AIM: To study the mechanism of antimigraine activity of Tanacetum parthenium ( Feverfew), its extracts and parthenolide, a component of Feverfew, by observing their effect on 5-HT storage and release, and stimulation of 5-HT2B and 5-HT2A receptors. Also to standardize a dosage form of Feverfew with respect to its parthenolide content. METHODS: Isometric responses to 5-HT and an indirect acting serotonergic, d-fenfluramine, were obtained on rat fundus and ileum. In one set of experiments the effect of dichloromethane extract of Feverfew and parthenolide was observed on the above. The extract was then thermally degraded upto 10 %, 23 %, and 33 % with respect to its parthenolide content by keeping at 60℃ and 75 % relative humidity and the experiments were repeated. In another set of experiments rats were fed with 20 mg/kg Feverfew powder (equivalent to a human dose of 500 μg parthenolide per day) for 30 d or were ip injected with parthenolide (23.4 μg/day) for 7 d. An 18 years old female patient was given a test dose of Benzyl penicillin in the Antecubital Area on the right forearm by a staff nurse of the department. After the injection, the patient complained of severe pain in the right forearm distal to the injection site. This was followed by blanching of the right forearm and hand. She was immediately heparinised followed by other symptomatic treatments. After 12 hours, a bluish discoloration developed on the hand, both on dorsal and palmar aspect, sparing the thumb. This recovered with medication, except the late development of dry gangrene of the tip of distal phalanx of the little finger which got shrivelled later on. Color Doppler flow study, echocardiography, and CT angiography of the right upper limb were done. Understanding of the pathogenesis and prompt action can help in saving a limb. Education of the medical professionals involved in administering injection is necessary so that they become aware of abnormal course or anomalous anatomy of vessels of upper limb. This can help to prevent the complications.

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic debilitating disease of huge economic importance due to loss in production, morbidity and mortality, and has a potential zoonotic threat. TB is endemic in India and has a worldwide prevalence, therefore, needing early diagnostic technique for the eradication of TB globally. Currently, compared to the eradication programme of TB in Medical sector, Veterinary sector is lagging behind though TB is one of the major zoonotic diseases prevalent in dairy animals and wildlife in India. With the “End TB” strategy by WHO in human, parallel measures for early diagnosis and culling has to be followed in case of animals for an overall successful eradication programme. The objective of this study is diagnosis of TB in cattle and buffaloes by using the cell-mediated immune response tests, i.e. Comparative Intradermal Tuberculin Test (CITT) and Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) assay, and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) targeting esxB gene (CFP-10 protein) and to compare their diagnostic capabilities. This study was carried out in 202 dairy cattle and buffaloes from an organized dairy farm, where almost all of the animals appeared clinically healthy. We found that, the combined use of both CITT and IFN-γ assay lead to more accurate diagnosis of TB, although IFN-γ assay was more specific than CITT. However, esxB PCR showed almost similar sensitivity to IFN-γ assay and may be used as a fast alternative method for the diagnosis of bovine TB from blood samples.

Background: Prospective analysis of 500 cases of vaginal discharge in tertiary health centre of Punjab. Objective: To study the prevalence of Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in 500 outpatient of 15 - 49 years age group with vaginal discharge and to evaluate the various factors influencing pattern of STIs. Method: All cases were subjected to cervical cytology, HIV ELISA, rapid plasma reagen (RPR) test for syphilis and Gram’s staining, Giemsa staining and wet mount study of vaginal discharge. Results: Prevalence of STIs was found to be 58% and majority of infection was caused by G. vaginalis, Candida and Trichomonas. Pap smear showed koilocytosis in 5.6%, mild dysplasia in 1.8% and carcinoma cervix in 1.2% cases. Conclusion: Vaginal discharge is a common gynaecological complaint and STIs are significant cause of vaginal discharge.
