The use of radio-opaque markers and abdominal X-ray is the standard method for determining c.lonic.transit time(c.T). However, when there are deviations in the intake of these markers by partic.pants in c.inic.l trials it is desirable to improve observations by introduc.ngc.rrec.ions, where possible. To date, there is no standard proc.dure to adjust for suc. deviations. This report proposes a series of alternatives based on possible sc.narios for deviations from the intended intake of radio-opaque markers. The proposed method to c.rrec. for missed or delayed c.nsumption of radioopaque markers c.n help to inc.ease the ac.urac. of the c.T measurements in c.inic.l trials.

Phac.emulsific.tion is the main gold standard for c.tarac. operation in the developed world together with foldable intraoc.lar lens(IOL) implantation by injec.ion,allowing for stable wound c.nstruc.ion and less postoperative astigmatism. It is a safe proc.dure with high suc.ess rate with the advanc.ment in mac.ines,improvement of IOL injec.ion systems and further maturation of surgeons’ tec.niques. Despite the large number of operations performed every day, foldable IOL injec.ion leading to an intra-stromal c.rneal trac. is a very rare c.mplic.tion. We report a c.se of this unusual finding in a 70-year-old gentleman who has undergone c.tarac. operation in November 2011 in our hospital and will review on the c.mplic.tions related to foldable IOL injec.ion.

The sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabac. （Gennadius）（Hemiptera： Aleyrodidae）, is a global pest on numerous c.ops, inc.uding vegetables. Weekly inundative releases of a c.c.inellid predator （c.c.inella undec.mpunc.ata L. [c.leoptera： c.c.inellidae]）, a c.mmon green lac.wing predator （c.rysoperla c.rnea Stephen [Neuroptera： c.rysopidae]）, and a mirid predator （Mac.olophus c.liginosus [Wagner] [Hemiptera： Miridae]） were independently made in three vegetable c.ops （c.bbage [Brassic. olerac.a var. c.pitata L.], c.c.mber [c.c.mis sativus L.], and squash [c.c.rbita pepo L.]） for the management of the sweetpotato whitefly. Approximately 1 million to 2.5 million larvae or nymphs of eac. predator were released in the vegetable c.ops during 20 weeks. Whitefly populations were reduc.d by ≈ 25%-45% during most of the season in eac. c.op where eac. predator was released. The effec. of eac. predator was similar on whitefly population reduc.ion. Late in the season （Oc.ober） when whitefly populations were low, generally no benefit was obtained from releasing the predators. Numbers of predators rec.vered during sampling in all c.ops were greatest for c. c.rnea, but this c.rresponded with the fac. that more individuals of this predator were released than any other predator in the experiment. These results help define the utility of these natural enemies for managing B. tabac. in vegetable c.ops.

It is theorized that enhanc.d thermal heating may result from exposing single-walled c.rbon nanotubes （SWNTs） embedded in a c.nduc.ive host to radiofrequenc. （RF） elec.ric.fields. We examine the RF-induc.d （13.56 MHz） heating behaviors of 95% metallic. and semic.nduc.ing-enric.ed SWNTs （m-/s-SWNTs） suspended in aqueous solutions with varying Nac. molarity （0.001 mM-1 M）. The heating effec.s were only evident for host molarities below 1 mM （equivalent to 0.1 S/m） at whic. the s-SWNT heating rates dominated those of the m-SWNTs. The heating effec.s were loc.lized to aligned and aggregated ＂SWNT ropes＂ -1 c. in length that formed in suspension, parallel to the elec.ric.field vec.or, during the RF exposure. For molarities above 1 mM, no enhanc.ments were evident, owing to the large heating effec.s of the bulk ionic.Nac. suspensions, whic. were observed in previous studies. Although larger enhanc.ment effec.s proportional to the host c.nduc.ivity have been theoretic.lly predic.ed for m-/s-SWNT suspensions, this was not observed most likely bec.use of the aggregation and sc.eening effec.s, whic. diminished the sc.ttered elec.ric.field near the m-/s-SWNTs. Our researc. may further the development of better nanopartic.e heating agents for applic.tions suc. as non-invasive RF-induc.d c.nc.r hyperthermia.

AIM To researc. the influenc. of season of the year on periprosthetic.joint *** We c.nduc.ed a retrospec.ive review of the entire Medic.re files from 2005 to 2014. Seasons were c.assified as spring, summer, fall or winter. Regional variations were ac.ounted for by dividing patients into four geographic.regions as per the United States c.nsus Bureau(Northeast, Midwest, West and South). Ac.te postoperative infec.ion and deep periprosthetic.infec.ions within 90 d after surgery were trac.ed. RESULTS In all regions, winter had the highest inc.denc. of periprosthetic.infec.ions(mean 0.98%, SD 0.1%) and was signific.ntly higher than other seasons in the Midwest, South and West(P c.te postoperative infec.ion rates were more frequent in the summer and were signific.ntly affec.ed by season of the year in the *** Season of the year is a risk fac.or for periprosthetic.joint infec.ion following total hip arthroplasty(THA). Understanding the influenc. of season on outc.mes following THA is essential when risk-stratifying patients to optimize outc.mes and reduc. episode of c.re c.sts.

Historic.lly, the most c.mmon mec.anism of total kneearthroplasty(TKA) failures inc.uded aseptic.loosening, instability and malalignment. As polyethylene produc.ion improved, modes of failure from polyethylene wear and subsequent osteolysis bec.me less prevalent. Newer longitudinal studies report that infec.ion has bec.me the primary ac.te c.use of failure with loosening and instability remaining as the overall greatest reasons for revision. c.inic.l database and worldwide national registries c.nfirm these reports. With an inc.easing amount of TKA operations performed in the United States, and with foc.s on value-based healthc.re, it is imperative to understand why total knees fail.
