The potential of mangrove-derived endophytic fungi as a promising source of diverse and structurally unprecedented bioactive natural products is unquestionable and continues to attract considerable *** review highlights new bioactive mangrove fungal metabolites and known compounds with hitherto unreported biological activities described during the last 10 *** compounds are categorized according to their reported biological activities,including cytotoxic,anti-infective,in addition to a wide range of miscellaneous activities such as protein kinase,αglucosidase,acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase inhibitory activities,as well as antiangiogenic and neovascularisation effects,radical scavenging,DNA-binding affinity,and calcium and potassium channel blocking activity.

The potential of endophytes and algal or invertebrate associated marine derived fungi as promising sources of structurally unprecedented bioactive natural products is undeniable and continues to attract broad *** review highlights new bioactive fungal metabolites reported in 2011 until April 2012,as well as known compounds for which novel biological activities have been *** compounds are grouped according to their reported biological activities which include cytotoxic,anti-infective,as well as radical scavenging,enzyme inhibition,anti-fouling and anti-parasitic ***,178 fungal metabolites,including 138 new natural products are ***,new insights into fungal-host interaction,chemical communication,and chemo-ecological roles of fungal metabolites,as well as new strategies for bioprospecting are presented.

Synthesis, Characterization and Utilization of Starch Hydroxypropyl Sulphate for Cationic Dye Removal

The best conditions for synthesis of starch hydroxypropyl sulphate as per the dry method were firstly established. This was done through a thorough investigation into factors affecting the synthesis including concentrations of both the NaOH catalyst and the 2-hydroxy-3-chloropropyl sulphate along with duration and temperature of the reaction. The resultant newly synthesized 2-hydroxy-3-chloropropyl sulphate was then reacted with starch to obtain starch hydroxypropyl sulphate ultimately. After being characterized by making use of IR spectroscopy analysis and scanning electronic microscope, the starch hydroxypropyl sulphate samples were submitted to evaluation for cationic dye removal using Methylene Blue (MB). Cationic dye removal was studied under a variety of conditions. Factors involved encompass initial dye concentration, duration, sulphur %, pH and adsorbent dose. 100% dye removal could be achieved under certain conditions which were described in the text.

A simple, sensitive, precise and robust high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method for analysis of tricin has been developed and validated for the determination of tricin in genus Spergularia. Analysis of tricin was performed on pre-coated TLC aluminum plates with silica gel as the stationary phase. Linear ascending development was carried out in double twin trough glass chamber saturated with a mobile phase consisting of chloroform: methanol (37:3 v/v). Spectro-densitometric scanning was performed by TLC scanner III (CAMAG) in absorbance mode at the wavelength of 270 nm. The system was found to give compact spots for tricin (Rf value of 0.34 ± 0.04). The linear regression analysis data for the calibration plots showed a good linear relationship with r2 = 0.9981 in the concentration range 2-15 μl with respect to peak area. According to the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines, the method was validated for precision, recovery, and robustness. The tricin content quantified from Spergularia marina and S. daiandra was found to be 0.398 mg/100g and 1.642 mg/100g fresh weight, respectively. Statistical analysis of the data showed that the method is reproducible and selective for the estimation of tricin.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of (Commiphora molmol(Myrrh)) extract as alternative treatment in hamsters against giardiasis. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the new compound (Commiphora molmol(Myrrh)), as agent a natural product extracted from the roots of Zingiber officinal, on Giardia lamblia infection as anti-protozoal and to study the parasitological and Histopathological impact of this treatment on the duodenal mucosa of infected hamsters. Fifty hamsters were divided into five groups: Group (A): normal control. Group (B): Giardia lamblia infected and untreated hamsters served as control. Group (C): infected with Giardia lamblia and treated with metronidazole in dose (120 μg/kg body weight twice daily for 7 successive days). Group (D) Giardia lamblia infected and orally treated with Myrrh (500 mg/Kg for 1 week). Group (E): Giardia lamblia infected and orally treated with combination 1/3 dose of (120 μg/kg body weight) metronidazole and Myrrh (250 mg/Kg) for 1 week). After 2 weeks of the treatment, hamsters were sacrificed. The highest percentages of reduction in the number of Giardia lamblia cysts and trophozoites were in the group receiving combined metronidazole and myrrh. Histopathological examination revealed complete healing of intestinal mucosa after the combined treatment, while partial healing of the lining epithelium of the intestine was noticed after metronidazole and either myrrh plant treatment.

Study of OmpK35 and OmpK36 Expression in Carbapenem Resistant ESBL Producing Clinical Isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae

Background: Carbapenem resistant extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is increasing worldwide. Carbapenem resistance (CR) has been attributed not only to production of carbapenemases but also to permeability barriers due to outer membrane proteins (OmpK35 and OmpK36) disruption. Objective: Phenotypic detection of CR among ESBL producing K. pneumoniae isolates, followed by the evaluation of the role of ompK35 and ompK36 gene expression among carbapenem resistant K. pneumoniae (CR-KP) isolates. Methods: 100 ESBL producing K. pneumoniae isolates were included in this study. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of imipenem was performed for all isolates by broth microdilution method. For CR-KP isolates, phenotypic detection of K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC), metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) and AmpC enzymes was performed followed by Realtime qRT-PCR to detect and quantify ompK35 and ompK36 gene expression. Results: 42% of our isolates were carbapenem resistant, and all of them were KPC producers either singly or in combination with MBL and/or AmpC production. Reduced expression of both ompK35 and ompK36 was detected in (52.38%) of CR-KP isolates, while reduced expression of ompK36 or ompK35 alone was found in (2.38%) and (33.33%) respectively. Twenty of 42 CR-KP isolates (47.62%), showing reduced ompK35 and ompK36 expression, exhibited high level resistance (HLR) (>32 μg/ml) to imipenem. There was a significant correlation between reduced expression of ompK36 and increase MIC values (p < 0.05). The combined production of MBL or AmpC together with reduced expression of ompK35 and/or ompK36 resulted in significant increase in imipenem MIC (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The combined OmpK35/OmpK36 loss resulted in HLR. However OmpK36 seems to play a major role in those strains. Imipenem MIC was markedly increased among K. pneumoniae showing carbapenemase and/or AmpC production together with loss of OmpK35 and/or OmpK36.

Removal of Some Toxic Ions from Seawater and Wastewater by Sorption onto Natural, Synthetic Hydroxyapatite and Alginate-Hydroxyapatite Composite Nanoparticles: A Comparative Study

The main objective of this paper is to study the removal of Cadmium(II), Lead(II), Chromium(VI), and Mercury(II) ions by sorption onto different natural and synthetic nanoparticles. Special attention has been given to the application of fish bone in nanoform as a useful, inexpensive and eco-friendly alternative material. A comparison between natural hydroxyapatite (fish bone), synthetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAP) and alginate-hydroxyapatite composite (Alg/Hap) to assess their removal efficiencies to remediate the selected heavy metals has been done. Surface characterization by using different techniques has also been performed to understand the influence of surface characteristics of the adsorbent materials in the removal process. Different parameters (pH, contact time, mass dose and metal ion concentration) have been examined to identify the optimum conditions for remediation of different metals from polluted water. The potential applications of the biosorbents for removal and sorption of these metal ions from seawater and wastewater samples were also investigated and evaluated.
