Identification of agricultural systems in the mountains of Northeast Thailand

Agricultural systems in Thailand's northeastern mountains are described in terms of their type of crops, marketing channels, and labor requirements. Five distinctive systems are identified: The Field crop system, Fruit tree system, Industrial tree plantation system, Specialty crop system and Agro-tourism system. The different systems are compared with each other in order to identify their respective strengths and weaknesses as development models. The Field crop system covers the largest area of agricultural land and is found in all mountainous villages but it generates very low net profits per hectare. The Specialty crop system and Agro-tourism system generate very high net profits per hectare but cover only a small land area and have a restricted spatial distribution. Expansion of these high value systems may be limited because they are capital and labor intensive and require highly skilled farmers to manage them successfully. If these constraints can be overcome, they may offer a useful model for mountain agricultural development.

The expanding demand for biofuel feedstock may lead to large-scale con- scription of land for monoculture production ofbiofuel crops with concomitant substantial negative impacts on biodiversity. We compared moth diversity in light-trap samples from corn, miscanthus, switchgrass and native prairie, to determine whether there is an observ- able relationship between plant species diversity and moth abundance and diversity. Moth alpha diversity was highest in prairie and was higher in switchgrass than in the other two biofuel crops. Beta diversity generally was low among the biofuel crops, and prairie shared lower beta diversity with switchgrass than with corn or miscanthus. Analysis of variance showed no significant differences in moth abundance per species among treatments. The alpha and beta diversity index findings are consistent with those of other studies on arthro- pods in biofuel crops and provide evidence to suggest that large-scale conversion of acreage to biofuel crops may have substantial negative effects on arthropod biodiversity both within the cropping systems and in the surrounding landscape.

Purpose–This study aims to study the connected vehicle(CV)impact on highway operational performance under a mixed CV and regular vehicle(RV)***/methodology/approach–The authors implemented a mixed trafﬁcﬂow model,along with a CV speed control model,in the simulation *** to the different trafﬁc characteristics between CVs and RVs,this researchﬁrst analyzed how the operation of CVs can affect highway capacity under both one-lane and multi-lane cases.A hypothesis was then made that there shall exist a critical CV penetration rate that can signiﬁcantly show the beneﬁt of CV to the overall trafﬁ*** prove this concept,this study simulated the mixed trafﬁc pattern under various ***–The results of this research revealed that performing optimal speed control to CVs will concurrently beneﬁt RVs by improving highway ***,a critical CV penetration rate should exist at a speciﬁed trafﬁc demand level,which can signiﬁcantly reduce the speed difference between RVs and *** results offer effective insight to understand the potential impacts of different CV penetration rates on highway operation ***/value–This approach assumes that there shall exist a critical CV penetration rate that can maximize the beneﬁts of CV *** penetration rate(the proportion of CVs in mixed trafﬁc)is the key factor affecting the impacts of CV on freeway operational *** evaluation criteria for freeway operational performance are using average travel time under different given trafﬁc demand patterns.

Unmitigated tropospheric delay is one of the major error sources in precise point positioning(PPP).Precise Slant Tropospheric Delay(STD)estimation could help to provide cleaner observables for PPP,and improve its convergence,accuracy,and *** is difficult to model accurately due to the rapid spatial and temporal variation of the water vapor in the *** the traditional approach,the STD is mapped from the zenith direction,which assumes a spherically symmetric local tropospheric profile and has *** this paper,a new approach of directly estimating the STD from high resolution numerical weather modeling(NWM)products is *** approach benefits from the best available meteorological information to improve real time STD estimation,with the RMS residual lower than 3.5 cm above 15°elevation,and 2 cm above 30°.Therefore,the new method can provide sufficient accuracy to improve PPP convergence *** improve the performance of the new method in highly variable tropospheric conditions,a correction scheme is proposed which combines NWM information with multi-GNSS observations from a network of local continuously operating reference *** is demonstrated through a case study that this correction scheme is quite effective in reducing the STD estimation residuals and PPP convergence time.
