Antioxidant Properties, Polyphenol Content and Colorimetric Characteristics of Different Floral Origin Honeys from Different Areas of Southern Italy

Ninety honey samples of five different floral origins （chestnut, eucalyptus, citrus, multifloral and sulla） from nine areas of southern Italy, were screened to evaluate the polyphenol content by spectrphotometric methods, the antioxidant activity by ABTS （2,2＇ -azino-bis-（3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid？ diamonium salt, FRAP （ferric reducing antioxidant power） and DPPH （I,I-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl） assays, and the colorimetric characteristics by spectrophotometric and CIE （Commission Internationale de I＇Eclairage） L ＊a＊b＊ methods. Moreover, the correlations between the analysed parameters were studied. Overall, the results showed that all the honey samples presented high total phenolic and flavonoid contents （12.23 mg gallic acid equivalent/lOOg honey and 8.16 mg quercetin equivalent/lOOg honey, respectively）, and a high antioxidant activity （59.17%, 66.50% and 349.11 11M Fe （II） for ABTS, DPPH and FRAP assays, respectively）, but those results differ widely according to the honey types, suggesting that honey composition has been influenced by its floral and geographical origin. In particular, the darkest honeys, such as chestnut honey （L ＊ = 59.94; 1.26 AU）, showed the highest polyphenol content and the highest antioxidant activity. Honeys from the areas with major anthropogenic activities and high population density presented the highest antioxidant activity. Correlations between the analysed parameters were statistically significant （P 〈 0.05）, suggesting that the polyphenol content is correlated with the antioxidant activity and colour of honey.

Several ectoparasites parasitise nestlings decreasing their body condition,growth and *** minimise any loss of fitness due to ectoparasites,birds have developed a wide variety of defence mechanisms,potentially including hatching *** to the Tasty Chick Hypothesis(TCH),the cost of parasitism would be reduced if ectoparasites tend to eat on less immunocompetent nestlings,typically the last-hatched chick in asynchronously hatched broods,as they are in poor body *** predictions of the TCH are that immune capacity is lower in smaller nestlings than in larger ones and that parasites should provoke a more negative effect on smaller ***,we test these predictions in a population of Blue Tits(Cyanistes caeruleus)whose broods are parasitised by Hen Fleas(Ceratophyllus gallinae)and Blowflies(Protocalliphora azurea).We recorded the presence of both ectoparasites and analysed the immunocompetence(number of leucocytes per 10,000 erythrocytes and cutaneous immune response to phytohaemagglutinin)and body condition of smaller and larger nestlings within individual *** leucocyte count was higher in smaller nestlings than in larger ones,whereas the cutaneous immune response did not differ between smaller and larger *** nestlings,but not larger nestlings,had lower body mass when fleas were ***,by contrast,had no detectable negative effect on ***,our findings provide partial support to the *** immune capacity in smaller nestlings than in larger ones was not supported,but Hen Fleas seemed to negatively impact on smaller nestlings more than on larger ones.

Endoscopic features of gastro-intestinal lymphomas: From diagnosis to follow-up

Many progresses have been done in the management of gastrointestinal(GI) lymphomas during last decades, especially after the discovery of Helicobacter pylori-dependent lymphoma development. The stepwise implementation of new endoscopic techniques, by means of echoendoscopy or double-balloon enteroscopy, enabled us to more precisely describe the endoscopic features of GI lymphomas with substantial contribution in patient management and in tailoring the treatment strategy with organ preserving approaches. In this review, we describe the recent progresses in GI lymphoma management from disease diagnosis to follow-up with a specific focus on the endoscopic presentation according to the involved site and the lymphoma subtype. Additionally, new or emerging endoscopic technologies that have an impact on the management of gastrointestinal lymphomas are reported. We here discuss the two most common subtypes of GI lymphomas: the mucosaassociated lymphoid tissue and the diffuse large B cell lymphoma. A general outline on the state-of-the-art of the disease and on the role of endoscopy in both diagnosis and follow-up will be performed.

Currently, sorafenib is the only systemic therapy capable of increasing overall survival of hepatocellular carcinoma patients. Unfortunately, its side effects, particularly its overall toxicity, limit the therapeutic response that can be achieved. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles （SPIONs） are very attractive for drug delivery because they can be targeted to specific sites in the body through application of a magnetic field, thus improving intratumoral accumulation and reducing adverse effects. Here, nanoformulations based on polyethylene glycol modified phospholipid micelles, loaded with both SPIONs and sorafenib, were successfully prepared and thoroughly investigated by complementary techniques. This nanovector system provided effective drug delivery, had an average hydrodynamic diameter of about 125 nm, had good stability in aqueous medium, and allowed controlled drug loading. Magnetic analysis allowed accurate determination of the amount of SPIONs embedded in each micelle. An in vitro system was designed to test whether the SPION micelles can be efficiently held using a magnetic field under typical flow conditions found in the human liver. Human hepatocellular carcinoma （HepG2） cells were selected as an in vitro system to evaluate tumor cell targeting efficacy of the superparamagnetic micelles loaded with sorafenib. These experiments demonstrated that this delivery platform is able to enhance sorafenib＇s antitumor effectiveness by magnetic targeting. The magnetic nanovectors described here represent promising candidates for targeting specific hepatic tumor sites, where selective release of sorafenib can improve its efficacy and safety profile.

Genetic Diversity within Wild Potato Species (Solanum spp.) Revealed by AFLP and SCAR Markers

Exploitation of variability displayed by wild Solanum species for breeding the cultivated potato (S. tuberosum) requires phenotypic and genotypic characterization of germplasm resources. In the present work, a collection of 15 wild Solanum species was investigated for resistance to pathotype Ro2 of the nematode Globodera rostochiensis. Most of the genotypes reduced reproduction of the nematode, compared to the control variety Spunta, a highly resistant genotype being an accession of S. tuberosum spp. andigena. The genetic variability of the Gro1 gene cluster, which confers resistance to some pathotypes of G. rostochiensis, was then studied in the Solanum species used in this study. For this purpose, SCAR markers for eight paralogues of Gro1 gene were developed. No species showed the same pattern of the resistant control genotype. Moreover, wide-genome variability was also assessed by using AFLP markers, which allowed species-specific markers to be identified for each genotype analyzed.

AIM: To identify suitable biomarkers of response to bevacizumab(BV)- it remains an open question. The measurement of serum vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) has been proposed as a predictive factor for this drug, even if literature data are contradictory. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated the role of BV, total and not BV-bound VEGF and angiopoietin-2(Ang-2) serum levels as potential predictive factors of response for BV in combination with an oxaliplatinbased chemotherapy. BV, Ang-2, total and not BVbound VEGF levels were measured at baseline, before 2^(nd) and 5^(th) cycle of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in 20 consecutive metastatic colorectal cancer patients. RESULTS: Results were correlated to response to treatment. Variability in BV levels have been found, with decreased level in less responding patients. In particular, the concentration of BV increased of 3.96 ± 0.69 folds in serum of responsive patients after 3 more cycles of therapy compared to those with stable or progressive disease with a 0.72 ± 0.25 and 2.10 ± 0.13 fold increase, respectively. The determination of free and total VEGF demonstrated that the ratio between the two values, evaluated immediately before the 2^(nd) and the 5^(th) cycle of therapy, decreased from 26.65% ± 1.33% to 15.50% ± 3.47% in responsive patients and from 53.41% ± 4.75 to 34.95% ± 2.88% in those with stable disease. Conversely, in those with progression of disease, the ratio showed the opposite behavior coming up from 25.99% ± 5.23% to 51.71% ± 5.28%. The Ang-2 levels did not show any relationship. CONCLUSION: Our data show that the ratio of not BV-bound VEGF to total VEGF serum and BV plasma concentrations for predicting the response to BV plus oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy could be a promising biomarker of response to BV.

Nutrient and Chlorophyll <i>α</i>Variability at a Micro-Scale Level in a Suspended Mussel Culture

Mussel farming by the long-line system, in the shallow waters of the NW Thessaloniki Gulf, Greece, is a vital economic activity for the local communities. The management practices play an important role both in the environmental quality and the support of the healthy growth of mussels. Αn experimental line of mussels in suspension placed at different sock distances as a management practice was systematically monitored for nutrients, chlorophyll α and dissolved oxygen. The study at four different mussel densities (distances of the socks) lasted from July 2014 to April 2015, covering the growth, reproduction and harvest cycle of mussels. Additional sampling took place in two selected sock distances, 30 and 70 cm, in the second sampling period, May-August 2015. The variability of nutrients along with chlorophyll α and dissolved oxygen, seasonally, spatially and vertically, was examined with the application of multivariate statistical analysis. The results showed low variation of nitrates among the sites but statistically significant differences of dissolved oxygen, ammonium, phosphate and chlorophyll α. The application of environmental indicators (TRIX, EI) in the data set was a useful tool in the identification of different variation schemes of the measured parameters in the cultures of various mussel densities.
