The roles of anurans in antagonistic networks are explained by life-habit and body-size

Interactions among living beings are the structuring basis of ecosystems,and studies of networks allow us to identify the patterns and consistency of such *** networks reflect the energy flow of communities,and identifying network structure and the biological aspects that influence its stability is crucial to understanding ecosystem *** used antagonistic anuran interactions-predator-prey and host-parasite-to assess structural patterns and to identify the key anuran species structuring these *** tested whether anuran body-size and life-habit are related to their roles in these *** collected individuals of 9 species of anurans from an area of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil and identified their prey and helminth *** used network(modularity,specialization,and nestedness)and centrality metrics(degree,closeness,and betweenness)to identify the role of anuran species in both *** then evaluated whether anuran body-size or life-habit were related to anuran centrality using generalized linear mixed *** networks formed specialized interactions in compartments composed by key species from different *** our networks,anurans with rheophilic and cryptozoic habit are central in predator-prey networks,and those with larger body size and arboreal and cryptozoic habit in the host-parasite *** study represents a step towards a better understanding of the influential factors that affect the structure of anuran antagonist networks,as well as to recognize the functioning roles of anuran species.

Modern medical training emphasizes the value of understanding the patient’s ideas,concerns and expectations,and the use of their personal perspective to assist communication,diagnosis,and uptake of all appropriate health and treatment *** requires doctors to be‘culturally sensitive’,which“…involves an awareness and acceptance of cultural differences,self-awareness,knowledge of a patient’s culture,and adaptation of skills”.Yet most of us work in one country,and often one community,for much of our professional *** who enter into academic pursuits will similarly be constrained by our own backgrounds and experiences,even though universities and medical schools often attract a multicultural *** therefore rely on our professional training and networks to extend our scope and understanding of how cultural issues impact upon our research and its relevance to our discipline and *** article uses a reflexive narrative approach to examine the role and value of international networks through the lens of one individual and one *** explores the extent to which such networks assist cross cultural sensitivity,using examples from its networks,and how these can(and have)impacted on greater cross-culturalism in our teaching and research outputs.

Optogenetic inhibition of medial prefrontal cortex projections to the nucleus accumbens core and methyl supplementation via L-Methionine attenuates cocaine-primed reinstatement

DNA methylation has been identified as a powerful and activity-dependent regulator of changes in the brain that may underlie neuroadaptations in response to various types of stimuli,including exposure to drugs of ***,the medial prefrontal cortex(mPFC)projections to the nucleus accumbens(NAc)are critically important for reinstated cocaine-seeking in a rodent model of cocaine *** circuitry undergoes several epigenetic modifications following cocaine exposure,including changes in DNA methylation that are associated with drug-seeking *** have previously shown that methyl supplementation via L-Methionine(MET)administration attenuates cocaine-seeking behavior and reverses expression and methylation patterns of the immediate early gene c-fos,suggesting that MET may act by altering the excitability of this circuitry during cocaine *** the current study,male rats were microinjected with an adeno-associated virus overexpressing halorhodopsin in the mPFC,optical fibers were surgically implanted into the NAc,and the rats were given injections of MET *** underwent acquisition of cocaine self-administration(0.75 mg/kg/infusion,2-h sessions)followed by extinction training in the absence of drug-paired *** reinstatement tests were conducted:cue-induced reinstatement without optogenetic manipulations and cocaine-primed reinstatement with optogenetic inhibition of mPFC-to-NAc *** were no group differences before the cocaine-primed reinstatement session,and all groups showed robust cue-induced *** rats treated with MET and rats that received mPFC-to-NAc inhibition showed an abolishment of cocaine-primed reinstatement,suggesting that systemic methyl supplementation may act through this critical circuity.

Therapeutic effectiveness of a single exercise session combined with WalkAide functional electrical stimulation in post-stroke patients:a crossover design study

A growing body of evidence has suggested that the imbalance of epigenetic markers and oxidative stress appears to be involved in the pathophysiology and progression of ***,strategies that modulate these biomarkers might be considered targets for neuroprotection and novel therapeutic opportunities for these *** exercise has been reported to induce changes in these epigenetic markers and improve clinical outcomes in different ***,little is reported on this in post-stroke *** purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a single exercise session with WalkAide functional electrical stimulation(FES)on cognitive performance,clinical functional parameters,oxidative stress and epigenetic modulation in post-stroke *** this crossover design study,12 post-stroke individuals aged 54–72 years of either sexes were included and subjected to a single session of exercise(45 minutes)without WalkAide functional electrical stimulation(EXE alone group),followed by another single session of exercise(45 minutes)with WalkAide functional electrical stimulation(EXE+FES group).The clinical functional outcome measures,cognitive performance and blood collections for biomarker measurements were assessed pre-and *** intervention,higher Berg Balance Scale scores were obtained in the EXE+FES group than in the EXE alone *** was no significant difference in the Timed Up and Go test results post-intervention between EXE alone and EXE+FES *** intervention,a better cognitive performance was found in both groups compared with before the *** intervention,the Timed Up and Go test scores were higher in the EXE+FES group than in the EXE alone *** addition,the intervention induced lower levels of lipid *** intervention,carbonyl level was lower,superoxide dismutase activity and superoxide dismutase/catalase activity ratio were higher in the EXE+FES group,compared with the

On the Stability of Racing Sailing Boats with Foils

The development of foils for racing boats has changed the strategy of sailing. Recently, the America＇s cup held in San Francisco, has been the theatre of a tragicomic history due to the foils. During the last round, the New-Zealand boat was winning by 8 to 1 against the defender USA. The winner is the first with 9 victories. USA team understood suddenly （may be） how to use the control of the pitching of the inain foils by adjusting the rake in order to stabilize the ship. And USA won by 9 victories against 8 to the challenger NZ. The goal in this paper is to point out few aspects which could be taken into account in order to improve this mysterious control law which is known as the key of the victory of the USA team. There are certainly many reasons and in particular the cleverness of the sailors and of all the engineering team behind this project. But it appears interesting to have a mathematical discussion, even if it is a partial one, on the mechanical behaviour of these extraordinary sailing boats. The nunlerical exanlples given here are not the true ones. They have just been invented in order to explain the theoretical developments concerning three points： The possibility of tacking on the foils for sailing upwind, the nature of foiling instabilities, if there are, when the boat is flying and the control laws.

Plant growth depends on the continuous availability of the macro-nutrient phosphate(Pi).However,in most soils,Pi is only poorly accessible to plants,resulting in Pi deficiency and triggering a number of Pi starvation *** strategy of plants to over-come Pi limitation is to form a symbiosis with arbuscular mycor-rhizal(AM)fungi(Smith et al.,2011),which occurs with approximately 80%of land *** fungi improve the uptake of Pi and other mineral nutrients and thereby increase plant performance and stress *** collect these minerals with an extraradical hyphal network from the soil and release them from highly branched structures,called arbuscules,into root cortex ***,Pi sufficiency causes inhibition of internal root colonization(Balzergue et al.,2011;Breuillin et al.,2010).The mechanistic basis for this has long remained *** studies have now solved this long-standing mystery and demonstrated that a canonical Pi-response regulatory module regulates AM symbiosis in accordance with the plant Pi status(Shi et al.,2021;Das et al.,2022).

Parkin protein expression and its impact on survival of patients with advanced colorectal cancer

Objective:Features of colorectal cancer such as natural history,molecular,chromosomal,and epigenetic alterations have been well ***,there is still a lack of accurate prognostic markers,which is evident by the lower overall survival rates of patients with advanced *** alterations in parkin protein expression have been described in colorectal cancer,the functional significance of this protein remains *** present study aimed to investigate the involvement of parkin expression in colorectal adenocarcinoma development and progression by evaluating the association between its expression,clinicopathological parameters,and expression of known proteins involved in colorectal ***:Tissue microarrays consisting of 73 tumor and 64 normal tissue samples were generated to examine parkin expression and localization by ***:A positive correlation of parkin and APC expression was observed in the superficial,intermediate,and profound regions of all cases(ρ=0.37;P=0.001).Parkin expression was also significantly associated with tumors in men(P=0.049),those of the mucinous subtype(P=0.028),and of advanced stage(III+IV,P=0.041).In addition,increased parkin expression was observed in the invasive front tumor region(P=0.013).More importantly,a positive correlation was found between parkin expression and the overall survival of patients with advanced colorectal cancer(P=0.019).Multivariate analysis showed that parkin expression was independent of any of the clinicopathological parameters evaluated in relation to patient ***:These results suggest that parkin expression status can be used as a potential independent prognostic marker of survival in advanced colorectal cancer.
