Influence of Quince Rootstocks on Entomosporium Leaf Spot （Entomosporium mespili） Susceptibility in European Pear cv. Abate Fetel

Entomosporium leaf spot （ELS） is caused by the fungus Fabraea maculata （anamorph： Entomosporium mespili） and affects most pear cultivars and quince rootstocks in Brazil. The aim of this study was to characterize the effect of Adams, EMA and EMC quince rootstocks on ELS in European pear cultivar ＂Abate Fetel＂ in Southern Brazil, during the 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 growing season. The incidence and severity of disease was quantified weekly in 100 randomly leaves distributed in four medium-height branches per plant with eight replications. Disease progress curves of ELS were constructed and the epidemics compared according to：（1） the beginning of symptoms appearance （BSA）; （2） the time to reach the maximum disease incidence and severity （TRMDI and TRMDS）; （3） area under the incidence and severity disease progress curve （AUIDPC and AUSDPC）. The data were analyzed by linear regression and adjusted for three empirical models： Logistic, Monomolecular and Gompertz. The Abate Fetel cultivar under all rootstocks evaluated was susceptible to E. mespili. However, there were significant differences in ELS intensity among rootstocks evaluated. The highest ELS intensities were observed in combinations with EMA and Adams quince rootstock. Abate Fetel cultivar grafted on EMC quince rootstock showed all epidemiological variables results significantly different when compared with EMA quince rootstock. EMC quince rootstock induced late resistance compared with the other considerated rootstocks. The Logistic model was the most appropriates to describe the ELS progress of Abate Fetel cultivar under all rootstocks evaluated in the edafoclimatic conditions of Southern Brazil, during the 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 growing season.

The pandemic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection has garnered the attention of scientists worldwide in the search for an effective treatment while also focusing on vaccine *** drugs have been used for the management of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),which has affected many hospitals and health centers *** significant results are lacking on the effectiveness of the experimented drugs in reducing COVID-19 morbidity or mortality,as there are very few published randomized clinical *** this,the literature offers some material for study and *** opinion review attempts to address three burning questions on COVID-19 treatment options.(1)What kind of studies are currently published or ongoing in the treatment of patients with COVID-19?(2)What drugs are currently described in the literature as options of treatment for patients affected by the infection?And(3)Are there specific clinical manifestations related to COVID-19 that can be treated with a customized and targeted therapy?By answering these questions,we wish to create a summary of current COVID-19 treatments and the anti-COVID-19 treatments proposed in the recent clinical trials developed in the last 3 mo,and to describe examples of clinical manifestations of the SARS-CoV-2 infection with a cause-related treatment.

BACKGROUND Pneumonia is the main manifestation of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)*** computed tomography is recommended for the initial evaluation of the disease;this technique can also be helpful to monitor the disease progression and evaluate the therapeutic *** To review the currently available literature regarding the radiological follow-up of COVID-19-related lung alterations using the computed tomography scan,to describe the evidence about the dynamic evolution of COVID-19 pneumonia and verify the potential usefulness of the radiological *** We used pertinent keywords on PubMed to select relevant studies;the articles we considered were published until October 30,*** this selection,69 studies were identified,and 16 were finally included in the *** Summarizing the included works’findings,we identified well-defined stages in the short follow-up time frame.A radiographic deterioration reaching a peak roughly within the first 2 wk;after the peak,an absorption process and repairing signs are *** later radiological follow-up,with the limitation of little evidence available,the lesions usually did not recover *** Following computed tomography scan evolution over time could help physicians better understand the clinical impact of COVID-19 pneumonia and manage the possible sequelae;a longer follow-up is advisable to verify the complete resolution or the presence of long-term damage.

Occurrence of Nanobacteria-Like Particles in Renal Stones of a Southern Brazilian Population

Purpose: Identifying the source of stone formation in recurrent stone formers has always been a big problem. Material and Methods: In this study kidney stones from 52 patients were submitted to direct examination by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) after manual fracture and 27 calculi were cultured in Eagle’s Minimum Essential Medium (E-MEM) and Brain-Heart Infusion (BHI) for eight weeks at 37°C in 5% CO2 atmosphere. Twenty-seven powdered and demineralized stones were suspended in sterile PBS, filtered through 0.22 m-pore-size sterile filters Millex (Millipore, Massachusetts, USA) and submitted to DNA extraction (Quiagen-Brazil). Platinum PCR SuperMIX (GIBCO-BRL), primers (Invitrogen), and Ultra Pure Water (Advanced Biotechnologies, Columbia, MD) were used for PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), which was generally conducted for 30 or 35 cycles with annealing of primers for 40 sec at 55°C and extension for 1 min at 72°C. Results: In 36 out 52 (69%) kidney stones it was detected the presence of biofilm coating the mineral surface of the stone when examined by SEM, consisting of coccoid particles, isolated or clustered, with diameter of 500 nm or less. Eleven out 27 (41%) kidney stone cultures produced white-colored sediment on the bottom of the tubes after eight-week incubation, revealing tiny structures similar to those observed directly by SEM. These structures were similar in size and morphology to spherical apatite particles previously observed in human kidney stones and named as nanobacteria (NB). No PCR products were observed in the samples. Conclusion: We found a strong correlation between renal stones and calcifying nanoparticles (CNP) in this study and these results open a new insight on this area to explore the etiology of stone formation. Whether NB/CNP are truly microorganisms or self-propagating mineral compounds is still controversial and its contribution, if any, in apatite nucleation and crystal growth remains uncertain.

Gas Exchange and Production of Photosynthetic Pigments of <i>Piper aduncum</i>L. Grown at Different Irradiances

The species Piper aduncum is a plant with great economic potential, because the essential oil has antimicrobial activity and insecticides. Thus, as the light directly affects photosynthesis process, the present study evaluated the gas exchanges’ variables and photosynthetic pigments’ production of P. aduncum grown under different irradiances. Treatments consisted in environments with 100%, 70% and 50% of irradiance and environments with colored nets (red and blue). After 150 days of culture, photosynthetic activity (A), stomatal conductance (gs) transpiration rate (E), internal CO2 concentration (Ci), deficit vapor pressure (DVP), leaf temperature, concentration of internal/external CO2 (Ci/Ca), carboxylation efficiency (A/Ci) and efficiency water use (A/E) were evaluated. Pigments chlorophyll a, b, carotenoids, total and chlorophyll a/b ratio were also measured. From the observed data, it can be concluded that the species Piper aduncun developed various mechanisms for adaptation to different irradiance conditions. Moreover, it can be inferred that their photosynthetic process is more efficient and has larger spectral intensities of light, with higher efficiency photosynthetic when grown under 70% and 100% of radiation.

Background and objective: Cryoglobulinaemic neuropathy (CN) is probably common, as it is usually related to HCV infection. The aim of this study was to delineate the clinical spectrum of CN in a large series and to investigate the factors influencing its expression. Methods: Seventy one consecutive patients (12 men, 59 women), diagnosed as having CN on the basis of clinical features of neuropathy, clinical and serological findings of mixed cryoglobulinaemia, and exclusion criteria, were identified during a six year period. All patients underwent clinical examination, and electrophysiological and laboratory investigations. Results: Results of the patients with “pure”CN (n = 54) and those with comorbidities (n = 17) were evaluated separately. Of the former 76%had sensory neuropathy (including selective small fibre sensory neuropathy (SFSN) in 14 patients), 15%had sensorimotor polyneuropathy, and 9%had mononeuritis multiplex. The pattern of distribution was similar in the patients with comorbidities. In 30/54 patients, CN was the first manifestation of cryoglobulinaemia. Patients with mild cryoglobulinaemic syndrome had sensory neuropathy more frequently than patients with active syndrome (p < 0.001), in particular SFSN (p < 0.001). The latter group had more severe features, with significantly more cases of reduced or absent motor (p = 0.028) and sensory action potentials (p < 0.001), and a tendency towards higher Rankin scores (p = 0.06). Conclusions:Sensory neuropathy,often in the form of SFSN, is by far the commonest form of CN. Cryoglobulinaemia should be vigorously investigated in the diagnosis of sensory neuropathy, especially in older women. Activity of the cryoglobulinaemic syndrome is a major factor influencing the clinical expression and severity of CN.

Soil Physical Properties and Grain Yield Influenced by Cover Crops and Crop Rotation

The crop yield is related to several factors, among these, soil tillage, soil compaction and crop rotation. This study aimed to evaluate the winter cover crops and crop rotation influence on soil physical properties and grain yield of dry beans, maize and soybean for two growing seasons. Three experiments were conducted, corresponding to dry beans, maize and soybean crops. It was used the randomized block design with three treatments and four replications consisted by 3 × 10 m plots. The treatments were: two cover crops systems and crop rotation in no-till, and the control, consisting of winter fallow and conventional tillage. The cover crop dry matter, soil physical properties and grain yield for dry beans, maize and soybean in the two growing seasons were evaluated. Crop rotation systems and cover crops showed a trend to increase maize and soybean yields. Crop rotation in no-till increases soil compaction in the superficial layer compared to conventional tillage, but does not reduce the dry beans, maize and soybean yields.

AIM To evaluate the sex-specific effects of a hydroalcoholic extract from Eugenia punicifolia(HEEP) leaves on gastric ulcer *** In this rat study involving males, intact(cycling) females, and ovariectomized females, gastric ulcers were induced using acetic acid. A vehicle, lansoprazole, or HEEP was administered for 14 d after ulcer induction. Body weight was monitored throughout the treatment period. At the end of treatment, the rats were euthanized and the following in vivo and in vitro investigations were performed: macroscopic examination of the lesion area and organ weights, biochemical analysis, zymography, and evaluation of protein expression levels. Additionally, the concentration-dependent effect of HEEP was evaluated in terms of subacute toxicity and *** Compared to the vehicle, HEEP demonstrated a great healing capacity by substantially reducing the ulcerative lesion area in males(52.44%), intact females(85.22%), and ovariectomized females(65.47%), confirming that HEEP accelerates the healing of acetic acidinduced gastric lesions and suggesting that this effect is modulated by female sex hormones. The antiulcer effect of HEEP was mediated by prostaglandin E2 only in male rats. Overall, the beneficial effect of HEEP was the highest in intact females. Notably, HEEP promoted the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(intact vs ovariectomized females) and decreased the expression of Caspase-8 and Bcl-2(intact female vs male or ovariectomized female). Additionally, HEEP enhanced fibroblast proliferation and migration into a wounded area in vitro, confirming its healing effect.
