Comparative evaluation of physico-chemical characteristics of biopolyesters P（3HB） and P（3HB-co-3HV） produced by endophytic Bacillus cereus RCL 02

BACKGROUND： Bacteria endogenously residing within the plant tissues have attracted significant attention for production of biopolyester, polyhydroxyalkanoates （PHAs）. Bacillus cereus RCL 02 （MCC 3436）, a leaf endophyte of oleaginous plant Ricinus communis L. accumulates 81% poly（3-hydroxybutyrate） [P（3HB）] of its cell dry biomass when grown in mineral salts （MS） medium. METHODS： The copolymer production efficiency of B. cereus RCL 02 was evaluated in valeric acid supplemented MS medium under biphasic cultivation condition. The copolymer so produced has been compared with the P（3HB） isolated from RCL 02 in terms of thermal, mechanical and chemical properties. RESULTS： Valeric acid supplementation as co-substrate in the medium has led to the production of copolymer of 3- hydroxybutyrate （3HB） and 3-hydroxyvalerate （3HV） [P（3HB-co-3HV）] with 14.6 mol% 3HV. The identity of the polymers has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction （XRD） analysis, Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） and nuclear magnetic resonance （NMR） spectroscopic studies. Thermogravimetric analysis （TGA） revealed that P（3HB） and P（3HB-co-3HV） films degraded at 278.66℃ and 273.49℃, respectively. The P（3HB-co-3HV） showed lower melting temperature （165.03℃） compared to P （3HB）（170.74℃） according to differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）. Incorporation of 3HV monomers decreased the tensile strength （21.52 MPa）, tensile modulus （0.93 GPa）, storage modulus （E＇）（0.99 GPa） and increased % elongation at break （12.2%） of the copolyester. However, P（3HB） showed better barrier properties with lower water vapor transmission rate （WVTR） of 0.55 g-mil/100 in2/24 h. CONCLUSION： These findings emphasized exploration of endophytic bacterial strain （RCL 02） to produce biodegradable polyesters which might have significant potential for industrial application.

Dual inoculation of salt tolerant Bradyrhizobium and Glomus mosseae for improvement of Vigna radiata L. cultivation in saline areas of West Bengal, India

This study is aimed as to evaluate the interaction between salt tolerant Bradyrhizobium sp. and Glomus mosseae in the rhizosphere of legume crop Vigna radiata L. under pot culture and field conditions in different saline zones of West Bengal, India. Bradyrhizobium sp. when inoculated alone showed marked increase in number of nodules, root and shoot length, total plant biomass, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) colonization and population etc. when compared with plants inoculated only with AMF. However, when used in combination, the in oculants showed marked change in the above mentioned parameters over single inoculation of both salt tolerant AM fungi and Bradyrhizobium. These results suggest that AMF along with Bradyrhizobium can greatly help in establishment of V. radiata L. cultivation in the saline soils of West Bengal, India. The increased production of the legume crop could also lead to further benefit of the poor farmers by up lifting their socio-economic conditions with the net profit achieved by cultivating this crop in saline stress condition of West Bengal as a second crop during rabi season.

Gasification of biomass produces a syngas containing trace amounts of viscous hydrocarbon tar,which causes serious problems in downstream pipelines,valves and processing *** study focuses on the use of tire-derived pyrolysis char for tar conversion using biomass tar model compounds representative of *** catalytic decomposition of tar model compounds,including methylnaphthalene,furfural,phenol,and toluene,over tire char was investigated using a fixed bed reactor at a bed temperature of 700℃and 60 min time on *** influence of temperature,reaction time,porous texture,and acidity of the tire char was investigated with the use of methylnaphthalene as the tar model *** tar model compounds were found to have higher conversion than those containing a single or multi-aromatic *** reactivity of tar compounds followed the order of furfural>phenol>toluene>*** conversion of the model compounds in the presence of the tire char was much higher than tar thermal *** production increased dramatically with the introduction of tire *** H_(2)potential for the studied tar model compounds was found to be in the range of 40%–50%.The activity of tire char for naphthalene removal was compared with two commercial activated carbons possessing a very well-developed porous *** results suggest that the influence of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of the carbon on tar cracking is negligible compared with the mineral content in the carbon samples.

Transformation of greenhouse gas(CO_(2))into valuable chemicals and fuels is a promising route to address the global issues of climate change and the energy *** halide perovskite catalysts have shown their potential in promoting CO_(2)reduction reaction(CO_(2)RR),however,their low phase stability has limited their application ***,we present a reduced graphene oxide(rGO)wrapped CsPbI_3 perovskite nanocrystal(NC)CO_(2)RR catalyst(CsPbI_3/rGO),demonstrating enhanced stability in the aqueous *** CsPbI_3/rGO catalyst exhibited>92%Faradaic efficiency toward formate production at a CO_(2)RR current density of~12.7 mA cm^(-2).Comprehensive characterizations revealed the superior performance of the CsPbI_3/rGO catalyst originated from the synergistic effects between the CsPbI_3 NCs and rGO,i.e.,rGO stabilized theα-CsPbI_3 phase and tuned the charge distribution,thus lowered the energy barrier for the protonation process and the formation of~*HCOO intermediate,which resulted in high CO_(2)RR selectivity toward *** work shows a promising strategy to rationally design robust metal halide perovskites for achieving efficient CO_(2)RR toward valuable fuels.

Optimization of Chromate Reduction by Whole Cells of <i>Arthrobacter</i>sp. SUK 1205 Isolated from Metalliferous Chromite Mine Environment

Arthrobacter sp. SUK 1205 isolated from metalliferous chromite mine environment of Orissa, India showed wide degree of tolerance to heavy metals including Cr(VI), variety of antibiotics and was also capable of reducing Cr(VI) during growth. Freshly grown whole cells of this bacterium were evaluated for chromate reduction under batch culture using Vogel Bonner (V. B.) broth as the base. Cells of SUK 1205 were capable of completely reducing 100 μM Cr(VI) in V. B. broth within 48 h of incubation. Reduction of chromate increased with increase in cell density which attained maximum at 1010 cells/ml, however, reverse was the phenomenon when the concentration of Cr(VI) increased gradually. Glycerol, glycine and glucose promoted chromate reduction efficiency of the cells when used as electron donors. Optimum pH and temperature were found to be 7.0 and 35°C respectively. The process of reduction was inhibited by Ni(II), Mn(II), Zn(II) and Co(II), but Cu(II) and Fe(III) was promotive in nature. On the other hand, 2, 4-dinitrophenol was found to be neither promotive nor inhibitory for the reduction process, but carbonyl cyanide-m-chloro phenyl hydrazone, sodium azide, sodium fluoride and N,N,-dicyclohexyl carboiimide were inhibitory. Cells of SUK 1205 when permeabilized with toluene, triton X-100 and tween 80 showed an enhancement of the process and thereby indicated that reduction of Cr(VI) was mainly associated with soluble component of the cells. Arthrobacter sp. SUK 1205, therefore, showed great promise for use in Cr(VI) detoxification under a wide range of environmental conditions.

Occurrence and Evaluation of Chromium Reducing Bacteria in Seepage Water from Chromite Mine Quarries of Orissa, India

Chromium pollution due to leaching and weathering of chromite mine overburden in mine seepage water is a serious environmental problem. In an attempt to explore the indigenous chromate resistant and reducing bacteria from chromite mine quarry seepage, 145 aerobic, heterotrophic bacteria were isolated from 14 mine seepage samples derived from chromite mines of Sukinda valley and Baula-Nuasahi belt in Orissa, India. A total of 109 isolates which were tolerant to 2 mM Cr(VI) showed different degrees of Cr(VI) reducing activ-ity in complex KSC medium and synthetic Vogel Bonner (VB) broth. Ten isolates belonging to genera like Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Alcaligenes, Cupriavidus and Corynebacterium were selected on the basis of their chromate reducing efficiency and it was found that they could reduce more than 50 and 75% of Cr(VI) in VB broth and KSC medium respectively. The sole Gram-positive isolate, Corynebacterium paurometabo-lum SKPD 1204 (MTCC 8730) showed maximum chromate reducing capacity in both VB broth (63.7%) and KSC medium (92%) and was capable of reducing nearly 95% of the total Cr(VI) in the mine seepage when it was grown in the mine seepage supplemented with 2% VB concentrate.

Attitudes Towards Shoplifting： A Preliminary Cross-cultural Study of Consumers

The aim of this paper is to explore the consumers’ attitudes towards shoplifting from a cross-cultural perspective. The research questions are: 1. What may influence offenders to engage in shoplifting? 2. To which extent consumer attitudes towards shoplifting might reflect cultural issues? The study adopted a quantitative approach to data collection and was conducted in two stages including different retail contexts. Preliminary analysis of 529 questionnaire responses from UK, US, and Libyan consumers finds that attitudes towards shoplifting are broadly similar despite the different cultural and retail contexts therefore this study reinforces the view that ethical behaviour is culturally bound. However, on closer inspection these findings suggest interesting disparities among the countries in relation to specific attitudes towards the consequences of shoplifting, the impact it has on the social networks of the perpetrator and whether the demographics of the shoplifter play a role in the decision to punish the offender. It also suggests that attitudes towards shoplifting are complex and context specific making it particularly problematic for international retailers to implement universal shoplifting preventative measures.
