Characterization of retinal microvasculature in acute non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy using the retinal functional imager: a prospective case series

Exploring the Feasibility of Text Messaging Intervention in Intimate Partner Violence

Introduction: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is defined as controlling, abusive, and aggressive behavior in a romantic relationship. Women between the ages 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of IPV. IPV costs US society at least $13.6 billion annually and is expected to rise to $15.6 billion by 2021. The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of Text Messaging Intervention (TMI) in recognizing, responding and preventing IPV among college students. The research questions are: Will TMI 1) improve participant knowledge of warning signs of IPV? (Knowledge) and 2) improve participant confidence to intervene in IPV? (Confidence). Methods: A mixed methods design in data collection and data analysis was used. One-way ANOVA and Chi-square test were used to analyze quantitative data from the pre and post TMI survey. Results of the qualitative data analysis are included verbatim. Results: Results showed that knowledge level pre to post test increased from 2.00 ± 1.00 to 2.7 ± 0.48 (p < 0.001) and confidence level pre to post test increased from 2.89 ± 0.60 to 3.30 ± 0.68 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Further research is needed in evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of IPV prevention programs that uses mobile devices to create the best optimal health outcomes.

Assessing the Readability and Usability of Online H-E-L-P Intervention for IPV Survivors

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the readability and usability of an online HELP (Health, Education, and Legal Program) intervention for women experiencing IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) by asking graduate nursing students to review in class nine online HELP intervention modules. Design: A descriptive online survey administered to 15 graduate nursing students was used to assess the readability and usability of an online HELP intervention. Methods: Participants were asked to perform the following activities: 1) reading the nine HELP modules on PowerPoint as posted on Blackboard (a web-based course management program), 2) filling in five blank lines under each heading (HEALTH, EDUCATION, LEGAL, and PROGRAM), by writing words or terms on the line after each heading, 3) ranking the words within each heading (with #1 as the highest and #5 as the lowest), 4) engaging in a class discussion of the rationale for the ranking, 5) re-ranking, and 6) voting on the ranking. The results were compiled to yield a master rank and vote order for each heading between 12 (received 12 votes) and 15 (received 15 votes) of the words that were ranked #1. Results: The words that were ranked #1 under each heading and the number of votes received were: Under HEALTH: Depression (15), Anger (14), Anxiety (13), and Pain (12);EDUCATION: Safety (15), Injury (14), Social Support (13) and Parenting/Child Care (12);LEGAL: Protection from Abuse (15), Attorney (14), Court/Hearing (13), and Rights (12);PROGRAM: Internet (15), Online (14), Intervention (13) and Resources (12). Conclusions: HELP intervention is readable and usable however, HELP needs to be piloted to ensure that survivors of IPV participants can access and benefit from HELP intervention.

Clay preference and particle transport behavior of Formosan subterranean termites （Isoptera： Rhinotermitidae）＂ A laboratory study

Although preference and utilization of clay have been studied in many higher termites, little attention has been paid to lower termites, especially subterranean termites. The Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, can modify its habitat by using clay to fill tree cavities. Here, the biological significance of clay on C. formosanus was investigated. Choice tests showed that significantly more termites aggre- gated in chambers where clay blocks were provided, regardless of colony group, observation period, or nutritional condition （fed or starved）. No-choice tests showed that clay had no observable effect on survivorship, live or dry biomass, water content, and tunneling activity after 33-35 d. However, clay appeared to significantly decrease filter paper consumption （dry weight loss）. Active particle （sand, paper, and clay） transport behavior was observed in both choice and no-choice tests. When present, clay was preferentially spread on the substrate, attached to the smooth surfaces of the containers, and used to line sand tunnels. Mechanisms and potential application of clay attraction are discussed.

Rethinking random Hough Forests for video database indexing and pattern search

Hough Forests have demonstrated effective performance in object detection tasks, which has potential to translate to exciting opportunities in pattern search. However, current systems are incompatible with the scalability and performance requirements of an interactive visual search. In this paper, we pursue this potential by rethinking the method of Hough Forests training to devise a system that is synonymous with a database search index that can yield pattern search results in near real time. The system performs well on simple pattern detection, demonstrating the concept is ***, detection of patterns in complex and crowded street-scenes is more challenging. Some success is demonstrated in such videos, and we describe future work that will address some of the key questions arising from our work to date.

Ototoxicity of styrene

Styrene is extensively used in industry,but its ototoxicity,in particular in the pregnant female and the offspring,is still not well *** the current study,young adult male rats and pregnant female rats were exposed to styrene by gavage at different *** young adult male rats received a total of 12g/kg styrene within different periods (800 mg/kg/day for 5 days/week for 3 weeks,400 mg/kg/day for 5 days/week for 6 weeks,200 mg/kg/day for 5 days/week for 12 weeks,and 100 mg/kg/day for 5 days/week for 24 weeks) and the pregnant female rats received styrene at a dose of 400 mg/kg/day for 5 days/week for 6 weeks starting from the gestation *** loss and hair cell loss were assessed 5 days after the styrene treatment in the young adult male rats and in the mother *** cochlear impairments in the rat pups were examined 2 months after their *** styrene exposure caused hearing loss and hair cell loss starting from the mid-frequency region in the third row of outer hair cells (OHCs) and the impairments appeared to be related to the dosing level in each single ***,the styrene exposure to the pregnant rats interfered with auditory functional development of their fetus,leading to a deficit of cochlear amplification,although the OHCs appeared to develop *** results indicate that a short-term high-level styrene exposure may be more ototoxic than a long-term low-level exposure for a similar total styrene dose and the styrene in the pregnant woman’s body may interfere with auditory development of their fetus.

Assessing gully erosion and rehabilitation using multi temporal LiDAR DEMs:Case study from the Great Barrier Reef catchments,Australia

Millions of dollars are being spent on gully rehabilitation to help reduce excess fine sediment delivery to the Great Barrier Reef(GBR).There is an urgent need for(i)prioritisation of active gullies for rehabilitation and(ii)the development of methodologies to inform the effectiveness of *** this study we analyse DEMs of Difference derived from 0.5 m resolution 2-3 year interval multi-temporal LiDAR data collected pre and post rehabilitation at three variable gully morphologies in the Burdekin *** analysis indicates that the highest annual average fine sediment erosion rates for the untreated control gullies occur at the linear gully(53.38 t ha^(-1)y^(-1))followed by linear-alluvial gully(34.24 t ha^(-1)y^(-1))and least at the alluvial gully(14.41 t ha^(-1)y^(-1)).The proportional loss or export of fine sediment from the gullies in their un-treated condition ranges from∼68 to 90%of what is eroded,and when the gullies are treated the proportion of fine sediment that is retained in the gully proportional to what is eroded increases to∼60%at all *** pre-treatment baseline erosion rates,and additional post treatment LiDAR captures,it is difficult to quantify the treatment *** results offer insights in the erosion mechanisms within different geomorphic gully morphologies and rehabilitation effects in these erosional *** study provides crucial knowledge of gully dynamics that can be coupled with other lines of evidence for better prioritisation of rehabilitation in the GBR catchments.

Localized treatments using commercial dust and liquid formulations of fipronil against Coptotermes formosanus （Isoptera： Rhinotermitidae） in the laboratory

Use of proper application methods and formulations of termiticides are im- portant to reduce their negative impact to the environment. In this study, we conducted laboratory experiments to determine the effect of localized treatments with commercial dust and liquid formulations of fipronil against Formosan subterranean termites, Coptoter- mes formosanus Shiraki. The test arena consisted of a specially designed 16-chambered structure with a center chamber connected to 5 foraging chambers that themselves were connected to 10 additional foraging chambers. One peripheral chamber received a liquid or dust treatment and termites were released in the center chamber. Results showed that 〉 91% of the termites were dead within the 9-d test period despite the localized treatment of only 1 foraging chamber. Termites that were still alive after 9 d were transferred to an untreated dish and held for 10 more days. The majority of those termites were dead and the rest were moribund on day 19. Regardless of the specific dish treated, both formulations of fipronil were found to be highly efficacious. Termites did not exhibit repellency to either formulation. Our results suggest that localized （or spot） treatment with either commer- cially available dust or liquid formulations of fipronil can be a viable option for control of a termite infestation where complete soil drenching is not desirable.

Long-chain n-alkanes are one of the most common organic compounds in terrestrial plants and they are well-preserved in various geological archives.n-alkanes are relatively resistant to degradation and thus they can provide high-fidelity records of past vegetation and climate ***,previous studies have shown that the interpretation of n-alkane proxies,such as the average chain length(ACL),is often ambiguous since this proxy depends on more than one *** vegetation and climate could exert controls on the n-alkane ACL,and hence its interpretation requires careful consideration,especially in regions like the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP)where topography,biome type and moisture source are highly *** further evaluate the influences of vegetation and climate on the ACL in high-elevation lakes,we examined the n-alkane distributions of the surface sediments of 55 lakes across the *** results show that the ACL across a climatic gradient is significantly affected by precipitation,rather than by *** positive correlation between ACL and precipitation may be because of the effect of microbial degradation during ***,we suggest that more caution is needed in the interpretation of ACL data in different regions.
