In vitro adherence of conjunctival bacteria to different oculoplastic materials

AIM: To investigate the resistance to bacterial adhesion of materials used in oculoplastic surgery, particularly materials used in the manufacture of orbital ***: Seven organisms of conjunctival flora(two strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis and one strain each of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hominis, Corynebacterium amycolatum, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, and Serratia marcescens) were selected. A lactic acid bacterium(Lactobacillus rhamnosus) was also included as positive control because of its well-known adhesion ability. Eight materials used to make oculoplastic prostheses were selected(glass, steel, polytetrafluoroethylene, polymethylmethacrylate, silicone from orbital implants, commercial silicone, porous polyethylene, and semismooth polyethylene). Materials surfaces and biofilms developed by strains were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Kinetics of growth and adhesion of bacterial strains were determined by spectrophotometry. Each strain was incubated in contact with plates of the different materials. After growth, attached bacteria were re-suspended and colony-forming units(CFUs) were counted. The number of CFUs per square millimetre of material was statistically ***: A mature biofilm was observed in studied strains except Staphylococcus hominis, which simply produced a microcolony. Materials showed a smooth surface on the microbial scale, although steel exhibited 1.0-μm-diameter grooves. Most organisms showed significant differences in adhesion according to the material. There were also significant differences in thetotal number of CFUs per square millimetre from each material(P=0.044). CFU counts were significantly higher in porous polyethylene than in silicone from orbital implants(P=0.038).CONCLUSION: Silicone orbital implants can resist microbial colonization better than porous polyethylene implants.

Conjunctival flora in anophthalmic patients: microbiological spectrum and antibiotic sensitivity

AIM: To identify the spectrum and susceptibility pattern of isolated microorganisms from conjunctival flora of anophthalmic ***: A cross-sectional clinical study including 60 patients with unilateral anophthalmia. Patients with use of antibiotic drops in their socket during the last month were also included. From each patient, three microbiological samples were taken from the lower conjunctival sac(healthy eye, pre-prosthesis, and retro-prosthesis space of socket). The 180 samples obtained were cultured. Isolates were identified and their antibiotic sensitivities were ***: A total of 251 isolates were recovered(62 isolates from healthy eye, 93 from pre-prosthesis, and 96 from retro-prosthesis space). The most common organism was Staphylococcus epidermidis, in both healthy eyes(64.5%) and sockets(45.5%). Altogether, coagulasepositive Staphylococci, Streptococci, and Gram-negative bacteria accounted for less than 15% of isolates in healthy eyes and more than 35% in sockets. Regarding the antibiotic sensitivities, there were no significant differences between isolates from sockets and healthy eyes. Nine patients recognized the use of self-prescribed antibiotic drops in their socket. In the healthy eyes of these subjects, Gram-positive microorganisms showed significantly greater resistance to aminoglycosides and ***: Sockets of anophthalmic patients show a greater number of pathogens compared to healthy *** use of antibiotic drops in the socket promotes a resistant flora not only in the socket but also in the healthy eye. Quinolones and macrolides may be better therapeutic options than aminoglycosides for treating conjunctivitis of anophthalmic sockets, since these antibiotics are less active against Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile ducts: A case report and literature review

Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct(IPNB) is a rare bile duct neoplasm mostly found in far eastern nations where hepatolithiasis and clonorchiasis infections are endemic. In western countries,it is very rare and the etiology is unknown. In this article,we report the first IPNB patient we encountered in our clinic and a literature review. The patient is a 38-yearold female with a history of choledocholithiasis who presented with obstructive jaundice. She was found to have a papillary mass at the junction of the right hepatic duct and common hepatic duct with six masses in the liver parenchyma. The immunophenotypic and histologic features of the tumor are consistent with IPNB,gastric subtype. The patient had a partial hepatectomy and has been receiving palliative chemotherapy. In a search of Pub Med database,we collected 354 IPNB patients reported in 22 articles. In these patients,52.8% were from Japan and 27.7% were from western countries including the United States(11.0%). The age of the patients ranged from 35 to 80 years old with an average of 64.6. Male/female ratio was 1.5. Macroscopically,57.5% of the tumors were in the left lobe and 29.5% were in the right lobe. The average size of the tumor were 4.2 cm at the time of diagnosis. Histologically,pancreato-biliary subtype accounted for 41.8%,intestinal 28.0%,gastric 13.5% and oncocytic 16%. An invasive component is most often present in the pancreato-biliary and gastric subtypes. Despite recent advanced technologies,diagnosis of IPNB is still challenging,especially in western countries due to its rarity. Defined clinicopathologic features are in demand for the accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Influence of Fatigue Loading on the Residual Stress Distribution in Prestressing Steel Wires

This paper analyzes the influence of fatigue loading on the residual stress profile in high strength steel wires. To this end, different sinusoidal loads with diverse values of maximum loading level and number of cycles were simulated on wires in which several residual stress profiles had been previously introduced, some of them with a tensile state and others with a compressive state. An analysis was made of the evolution with time of such residual stress laws by comparing them at key instants of loading, that is, at initial instant, at maximum load, at minimum load and at final instant. Numerical results show only a minor influence of fatigue loading on the residual stress profile.

本文研究了红金香苹果和澳大利亚绿苹果浓缩汁在贮藏过程中的褐变速度。以65°、70°和75°白利糖度(Brix)和5℃、20℃和37℃的贮藏温度比较了在120天内的颜色变化。红金香苹果汁的颜色变化较快。在不同浓度和贮藏条件下的颜色反应是指数反应,同温度之间服从阿雷尼厄斯定律,在固形物含量为65～75℃白利糖度范围内的活性能为16.4～19.3千卡/克分子。苹果汁品种对活化能的影响可以忽略不计。水活性同其他研究者报道的结果大体一致,试验中得出了预告商品浓缩汁褐变情况的相关性。在其它条件都相同的情况下,受热的情况是获得优质浓缩汁的关键因素。

Genome-wide association studies(GWASs) have been instrumental in understanding complex phenotypic traits. However, they have rarely been used to understand lineage-specific pathways and functions that contribute to the trait. In this study, by integrating lineage-specific enhancers from mesenchymal and myeloid compartments with bone mineral density loci, we were able to segregate osteoblast-and osteoclast(OC)-specific functions. Specifically, in OCs, a PU.1-dependent transcription factor(TF)network was revealed. Deletion of PU.1 in OCs in mice resulted in severe osteopetrosis. Functional genomic analysis indicated PU.1 and MITF orchestrated a TF network essential for OC differentiation. Several of these TFs were regulated by cooperative binding of PU.1 with BRD4 to form superenhancers. Further, PU.1 is essential for conformational changes in the superenhancer region of Nfatc1. In summary, our study demonstrates that combining GWASs with genome-wide binding studies and model organisms could decipher lineage-specific pathways contributing to complex disease states.

The basin of Rio de la Sabana is the largest tributary of the Tres Palos coastal lagoon in Southwest Mexico, east of Acapulco. This lagoon and its upstream basin areas have become a high priority area for the preservation of coastal and marine environments. To obtain information about water quality as affected by urban expansion since 2002, fourteen physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, sulphate, phosphate), biochemical (biological and chemical oxygen demand, methylene blue active substances) and bacteriological parameters (total and fecal coliforms) were determined. This sampling was done for dry and rainy season conditions at seven locations (S1, S2, S3, …, S7) along the river, spaced 3 to 6 km apart to a total of 30.4 km. The results were grouped into four zones: (Z1) reference, (Z2) transition, (Z3) polluted, (Z4) recovery. The Alborada (S5) and Tunzingo (S6) sites, adjacent to dense high-class residential areas (Z3), had the greatest pollution charges in both seasons, while the La Poza (S7) site near the Tres Palos lagoon (Z4) showed a decrease in pollution. All parameters correlated with increasing head- to down-river sampling distance by following linear (pH, DO) or curvilinear patterns (all other parameters). Using sampling location and dry versus rainy sampling season as multivariate regression (predictor) variables led to least-squares capturing: 1) 66% to 95% of the T(°C), pH, DO, and PO3-4 variations, and 2) 57% to 96% of the log-linear variations of the other parameters. Among the parameters, T(°C), DO, and PO3-4 were not significantly affected by sampling season, while pH became so after deleting two higher than usual pH values at the S5 and S6 locations during the dry season.

Background:Tuberculosis cutis orificialis is an extremely rare variant of cutaneous tuberculosis. Perianal location is a possible site of presentation. Methods:We describe the management of a young male with a painless non-specific perianal ulcer, who presented an asymptomatic disseminate pulmonary and intestinal tuberculosis. He had a history of pulmonary sarcoidosis and long-term corticosteroid therapy. Results:Healing of the ulcer was achieved after three-drug antituberculous therapy, with an improvement of the radiographic pulmonary alterations. Conclusions:Tuberculous origin should be considered in persistent perianal ulcers to avoid delays in the treatment of this rare form of tuberculosis.
