Effect of snow on mountain river regimes： an example from the pyrenees

The purpose of this study was to characterize mountain river regimes in the Spanish pyrenees and to assess the importance of snow accumulation and snowmelt on the timing of river flows. Daily streamflow data from 9 gauging stations in the pyrenees were used to characterize river regimes. These data were analyzed by hydrological indices, with a focus on periods when snow accumulation and snowmelt occurred. These results were combined with data on Snow Water Equivalent （SWE）（from measure- ments of depth and density of snow in the main river basins and also simulated by a process-based hydrological model）, snowmelting （simulated by a process-based hydrological model）, precipitation （from observations）, and temperature （from observations）. Longitude. and elevation gradients in the pyrenees explain the transition of river regimes from those that mostly had low nival signals （in the west and at low elevations） to those that mostly had high nival signals （low winter runoff and late spring peakflow, in the east and at high elevations）. Although trend analyses indicated no statistically signifi- cant changes, there was a trend of decreased nival signal over time in most of the analyzed rivers. Our results also demonstrated that snow processes cannot explain all of the interannual variability of river regimes, because the temporal distribution of liquid precipitation and tempera- ture play key roles in hydrography.

This study demonstrated the usefulness of very long-range terrestrial laser scanning(TLS) for analysis of the spatial distribution of a snowpack, to distances up to 3000 m, one of the longest measurement range reported to date. Snow depth data were collected using a terrestrial laser scanner during 11 periods of snow accumulation and melting,over three snow seasons on a pyrenean hillslopecharacterized by a large elevational gradient, steep slopes, and avalanche occurrence. The maximum and mean absolute snow depth error found was 0.5-0.6 and 0.2-0.3 m respectively, which may result problematic for areas with a shallow snowpack, but it is sufficiently accurate to determine snow distribution patterns in areas characterized by a thick snowpack. The results indicated that in most cases there was temporal consistency in the spatial distribution of thesnowpack, even in different years. The spatial patterns were particularly similar amongst thesurveys conducted during the period dominated by snow accumulation(generally until end of April), or amongst those conducted during the period dominated by melting processes(generally after mid of April or early May). Simple linear correlation analyses for the 11 survey dates, and the application of Random Forests analysis to two days representative of snow accumulation and melting periods indicated the importance of topography to the snow distribution. The results also highlight that elevation and the Topographic position index(TpI) were the main variables explaining the snow distribution, especially during periods dominated by melting. The intra-and inter-annual spatial consistency of the snowpack distribution suggests that the geomorphological processes linked to presence/absence of snow cover act in a similar way in the long term, and that these spatial patternscan be easily identifiedthrough several years of adequate monitoring.

AIM： To evaluate rational and experiential intelligence in irritable bowel syndrome （IBS） sufferers. METHODS： We recruited 100 subjects with IBS as per Rome 11 criteria （50 consulters and 50 non-consulters） and 100 healthy controls, matched by age, sex and educational level. Cases and controls completed a clinical questionnaire （including symptom characteristics and medical consultation） and the following tests： rational- intelligence （Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 3rd edition）; experiential-intelligence （Constructive Thinking Inventory）; personality （NEO personality inventory）; psychopathology （MMpI-2）, anxiety （state-trait anxiety inventory） and life events （social readjustment rating scale）. Analysis of variance was used to compare the test results of IBS-sufferers and controls, and a logistic regression model was then constructed and adjusted for age, sex and educational level to evaluate any possible association with IBS. RESULTS： No differences were found between IBS cases and controls in terms of IQ （102.0 ± 10.8 vs 102.8 ± 12.6）, but IBS sufferers scored significantly lower in global constructive thinking （43.7± 9.4 vs 49.6 ± 9.7）. In the logistic regression model, global constructive thinking score was independently linked to suffering from IBS [OR 0.92 （0.87-0.97）], without significant OR for total IQ. CONCLUSION： IBS subjects do not show lower rational intelligence than controls, but lower experiential intelligence is nevertheless associated with IBS.

Using old liver grafts for liver transplantation: Where are the limits?

The scarcity of ideal liver grafts for orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) has led transplant teams to investigate other sources of grafts in order to augment the donor liver pool. One way to get more liver grafts is to use marginal donors, a not well-defined group which includes mainly donors > 60 years, donors with hypernatremia or macrosteatosis > 30%, donors with hepatitis C virus or hepatitis B virus positive serologies, cold ischemia time > 12 h, non-heart-beating donors, and grafts from split-livers or living-related donations. perhaps the most practical and frequent measure to increase the liver pool, and thus to reduce waiting list mortality, is to use older livers. In the past years the results of OLT with old livers have improved, mainly due to better selection and maintenance of donors, improvements in surgical techniques in donors and recipients, and intra- and post-OLT management. At the present time, sexagenarian livers are generally accepted, but there still exists some controversy regarding the use of septuagenarian and octogenarian liver grafts. The aim of this paper is to briefly review the aging process of the liver and reported experiences using old livers for OLT. Fundamentally, the series of septuagenarian and octogenarian livers will be addressed to see if there is a limit to using these aged grafts.

AIM： To investigate the prevalence of vacuolating cytotoxin （vacA）, cytotoxin associated gene A （cagA） and blood adhesion binding antigen （babA2） genotypes of Helicobacter pylori （H pylori） isolates from Cuban dyspeptic patients. METHODS： DNA was extracted from Hpylori-positive cultures taken from 130 dyspeptic patients. Genotyping was performed by pCR, using specific primers for vacA （s1, s2, m1, m2）, cagA and babA2 genes. Endoscopic observations and histological examinations were used to determine patient pathologies. RESULTS： vacA alleles s1, s2, m1 and m2 were detected in 96 （73.8%）, 34 （26.2%）, 75 （57.7%） and 52 isolates （40%）, respectively, while the cagA gene was detected in 95 isolates （73.2%）. One hundred and seven isolates （82.3%） were babA2-positive. A significant correlation was observed between vacAs1m1 and cagA and between vacAs1ml and babA2 genotypes （p 〈 0.001 and p 〈 0.05, respectively） and between babA2 genotype and cagA status （p 〈 0.05）; but, no correlation was observed between vacAsl and babA2 genotypes. Eighty five （65.4%） and 73 （56.2%） strains were type 1 （vacAsl-cagA-positive） and ＂triplepositive＂（vacAs1-cagA-babA2-positive）, respectively, and their presence was significantly associated with duodenal ulcer （p 〈 0.01 and p 〈 0.001, respectively）. CONCLUSION： The distribution of the main virulence factors in the Cuban strains in this study resembled that of the Western-type strains, and the more virulent H pylori isolates were significantly associated with duodenal ulcer, ulcer disease being the worst pathology observed in the group studied.

Exact staging of cervical malignant neoplasms is essential in the selection of the most favorable therapy. MR imaging plays a comprehensive role in primary tumor staging. It monitors response to treatment, detects recurrence and helps in the planning of radiotherapy. patients with advanced disease usually receive external-beam radiation therapy followed by intracavitary brachytherapy with concurrent chemotherapy. Brachytherapy based on cross-sectional imaging, especially MR imaging, improves local control and overall survival. MRI-based brachytherapy allows accurate positioning of the probe and the depiction of the tumor volume contour, which also permits individualized treatment planning. In order to obtain successful radiation treatment, the radiologist must provide the radiation oncologist with adequate knowledge regarding this technique and its possible complications.
