Introduction: The initial global response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic focused on adults as adolescents mainly had subclinical infections. Adolescents, however, could transmit the virus and hence be a risk to the elderly, young children and immunocompromised. Adolescents are also at risk of long-term complications. This study sought to determine the prevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 among adolescents in Southern Nigeria, and to determine the association between SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity and age, gender, socioeconomic class, school type and nutritional status. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in Edo state of southern Nigeria. We recruited 270 in-school adolescents aged 10 - 19 years. A WHO-adapted, pre-tested questionnaire was used to obtain data on participant history and risk factors. The questionnaire was interviewer-administered. Adolescents whose parents gave consent were recruited through a multi-stage randomized sampling method. Capillary blood for the assay was collected and analysed using a lateral-flow immunoassay device. The primary outcome was serostatus of the study. The positive predictors of serostatus were finally determined using a multiple logistics regression model. Statistical significance was set at p Results: The seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was 45.9%. IgM antibodies were found in 5.6% of participants. Older adolescents had higher seropositivity rates than younger adolescents (2 = 8.101, p = 0.017). There was no association between gender and seropositivity. Adolescents in public schools were more likely to be seropositive than those in private schools (2 = 25.242, p = 0.001). A higher seroprevalence was noticed among study participants in the lower socioeconomic class (x2 = 6.928, p = 0.031), and those in overcrowded classes. (2 = 79.303, p = 0.001). The left para-duodenal internal hernia, whose origin is generally embryological, is a rare etiology of intestinal obstruction found mainly in young adults. We report here the case of acute intestinal obstruction by left para-duodenal internal hernia in a 36-year-old young man. It was a patient who consulted urgently for occlusive syndrome with cessation of materials and gases. Abdominal percussion noted abdominal tympanism and pre-hepatic dullness was preserved. The flow and icicle signs were negative. Palpation did not objectify hepatosplenomegaly and did not find any organomegaly either. On the other hand, she found an epigastric defense. The abdominal X-ray without preparation showed water levels that were wider than high, hail-like. We performed a median above and below umbilical laparotomy and intraoperatively, it was an internal hernia with incarceration of small loops in a voluminous left paraduodenal sac of 12 cm. They were not necrotic and quickly recolored after extrication. We resected the hernial sac and closed the hernial orifice with separate stitches with absorbable suture 0. The postoperative course was simple. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the 4th postoperative day. After 18 months of hindsight, he is doing well.

Evaluation of Surgical Treatment of Distal Humeral Fractures in Adults

Introduction: Fractures of the distal end of the humerus are becoming increasingly frequent in young subjects because of the increase in road traffic accidents, and in elderly subjects because of osteoporosis related to aging populations. Materials and Methods: It was a prospective, monocentric study from January 2018 to December 2020 involving 14 patients who received and were treated surgically for distal humeral fractures and followed up. Results: We collected 14 patients, including 11 men (78.57%) and 3 women (21.43%), with a sex ratio of 3.7. The mean age was 36.41 years. The circumstances of onset were dominated by road traffic accidents, with 12 cases (85.71%). The dominant side was right-handed, with 11 cases (78.57%). Standard elbow radiography revealed 8 cases of type A fractures (57.14%), 4 cases of type B and 2 cases of type C fractures of the AO. We performed Lecestre plate osteosynthesis in 12 patients and external fixator in 2 others, using the trans-olecranial and transtricipital approaches. Elbow stiffness was the most frequent complication, with 6 cases (42.86%). After six months’ follow-up, our results were excellent and good in 78.57% of cases (MEPS). Conclusion: Surgical treatment with posterior approaches enabled us to achieve restitution of the articular surfaces, solid restraint and early mobilization of the elbow with satisfactory functional results.

Capsule shells have been successfully fabricated from water-soluble chitosan(WSC)with the addition of alginate and Gembili *** was synthesized from crab shell chitosan by depolymerization *** capsule shells were made with the composition of WSC:Alginate,2:1,3:1 and 4:1(w/w)with and without the addition of Gembili *** starch was added with a ratio of Alginate:Starch,1:1(w/w).The capsule shell properties were evaluated according to Indonesian Pharmacopoeia *** solubility test showed that the capsule shells were comply with the *** highest degrees of swelling in water and HCl 0.1 N solution were 491.93%and 410.51%,*** highest degradation percentages in water and HCl 0.1 N solution were 57.80%and 21.44%,*** observation of physical appearance indicated that the capsule shell with WSC:Alginate:Starch in ratio of 3:1:1 has appearance close to commercial capsule shell.

Ibeno, one of the major oil producing communities in South-South Nigeria is a coastal commercial fishery hub that houses Axon-Mobil operational base and pharmaceutical/plastic industries. Shrimp species (Macrobrachium vollenhovenii) is a major aquatic food frequently consumed by inhabitants of the coastal area and those living hinterland, thus, being a major route of human exposure to 2-methylnaphthalene, phenanthrene and didodecyl phthalate in the area. The purpose of the study was to evaluate factors that determine bioaccumulation and assess the potential cancer and non-cancer risk posed by these contaminants through human (adult and children) exposure via shrimp’s consumption using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The associated sediment showed higher mean concentrations of 2-methylnaphthalene, phenanthrene and didodecylphthalate at the two sites relative to those in fresh shrimp samples and factors such as size, lipid content, physicochemical property and environmental condition influenced the uptake of these contaminants. Besides water loss, the traditional drying process enhanced the levels of phenanthrene and didodecylphthalate in dry shrimps most likely due to combustion process and relatively low volatility, respectively and lowered the level of 2-methylnapthalene linked to its relatively high volatility. The potential of cancer and non-cancer development in human were highest via dry large shrimp consumption and followed the sequence: dry small shrimp > fresh large shrimp > fresh small shrimp and were within the USEPA reference standards. Although children were more vulnerable, the exposed individuals may not exhibit notable health-associated adverse effects in the near future. Thus, adequate advocacy is needed to sensitize those living in the catchments who often prefer dry shrimp in their meals on the adverse health implications of these contaminants for their survival and the need to maintain the health of the ecosystem.

We describe a female Nigerian infant of otherwise healthy parents with no prior history of congenital anomalies who was born with left-sided cleft lip and palate, left anophthalmia, malformed left auricle, an atrial septal defect, and abnormal fusion of the medial ends of her ribs prior to their insertion into the sternum. She presented on account of respiratory difficulty following bouts of feed aspiration. Cautious feeding and the need for respiratory support are important aspects of care in patients with Goldenhar syndrome.

Biodegradability of di-n-butyl phthalate （DBP）, butylbenzyl phthalate （BBP）, di-ethylhexyl phthalate （DEHP）, and di-isononyl phthalate （DINP） under an anaerobic condition was evaluated using three natural sediment microcosms obtained from ponds in Osaka, which had not been significantly polluted by the chemicals. The degradabilities of the four phthalic acid esters（PAEs） were analyzed by a first-order kinetic model with a lag phase and ranked as DBP〉BBP〉〉DEHP〉DINP. The PAEs with shorter alkyl-chains, DBP and BBP, were degraded with quite short lag phases near to zero and short half-lives of a few days. The PAEs with longer alkyl-chains, DEHP and DINP, were degraded with lag phases of 5-30 d and the quite long half-lives of a couple of hundred days. Although no data was available on the anaerobic biodegradability of D1NP before this study, it was clarified that DINP can be degraded with slow degradation rates. The fact that all the three intact sediments were capable of biodegradation of the PAEs suggests that potential of anaerobic biodegradation of PAEs is widespread in the aquatic environment.

The solutions of the Schrdinger equation with quantum mechanical gravitational potential plus harmonic oscillator potential have been presented using the parametric Nikiforov–Uvarov method. The bound state energy eigen values and the corresponding un-normalized eigen functions are obtained in terms of Laguerre polynomials. Also a special case of the potential has been considered and its energy eigen values are obtained.
