Evaluation of Antimycotic Activity of Extracts of Marine Algae Collected from Red Sea Coast, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

In the present study, fifteen species of the dominant marine algae were collected during summer 2013 from four selected sites on Red sea coast, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The collected species belonged to Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta. Crude algal extracts were prepared by successive extractions using different solvents (acetone, ethanol, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, methanol and petroleum ether). The crude algal extracts were examined for their antifungal efficacy against Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis using agar well diffusion method. The algal extracts evoked different patterns of antifungal activities. Results reveal that acetone was the best solvent suited for extraction of bioactive compounds from tested seaweeds with inhibition activity (19.3%) followed by ethyl acetate (17.1%), ethanol (16.4%), petroleum ether (15.9%), diethyl ether (15.85%), and finally methanol (15.4%). Chlorophyta exhibited the highest antimycotic effect followed by Rhodophyta and Phaeophyta. In Chlorophyta, the extracts of Ulva intestinalis were the most potent followed by U. lactuca, C. racemosa, U. linza and U. reticulate. Acanthophora spicifera showed the highest activity in Rhodophyta, followed by J. rubens, D. simplex, L. obtusa, G. gracilis, G. vermicuphylla and G. multipartita. Whereas, T. triquetra was the most effective species in Phaeophyta followed by P. pavonica and D. dichotoma. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the most potent algal extracts were in the range of 0.5 to 4 mg/ml. The results confirmed the antimycotic potentiality of seaweed extracts.

This paper presents a comparative study on the thermal comfort of traditional and contemporary houses in Byblos,*** climate change affecting indoor environments and potentially leading to increased energy consumption,achieving optimal thermal comfort is a crucial issue for building *** study analyzes several environmental parameters and conducts an occupancy survey to assess thermal comfort in both types of *** questionnaire used in the survey consists of 46 questions divided into three parts:“Who are you?”,“The environment of your house?”,and“Architectural characteristics of the house.”The results show that traditional houses perform better than contemporary ones in terms of thermal comfort,due to their use of natural and passive ***,both types of houses have room for improvement in terms of energy *** study provides insights into potential solutions for improving indoor thermal comfort while reducing energy consumption in traditional and contemporary houses.

Perceived stress among staff in Saudi Arabian dental colleges before and after an accreditation process: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND Accreditation processes are extensively employed to guarantee the quality of higher education ***,this process can potentially generate a stressful atmosphere for staff,thus impacting their ability to perform optimally under *** To examine the knowledge of the National Commission for Academic Assessment and Accreditation(NCAAA)and its effects on perceived stress among dental college staff before and after the program accreditation *** The present cross-sectional questionnaire-based study included 300 employees from three dental *** same employees had to fill out the questionnaire 1 mo after the NCAAA *** Approximately 51.33%of the included employees believed that NCAAA is essential to attract quality students to join the program before and after the program.A total of 44.67%felt that their stress was high before,and 31.33%had low stress levels before and after *** findings were statistically significant(P≤0.05).CONCLUSION NCAAA raised the prestige of the institution and specific programmes and increased prospects to attract better students,staff,and money,according to the *** addition to their needed teaching,research,and other service responsibilities,this work requires a tremendous amount of faculty effort and may cause them stress.

Date palm pit(DPP)-filled poly(-hydroxybutyrate)(PHB)composites were prepared,evaluated,and characterized to determine their thermal insulation *** conductivity values ranged between 0.086 and 0.100 W/(m·K).At a maximum filler concentration(50%(w)),the specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity were 1183 J/(kg·K)and 0.0689 mm^(2)/s,*** DPP increased the thermal stability,and the highest compressive strength obtained was 80 MPa at 30%filler *** PHB-DPP composites exhibited promising water absorption(less than 6%)and tensile strength(6-14 MPa).Date-pit-based PHB composites could be used in sustainable building engineering and cleaner production.
