common treatment was partial laryngectomy (50%). All patients who died were male, with grade II or II-III tumor or associated sarcoma, had metastases and received radiotherapy in addition to total laryngectomy. Conclusion: Patient age and tumor size does not influence the prognosis. Tumor grade I and I-II have good prognoses, whereas the prognosis is unpredictable in tumors between grade II and III. Patients with associated sarcoma, or metastasis, have a worse prognosis. Partial laryngectomy is a good therapeutic option, although total laryngectomy is sometimes required in order to ensure complete resection.

Vascular Loops and neuro-Otologic Symptoms: Is There Any Correlation?

Objective: To determine the relationship between vascular loops in the internal auditory canal and otologic symptoms. Methods: We performed a retrospective study, with a systematic review of the literature and analyzed the magnetic resonances imaging (MRI) of 91 patients attended in the EnT department since April to June 2013, in order to correlate radiological findings with otologic symptoms. Results: Vascular loops were seen in the internal auditory canal of patients without clinical symptoms;however an association was found between the presence of vascular compression of the eighth nerve displayed on MRI and the presence of sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus. no association was found between vertigo and vascular loops. Conclusion: The presence of vascular loops in the internal auditory canal may be an incidental finding in MRIs of patients without clinical symptoms. However, in patients with tinnitus or sensorineural hearing loss that is unexplained by other clinical pathologies, these may be correlated with the existence of vascular loops which compress the eighth cranial nerve or contact the bone wall of the internal auditory canal. Further studies involving a larger number of patients are required to accurately evaluate the association between these symptoms and vascular loops.

The decomposition and CO2 reforming of methane,respectively,are promising alternatives to industrial steam methane reforming. In recent years,research has been focused on the development of catalysts that can operate without getting deactivated by carbon deposition,where,in particular,carbon catalysts have shown positive results. In this work,the role of carbon materials in heterogeneous catalysis is assessed and publications on methane decomposition and CO2 reforming of methane over carbon materials are reviewed. The influence of textural properties(BET surface area and micropore volume,etc.) and oxygen surface groups on the catalytic activity of carbon materials are discussed. In addition,this review examines how activated carbon and carbon black catalysts,which are the most commonly used carbon catalysts,are deactivated. Characteristics of the carbon deposits from methane are discussed and the influence of the reactivity to CO2 of fresh carbon and carbonaceous deposits for high and steady conversion during CO2 reforming of CH4 are also considered.

We present a new approach for calculating the C-factor of RUSLE considering the effect of low-reflectance vegetation cover areas on the reduction of the effects on erosion caused by rainfall *** this,we propose the coefficients Cr2(rescaled 2)and C-PC(Precipitation Correction),which represent the Cfactor,and an adaptation in nDVI calculation,according to the seasonality of precipitation(nDVI-PC).The Cr2 factor is used when there is no seasonal effect of rainfall on vegetation,while the C-PC factor is calculated for localities under the influence of seasonality,from *** proposed approaches were tested using different satellites images in the Palmares-Ribeir~ao do Saco watershed,Rio de Janeiro,*** values of Cr2 and C-PC factors were compared to the Cr factor(rescaled)and to mean values from the literature for different land *** results indicated that the Cr2 factor represents an improvement in accuracy in relation to Cr by considering specific values of the studied area to normalize the data without ***,the C-PC factor is able to simulate the effect of seasonality,providing more realistics values of soil loss by the RUSLE as a function of the proportion of area affected by the rainfall seasonality obtained from *** conclude that both Cr2 and C-PC factors generate values similar of the C-factor observed in the literature,and therefore are able to provide better soil loss estimation than that using the Cr factor.

The use of steel-making slag as catalysts for microwave-assisted dry reforming of CH4 was studied. Two carbon materials (an activated carbon and a metallurgical coke), mixtures of the carbon materials and Fe-rich slag, and mixtures of the carbon materials and ni/Al2O3 were tested as catalysts. The mixtures of slag with carbons gave rise to higher and steadier conversions than those achieved over the carbon materials alone. In addition, the use of the metallurgical coke mixed with metal-rich catalysts gave rise to remarkable results. Thus, no CH4 and CO2 conversions were achieved when coke was used alone, whereas high conversions were obtained when it was mixed with the metal-rich catalysts.
