AIM: To compare the outcomes between the laparoscopic and open approaches for partial colectomy in elderly patients aged 65 years and over using the American College of Surgeons- national Surgical Quality Improvement Program(ACS nSQIP) database. METHODS: The ACS nSQIP database for the years 2005-2011 was queried for all patients 65 years and above who underwent partial colectomy. 1:1 propensity score matching using the nearest- neighbor method was performed to ensure both groups had similar preoperative comorbidities. Outcomes including postoperative complications, length of stay and mortality were compared between the laparoscopic and open groups. χ2 and Fisher's exact test were used for discrete variables and Student's t-test for continuous variables. P nsidered significant and odds ratios with 95%CI were reported when applicable. RESULTS: The total number of patients in the ACS nSQIP database of the years 2005-2011 was 1777035. We identified 27604 elderly patients who underwent partial colectomy with complete data sets. 12009(43%) of the cases were done laparoscopically and15595(57%) were done with open. After propensity score matching, there were 11008 patients each in the laparoscopic(LC) and open colectomy(OC) cohorts. The laparoscopic approach had lower post-operative complications(LC 15.2%, OC 23.8%, P ngth of stay(LC 6.61 d, OC 9.62 d, P nd lower mortality(LC 1.6%, OC 2.9%, P nCLUSIOn: Even after propensity score matching, elderly patients in the ACS nSQIP database having a laparoscopic partial colectomy had better outcomes than those having open colectomies. In the absence of specific contraindications, elderly patients requiring a partial colectomy should be offered the laparoscopic approach.

Automatic plant classification through plant leaf is a classical problem in Computer *** classification is challenging due to the introduction of new species with a similar pattern and *** efforts are made to automate plant classification using plant leaf,plant flower,bark,or *** much effort,it has been proven that leaf is the most reliable source for plant *** it is challenging to identify a plant with the help of leaf structure because plant leaf shows similarity in morphological variations,like sizes,textures,shapes,and ***,it is required to normalize all plant leaves into the same size to get better *** neural networks(Cnn)provides a fair amount of accuracy when leaves are classified using this *** the performance can be improved by classifying using the traditional approach after applying *** this paper,two approaches,namely Cnn+Support Vector Machine(SVM)and Cnn+K-nearest neighbors(knn)used on 3 datasets,namely LeafSnap dataset,Flavia Dataset,and MalayaKew *** datasets are augmented to take care all the *** assessments and correlations of the predetermined feature extractor models are ***+knn managed to reach maximum accuracy of 99.5%,97.4%,and 80.04%,respectively,in the three datasets.

Indian agriculture is striving to achieve sustainable intensification,the system aiming to increase agricultural yield per unit area without harming natural resources and the *** farming employs technology to improve *** and accurate analysis and diagnosis of plant disease is very helpful in reducing plant diseases and improving plant health and food crop *** disease experts are not available in remote areas thus there is a requirement of automatic low-cost,approachable and reliable solutions to identify the plant diseases without the laboratory inspection and expert’s *** learning-based computer vision techniques like Convolutional neural network(Cnn)and traditional machine learning-based image classification approaches are being applied to identify plant *** this paper,the Cnn model is proposed for the classification of rice and potato plant leaf *** leaves are diagnosed with bacterial blight,blast,brown spot and tungro *** leaf images are classified into three classes:healthy leaves,early blight and late blight *** leaf dataset with 5932 images and 1500 potato leaf images are used in the *** proposed Cnn model was able to learn hidden patterns from the raw images and classify rice images with 99.58%accuracy and potato leaves with 97.66%*** results demonstrate that the proposed Cnn model performed better when compared with other machine learning image classifiers such as Support Vector Machine(SVM),K-nearest neighbors(Knn),Decision Tree and Random Forest.

Using acoustic microscopy at higher frequency,we show the velocity evolutions of surface acoustic waves,in particular Rayleigh waves that depend on porosity for a mesoporous silicon *** velocities are obtained from different V(z) curves,which are determined experimentally at a frequency of *** analysis of V(z) data yields attenuation that is directly dependent on *** the other hand,αn attenuation has been modeled and allows us to investigate its influence on the velocity VR of the propagation for Rayleigh waves.

A study was done to determine the effect of best stacking sequence(position and orientation)on the mechanical properties,friction and wear response of hybrid *** main purpose of the study was to determine the best available stacking sequence for which the physical,mechanical and three body abrasive wear rate is *** for mechanical properties(tensile strength,flexural strength,inter laminar shear strength,impact strength and hardness)was done on glass-carbon hybrid *** composites were then subjected to test for three body abrasive wear on a designed experimental *** different factors(sliding velocity,fabric weight percentage,normal load,sliding distance and abrasive particle size)varied in steps to evaluate the friction and three body abrasive wear response of the *** design of experiment using Taguchi’s orthogonal array and analysis of variance(AnOVA)was applied to find out minimum specific wear *** results revealed the significance in arrangement of two different layers of fabric(glass and carbon)and the difference in properties obtained by *** Taguchi experimental analysis it has been observed that three body abrasive wear rate is minimum at 72 cm/s sliding velocity,30 wt.%fabric content,80 n normal load,90 m sliding distance and 125μm abrasive particle *** scanning electron microscope(SEM)studies revealed the dynamics of three‐body abrasive wear and underlying micro‐mechanisms that result in the analysis of three body abrasive wear.

Optical properties of cobalt ferrite(CoFe2O4) nanoparticles are modeled and simulated employing finite element analysis(FEA) and density functional theory(DFT) for different particle sizes. The simulated absorption maxima of electronic excitations is red-shifted from 330 nm to 410 nm using finite element analysis and from 331.27 nm to 409.07 nm using quantum mechanical method, with increasing particle sizes from 40 nm to 50 nm. The measured absorption maxima matched the simulated results reasonably well and red-shifted to longer wavelengths from 315.59 nm to 426.73 nm with the increase in particle sizes from 30 nm to 50 nm. The DFT simulated, FEA simulated and experimentally derived optical band gap energies, Eg, were also acquired and compared. The simulated Egvalues decreased from 3.228 to 2.478 e V and from 3.266 to 2.456 e V, while the experimental Egvalue decreased from 3.473 to 2.697 e V, with increasing the particle sizes. The research demonstrated that the optical absorption of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles can be described with high accuracy using the quantum mechanical interpretation based on DFT. FEA based simulations have shown limitations for smaller(nm) nanoparticles likely due to the increased surface scattering that prevented a stable solution for simulations beyond the quasistatic limit. The DFT computational tool developed by this study can enable both the low cost computation and highly reliable prediction of optical absorption properties and optical band edges, and thus contribute to understanding and design of CoFe2O4 nanoparticle properties prior to fabrication and functionalization of them, for a wide range of applications especially for sensing and photonic wave modulations.

AIM: To investigate the role of endothelial nitric oxide synthase-786 T > C promoter polymorphism in the etiology of gastric cancer(GC). METHODS: A total of 150 GC patients and 150 control subjects were included in the study. The information on demographic features was elicited with an informed consent from all the patients and control subjects using a structured questionnaire. Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infectivity status was tested in antral biopsies from all the subjects by rapid urease test following the method of Vaira et al. Genomic DnA was isolated from whole blood samples following the salting out method of Lahiri et al. Genotype analysis of the rs2070744 polymorphism was carried out by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction method. The genotypes were determined based on the appearance of bands on an agarose gel stained with ethidium bromide under ultraviolet gel documentation with the help of 100 bp ladder. Odds ratios and corresponding 95%CIs were determined using java stat online software. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the distribution of C allele(C vs T; P = 0.000, OR = 5.038) in patient group compared to the control subjects exhibiting a fivefold increased risk for GC. When the T/T and C/C genotypes were compared, there was an enhanced GC risk for individuals with C/C genotype(T/T vs C/C; P = 0.000). Among the demographic factors, smoking and alcoholism were the common risk factors in patients compared to the control subjects(P nts with smoking and alcoholism developed cancer even in heterozygous T/C condition(smoking: P = 0.020 and alcoholism: P = 0.005). Individuals with H. pylori infection showed seven fold increased risk for cancer. All the patients with C/C genotype revealed a significant association between H. pylori infection and GC. Among the patients 2.4% of them revealed familial incidence of GC. no significant difference was noticed between cases and controls with regard to consanguinity(P = 0.473).COnCLU
