since their introduction in the 1960s, cochlear implants （CIs） have undergone several transformations, ulti- mately positioning themselves as the best-performing neural prosthesis available today. They have also been recognized as a unique tool for studying the potential protective effects of patterned electrical stimulation on the developing auditory system, with results from animal models often changing the manner in which CIs are used clinically to deliver auditory information to the brain （Moore and shannon, 2009）. From the development of the first successful commercial single-channel device, they have evolved into multi-channel devices that are part of the national health programmes of several coun- tries. From the limited speech information provided by the early, rudimentary cochlear implants, these devices are now in a position to deliver intelligible speech infor- mation to the auditory system, largely due to advances in signal processing. Concerted efforts from several dis- ciplines, including engineering, acoustics, neurobiology and otolaryngology have ensured that the continued development of CI technology has resulted in signifi- cant benefits to individuals with profound sensorineural hearing loss.

Objective: To assess the protective effect of galangin on membrane bound enzymes in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Methods: A single low dose of streptozotocin was injected to adult male albino rats to induce hyperglycemia. Galangin(8 mg/kg) or glibenclamide 600 μg/kg as a standard drug was given orally once daily for 45 days by gavage. Membrane-bound adenosine triphosphatases were determined including total ATPase, sodium-potassium-ATPase, calcium-ATPase and magnesium-ATPase in erythrocytes and tissues(kidney, liver, and heart). Results: The levels of total ATPases, sodium-potassium-ATPase, calcium-ATPase and magnesium-ATPase in erythrocytes and tissues were significantly altered in diabetic rats as compared to that in normal rats. After 45 days of treatment with galangin or glibenclamide, the levels of these enzymes were similar to that of normal control rats. Conclusions: Oral administration of galangin or glibenclamide can improve activities of these membrane-bound ATPases towards normal levels. Mechanism of galangin needs to be further explored in future.

Date palm pit(DPP)-filled poly(-hydroxybutyrate)(PHB)composites were prepared,evaluated,and characterized to determine their thermal insulation *** conductivity values ranged between 0.086 and 0.100 W/(m·K).At a maximum filler concentration(50%(w)),the specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity were 1183 J/(kg·K)and 0.0689 mm^(2)/s,*** DPP increased the thermal stability,and the highest compressive strength obtained was 80 MPa at 30%filler *** PHB-DPP composites exhibited promising water absorption(less than 6%)and tensile strength(6-14 MPa).Date-pit-based PHB composites could be used in sustainable building engineering and cleaner production.

The Hand Gestures Recognition(HGR)system can be employed to facilitate communication between humans and computers instead of using special input and output *** devices may complicate communication with computers especially for people with *** gestures can be defined as a natural human-to-human communication method,which also can be used in human-computer *** researchers developed various techniques and methods that aimed to understand and recognize specific hand gestures by employing one or two machine learning algorithms with a reasonable *** aims to develop a powerful hand gesture recognition model with a 100%recognition *** proposed an ensemble classification model that combines the most powerful machine learning classifiers to obtain diversity and improve *** majority voting method was used to aggregate accuracies produced by each classifier and get the final classification *** model was trained using a self-constructed dataset containing 1600 images of ten different hand *** employing of canny’s edge detector and histogram of oriented gradient method was a great combination with the ensemble classifier and the recognition *** experimental results had shown the robustness of our proposed *** Regression and support Vector Machine have achieved 100%*** developed model was validated using two public datasets,and the findings have proved that our model outperformed other compared studies.

Prior to the application of AM components for critical applications,it is necessary to have a better understanding of the effect of different post-fabrication treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of such *** this study,efforts were made to achieve an in-depth understanding of the effect of post-fabrication solution Heat Treatment(sHT)and Hot Isostatic Pressing(HIP)on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Hastelloy X parts built by electron beam powder bed fusion(PBF-EB)*** effects of sHT and HIP on porosity,microstructure,texture and mechanical properties have been investigated and compared with that of as-built PBF-EB Hastelloy ***-fabrication HIP treatment led to a significant reduction in the porosity content,whereas no notable difference in porosity was observed between sHT and as-built *** was no evidence of any recrystallization occurring following the post-fabrication treatments as elongated columnar grain structures observed within as-built part were found to be maintained even after sHT and HIP process alongside the strongcrystallographic *** was laid upon understanding the influence of sHT and HIP on mechanical properties through stress-strain curves and work-hardening behaviour.

Every year more than 5 million people worldwide become hemiplegic as a direct consequence of stroke. This neurological deficiency, often leads to a partial or a total loss of standing up abilities and/or ambulation skills. In order to propose new supporting solutions lying between the wheelchair and the walker, this paper presents a technological strategy for designing an assistive device for a biomechanical study of the sit-To-stand movement （sTs）. The control algorithms are implemented in TwinCAT runtime environment. The communi- cation between the component and the control computer is ensured via the EtherCAT fieldbus. The aim of this architecture lies in the fact that it allows a quick development of a research prototype with the same safety issues found on an industrial machine. An experimental test of the sTs strategy is presented and discussed in order to evaluate the strategy.

Impacts of 2 species of predatory Reduviidae on bagworms in oil palm plantations

Integrated pest management （IPM） is widely practiced in commercial oil palm agriculture. This management system is intended to minimize the number of attacks by pest insects such as bagworms on crops, as well as curb economic loss with less dependency on chemical pesticides. One practice in IPM is the use of biological control agents such as predatory insects. In this study, we assessed the response of predatory natural enemies to pest outbreak and water stress, and document the habitat associations of potential pest predators. The abundances of 2 predatory insect species, namely sycanus dichotomus and Cosmolestes pictieeps （Hemiptera： Reduviidae）, were compared bagworm outbreak sites and nonoutbreak sites within oil palm plantations. We also examined habitat characteristics that influence the abundances of both predatory species. We found that the abundance of C. picticeps was significantly higher in bagworm outbreak sites than in nonoutbreak sites. There were no significant differences in the abundance ofs. dichotomus among outbreak and non-outbreak sites. Both species responded negatively to water stress in oil palm plantations. Concerning the relationship between predatory insect abundance and in situ habitat quality characteristics, our models explained 46.36% of variation for C. picticeps and 23.17% of variation for s. dichotomus. Both species of predatory insects thrived from the planting of multiple beneficial plants in oil palm plantations. The results suggest that C. picticeps can be used as a biological agent to control bagworm populations in oil palm plantations, but s. dichotomus has no or little potential for such ecosystem service.
