(Q)SAR modelling of nanomaterial toxicity:A critical review

There is increasing recognition that some nanomaterials may pose a risk to human health and the environment. Moreover, the industrial use of the novel engineered nanomaterials （ENMs） increases at a higher rate than data generation for hazard assessment; consequently, many of them remain untested. The large number of nanomaterials and their variants （e.g., different sizes and coatings） requiring testing and the ethical pressure towards nonanimal testing means that in a first instance, expensive animal bioassays are precluded, and the use of（quantitative） structure-activity relationships （（Q）SARs） models as an alter- native source of （screening） hazard information should be explored. （Q）SAR modelling can be applied to contribute towards filling important knowledge gaps by making best use of existing data, prioritizing the physicochemical parameters driving toxicity, and providing practical solutions for the risk assessment problems caused by the diversity of ENMs. This paper covers the core components required for successful application of （Q）SAR methods to ENM toxicity prediction, summarizes the published nano-（Q）SAR studies, and outlines the challenges ahead for nano-（Q）SAR modelling. It provides a critical review of （1） the present availability of ENM characterization/toxicity data, （2） the characterization of nanostructures that meet the requirements for （Q）SAR analysis, （3） published nano-（Q）SAR studies and their limitations, （4） in silico tools for （Q）SAR screening of nanotoxicity, and （5） prospective directions for the development of nano-（Q）SAR models.

Queensland fruit fly[Bactrocera Uyoni(Froggatt),Diptera,Tephritidae]is the most devastating insect pest impacting Australian *** Sterile Insect Technique(SIT)is an important component of tephritid pest management ***,mass-rearing and irradiation(to render insects sterile)may reduce the fitness and performance of the insect,including the ability of sterile males to successfully compete for wild *** of the gut microbiome,including the supplementation with bacterial probiotics shows promise for enhancing the quality of mass-reared sterile flies,however there are fewer published studies targeting the larval *** this study,we supplemented the larval stage of mass-reared *** with bacterial *** tested several individual bacteria that had been previously isolated and characterized from the gut of wild *** larvae including Asaia sp.,Enterobacter sp.,Lactobacillus sp.,Leuconostoc *** also tested a consortium of all four of these bacterial *** fitness parameters tested included adult survival in field cages,laboratory mate selection of bacteria supplemented males by bacteria nonsupplemented females,and laboratory locomotor activity of adult *** of the bacterial probiotic treatments in the current study was significantly different to the control for field survival,mate selection or locomotor activity of adult ***,which agree with some of the other studies regarding bacterial probiotics fed to the larval stage of *** work is needed to determine if feeding the same,and/or other probiotics to adults,as opposed to larvae can positively impact survival,mating performance,mating competitiveness and locomotor activity of *** bacterial group(s)and function of bacterial species that increase fitness and competitiveness is also of interest to tephritid mass-rearing programs.

Changes in permanent sample plots in the lowland,submontane and montane forests on Mount Cameroon(4,095 m above sea level),an active volcano,are described for 15 years from 1989 to *** the study period,the stocking level of trees with a diameter at breast height(DBH) ≥ 10 cm in the three forests were lower than in pan-tropical stands suggesting a significant impact of volcanic and human-related activities on the vegetation communities on the *** mortality rates in the submontane and montane forests were consistent with those reported for comparable altitudinal ranges in the Blue Mountains of *** annual mortality rate was higher in the lowland forest than other lowland sites *** between recruitment and mortality rates was large suggesting that the three vegetation communities have not reached their *** seven-year difference in half-life of large trees(with a DBH ≥ 50 cm) in the submontane and montane forests suggests an altitudinal effect on turnover of larger trees that in turn contributes to the frequent small stature of high altitude *** was little evidence of an altitudinal effect on species turnover and growth *** finding supports generalizations about the zero effect of growth on the stature of high altitude *** forest dynamics is crucially important in the management of tropical montane environmentsand in this instance particularly so given the recent creation of the Mount Cameroon National Park.

High seroprevalence of asymptomatic viral haemoparasites among prospective blood donors in Nigeria

Objective:To determine the prevalence of viral haemoparasites in prospective Nigerian blood ***:Ethical clearance was obtained and informed consent questionnaires were distributed to blood donors to obtain their demographical data.A total of 186 blood donors from LAUTECH Teaching Hospital,Osogbo were tested for hepatitis A virus(HAV),hepatitis B virus(HBV) and hepatitis C virus(HCV) using rapid test kit and Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent ***:The highest prevalence of blood transmitted infections was 182(97.85%) while the prevalence of HIV,HAV,HBV and HCV were 6.45%,97.85%,14.52% and 3.23% *** seroprevalence for hepatitis A,B and C occurred among low risk *** was no significant association between all the hepatitis viruses and demographic factors except occupation with P value of 0.002 *** A,B and C seropositive blood donors on average tend to have PCV within the normal reference *** of the 27 hepatitis B positive blood donors,22 were donating blood for the first time while 5 were repeat *** of the hepatitis C seropositive donors have been exposed to blood or any form of its products and were all donating blood for the first ***,the distribution of donor type for HAV is ***:The presence of HAV,HBV,HCV and HIV among prospective donors in Nigeria particularly the alarming prevalence of *** infections can be transmitted to recipients if proper screening is not carried out,hence they should be included as a routine test for blood donors.

Over the last decades and centuries,European mountain landscapes have experienced substantial *** and anthropogenic LULC changes(land use and land cover changes), especially agro-pastoral activities,have directly influenced the spatial organization and composition of European mountain *** the past sixty years, natural reforestation has been occurring due to a decline in both agricultural production activities and rural ***, to better anticipate future changes,need spatially and temporally explicit models to identify areas at risk of land change and possible *** paper presents an integrated approach combining forecasting scenarios and a LULC changes simulation model to assess where LULC changes may occur in the Pyrenees Mountains,based on historical LULC trends and a range of future socio-economic *** proposed methodologyconsiders local specificities of the Pyrenean valleys,sub-regional climate and topographical properties,and regional economic *** indicate that some regions are projected to face strong abandonment, regardless of the scenario ***, high rates of change are associated with administrative regions where land productivity is highly dependent on socio-economic drivers and climatic and environmental conditions limit intensive(agricultural and/or pastoral) production and *** combination of the results for the four scenarios allows assessments of where encroachment(*** by shrublands) and reforestation are the most *** assessment intends to provide insight into the potential future development of the Pyrenees to help identify areas that are the most sensitive to change and to guide decision makers to help their management decisions.
