Effect of fibrin glue on corneal lamellar healing and how it correlates to biomechanical properties: biomechanical wavefront analysis and confocal study

Background:To evaluate,using a rabbit model,the influence of the wound healing process at the flap edge on corneal biomechanics after sutured,glued,and non-augmented microkeratome ***:Unilateral 160μm thick laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK)flaps using a mechanical microkeratome were performed on the corneas of the left eyes of 36 *** were then divided into 3 groups of 12 rabbits each:A:the flaps were glued with human fibrin tissue adhesive(Tisseel);B:the flaps were sutured;and C:the flaps were allowed to heal without the use of sutures or glue(non-augmented).The contralateral eyes served as *** ocular response analyzer(ORA)was used to measure corneal hysteresis(CH),corneal resistance factor(CRF),Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure(IOPg)and cornea-compensated IOP(IOPcc)at 6 weeks and 3 months *** vivo confocal microscopy(IVCM)was also used to study the corneal wound healing process in all ***:Both mean CH and mean CRF were significantly higher in sutured and glued groups compared with the non-augmented group at 6 weeks and 3 months postoperatively(P<0.0001).No statistically significant difference in corneal biomechanics was found between controls and groups A and B at any time *** keratocytes were detected at the wound edge and peripheral flap interface in sutured and glued ***:The healing process at the wound edge is critical for optimal corneal *** glue may serve as a safe and effective substitute to sutures in enhancing the corneal flap edge healing response and in increasing its mechanical strength.

Clinical outcomes of combined versus separate carbachol and brimonidine drops in correcting presbyopia

Background:To test and compare in a masked fashion the efficacy of using a parasympathomimetic drug(3%carbachol)and an alpha-2 agonist(0.2%brimonidine)in both combined and separate forms to create optically beneficial miosis to pharmacologically improve vision in ***:A prospective,double-masked,randomized,controlled clinical trial was *** naturally emmetropic and presbyopic subjects between 42 and 58 years old with uncorrected distance visual acuity of at least 20/20 in both eyes without additional ocular pathology were eligible for *** subjects received 3%carbachol and 0.2%brimonidine in both combined and separate forms,3%carbachol alone and 0.2%brimonidine(control)alone in their non-dominant eye in a crossover manner with one week washout between *** subjects’pupil sizes and both near and distance visual acuities will be evaluated pre-and post-treatment at 1,2,4,and 8 h,by a masked examiner at the same room ***:Statistically significant improvement in mean near visual acuity(NVA)was achieved in all subjects who received combined 3%carbachol and 0.2% brimonidine in the same formula compared with those who received separate forms or carbachol alone or brimonidine alone(P<0.0001).Conclusion:Based on the data,the combined solution demonstrated greater efficacy than the other solutions that were *** the depth of focus by making the pupil small caused statistically significant improvement in near visual acuity,with no change in binocular distance *** registration:*** 11 November 2016.

Tuberculum Sellae Meningiomas: Transcranial Approaches Results and Complications

Objective: Tuberculum sellae meningiomas constitute about 5% - 10% of intracranial meningiomas. They are difficult to treat, owing to their close association with the optic nerves, chiasma, and major cerebral arteries. This retrospective study aims to report on the clinical outcome after transcranial approach for treatment of tuberculem sellae meningiomas at our hospital. Patients and Methods: We reviewed patients with tuberculem sellae meningiomas and underwent transcranial surgical approaches for their lesions at Sohag university hospitals over a 4 years period starting from January 2018. The patients’ clinical and radiological data, operative details, degrees of tumor removal, outcomes and complications were reported. Results: There were 17 patients with tuberculem sellae meningiomas with a mean age of 46.3 years. Female patients constituted 70% of cases. Pterional approach was used in 59% of cases and unilateral subfrontal approach was used in 41% of cases. Gross total tumor removal was achieved in 82% of cases. Visual acuity improved in 47%, remained unchanged in 41%, and worsened in 5.9% of patients. Transient post-operative diabetes inspidus and post-operative haematoma in tumor bed each occurred in 5.9% of patients. Conclusion: Transcranial removal of tuberculum sellae meningioma is still considered the standard approach, with high rate of gross total resection and better visual outcome and low mortality and morbidity.

Synthesis and Characterization of SnO<SUB>2</SUB>Flower-Shaped by Hydrothermal Route for Formaldehyde Sensing Properties

In this work, we’ve made SnO2 flower formed with the aid of using easy test steps, and without cost, which is the hydrothermal approach and without a template. We have used a variety of techniques to characterize SnO2 flower-shaped by (SEM, TEM, XRD, BET and XPS) instruments. Confirmatory tests carried out have proven that the surface of the tetragonal structure of SnO2 has a rough surface which makes it excellent for its gas-sensing properties. The gas detection test of SnO2 flower-shaped proved that it possesses the selectivity of formaldehyde gas (about 30), the optimum operating temperature of the sensor is 220°C, and also the sensor has a high response time and recovery time is (5 s and 22 s) to 100 ppm, respectively. Particularly, the sensor has an obvious response value (2) when exposed to 5 ppm formaldehyde. As well, the mechanism of gas-sensing was also discussed.
