Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule that,after a short-term sleep deprivation,promotes the proliferation of neural stem cells in the adult ***,this effect has not been observed in long-term sleep *** precise mechanism exerted by melatonin on the modulation of neural stem cells is not entirely elucidated,but evidence indicates that epigenetic regulators may be involved in this *** this study,we investigated the effect of melatonin treatment during a 96-hour sleep deprivation and analyzed the expression of epigenetic modulators predicted by computational text mining and keyword *** results showed that the administration of melatonin under sleep-deprived conditions increased the MECP2 expression and reduced the SIRT1 expression in the dentate *** observed that let-7 b,mir-132,and mir-124 were highly expressed in the dentate gyrus after melatonin administration,but they were not modified by sleep *** addition,we found more Sox2^+/5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine(BrdU)^+cells in the subgranular zone of the sleep-deprived group treated with melatonin than in the untreated *** findings may support the notion that melatonin modifies the expression of epigenetic mediators that,in turn,regulate the proliferation of neural progenitor cells in the adult dentate gyrus under long-term sleep-deprived *** procedures performed in this study were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of the University of Guadalajara,Mexico(approval ***-16610)on january 2,2016.

Hepatitis B Virus Genotype H and Environmental Factors Associated to the Low Prevalence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Mexico

Purpose: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading health problem worldwide. Any agent causing chronic liver damage and cirrhosis is a risk factor for HCC. Genetic and environmental factors may be responsible for regional variations in the occurrence of HCC worldwide. The aim of this review was to describe the risk factors that may be contributing to low prevalence of HCC in the Mexican population. Methods: An electronic systematic search was conducted in four databases to retrieve studies on hepatocellular carcinoma inMexico. Results: Eighteen publications gave a total of 1042 HCC cases with a percentage that ranged from 0.25% to 1.87%. Cirrhosis was registered in 7 studies while the main etiologies were: HCV (66%), HBV (11%) and alcoholism (6.6%). Conclusions: In the last 50 years, the studies performed inMexicohave shown a very low incidence and/or mortality rate of HCC. These findings contrast from those reported in high endemic regions, such asAsia, where viral hepatitis and HCC are prevalent. One significant difference is the predominance of HBV genotype H in Mexico and HBV/B and C in Asia. InMexico, high endemic areas of HBV infection have been detected, mainly among the native population;however, infection seems to resolve very quickly, due to a prominent immunological response among the population. Other factors are that patients with liver cirrhosis die prematurely before that HCC can be detected. Furthermore, an environmental factor that may exert a protective effect against HCC, in spite of the high consumption of potentially aflatoxin-contaminated food products, is the neutralization of these substances by alkaline treatment. This study shows that genetic and environmental factors associated to HCC among the Mexican population are different from others reported worldwide.

Biogas Production from Sheep Manure by a Simulated Underground Burial System Heated with Cascade-Controlled Solar Water Heated System, as an Indicator of Biomass Potential Contribution to Power Mix in jordan

This paper is aimed at exploring the potential of implementing biomass as one of the sources of energy in jordan using a simulated underground burial system. A controlled solar energy heated system was employed to maintain the anaerobic bioreactor at 40°C (mesophilic range). Sludge and wastewater, from wastewater treatment plant, was used as a seeding material to activate bacteria. Production of biogas was observed after 3 days of incubation. On average, a total of 94 liters/sample were obtained at 25°C and atmospheric pressure. This amount of gas is equivalent to 258 liters/kg (Standard Temperature and Pressure, STP) of sheep manure. The biogas average composition was 65% methane and 35% CO2, and the retention time was 35 days. Control runs at room temperature did not produce appreciable amount of biogas within the 35 days of incubation. The potential of biomass was studied based on estimated sheep manure production for the period of 2010-2016 in jordan. The results obtained from the designed process were used to estimate the bio-gas production indicating a promising process to produce biogas by a burial bio-waste system. Upon scale-up of this process, biomass from different sources can be processed within short residence time, which will result in appreciable reduction of land fill areas and significant production of biogas that will contribute to the energy power mix in a non-oil producing country, such as jordan.

The Role of Mediterranean Spotted Fever in the Spectrum of Pediatric Fever with Rashes

When febrile illnesses develop a rash in children, parents are very concerned about a serious disease. Many rashes associated with fever are caused by infectious diseases. Rashes are generally nonspecific and play a supportive role in differential diagnosis, but for some diseases, the appearance of the rash is essential in making a diagnosis. Here is presented the case of a 4-year-old boy with high fever, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and a generalized maculo-papular rash including palms and soles. On physical examination were found a black eschar, cervical lymphadenopathy, and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory findings resulted in moderate leukocytosis and moderate involvement of the liver and renal function. Based on this finding, a diagnosis of Mediterranean Spotted Fever was performed. The child recovered after medication with azithromycin. Because there is no reliable test that can confirm MSF in its early stages, the diagnosis is commonly made on the basis of clinical findings, so a high index of suspicion should be maintained while evaluating a child with fever and rash.

Erythema Nodosum Following EBV Infection in a Child

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the eight known human herpesviruses, which is widespread in nature and infects most of the world population. In infants and young children, primary infection is usually asymptomatic or produces an acute illness that is often not recognized as being due to EBV. It has a well-established oncogenic potential, and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases. Here is reported the case of a 32-months old boy, who presented with a history of two days of low-grade fever, pain in both legs, swollen ankles and inability to walk. On physical examination, the child appeared moderately ill, without fever. On both shins were observed nodules 2 - 3 cm in diameter, red to bluish in color, firm and poorly demarcated. Clinically, a diagnosis of Erythema nodosus was performed. Laboratory examinations revealed increased inflammatory parameters. After a full workup, EBV was established as the causative agent. Erythema nodosum is the most common form of panniculitis in children;however, it is relatively uncommon in the pediatric population. It is a self-limited disease, and most of infectious origin in children. Although uncommon, EBV infection is a potential cause of pediatric erythema nodosum.

Nutrient-efficient root system architecture(RSA)is becoming an important breeding objective for generating crop varieties with improved nutrient and water acquisition *** variants shaping soybean RSA is key in improving nutrient and water ***,we report on the use of an improved 2-dimensional high-throughput root phenotyping platform that minimizes background noise by imaging pouch-grown root systems submerged in *** also developed a background image cleaning Python pipeline that computationally removes images of small pieces of debris and filter paper fibers,which can be erroneously quantified as root *** platform was used to phenotype root traits in 286 soybean lines genotyped with 5.4 million single-nucleotide *** was a substantially higher correlation in manually counted number of root tips with computationally quantified root tips(95%correlation),when the background was cleaned of nonroot materials compared to root images without the background corrected(79%).Improvements in our RSA phenotyping pipeline significantly reduced overestimation of the root traits influenced by the number of root ***-wide association studies conducted on the root phenotypic data and quantitative gene expression analysis of candidate genes resulted in the identification of 3 putative positive regulators of root system depth,total root length and surface area,and root system volume and surface area of thicker roots(DOF1-like zinc finger transcription factor,protein of unknown function,and C2H2 zinc finger protein).We also identified a putative negative regulator(gibberellin 20 oxidase 3)of the total number of lateral roots.

The Institutionalization of Life Cycle Assessment in Mexico

This article presents a study of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) at a slaughterhouse located in north-western Mexico with the purpose of testing the premise of a low degree of institutionalization of Industrial Ecology in Mexico. The article aims at analyzing the current role played by the Mexican academia in increasing the degree of institutionalization of the concept of LCA in northwestern Mexico. There was conducted a life cycle analysis study according to the standards ISO 14040: 2006, NMX-SAA-14040-IMNC-2008NOM in a Federally Inspected Type (TIF by Spanish acronym) Slaughterhouse in the state of Sonora in Northwest Mexico. The slaughter process was characterized by observing the production tasks during several walkthroughs the production lines and by having short interviews with workers, supervisors, and the manager. The CH4 emissions were calculated using the guidelines suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2006). The present LCA case study revealed opportunities for improving the environmental performance of the slaughterhouse by taking measures such as the reduction of CH4 from enteric fermentation since methane was one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. Although, the LCA generated reliable information in terms of climate change or water eutrophication, the chances of implementing sustainable initiatives were unlikely because the benefits to reduce the impacts to climate change or to reduce the water crisis would be unnoticeable and unaffordable for companies. Findings in this study also confirmed the importance of Mexican universities for promoting and conducting more LCA studies among private and public organizations in order to guide firms towards this tool. The case study here presented gives insights to LCA stakeholders in Mexico to implement or improve the effectiveness of their potential LCA initiatives through the identification of strategies, opportunities, and barriers.

Laboratory Indicators and Some Considerations in Albanian Patients with Beta Thalassemia Major and Sickle Cell Disease

Haemoglobinopathies are very serious clinical conditions caused by genetic mutations. They belong to autosomal recessive disorders and the most frequent genetic inherited diseases seen, specifically and above all among Mediterranean countries. Thalassaemia syndromes (included Beta Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Disease) have been the first diagnosed diseases since in intrauterine life using reccombinant DNA techniques. So, the better understanding of their pathophysiology has given a spectacolar improvement and a considerable impact on these conditional managements. Every year there are nearly 300,000 children born with haemoglobinopathies globally, and there are 60,000 - 70,000 children with Beta Thalassemia among them. Nowadays in Albania like everywhere, there is a significant increase of survival in these patients. As a result of life longevity and improvement of patients life quality, we can see that these patients may suffer from other concomitant illnesses. In our country, there are registered approximately 500 patients with haemoglobinopathies. We studied 50 pediatric patients at random ranging from age 2 until 18 years old. We excluded other pathologies among them. We found high values of biochemical indicators in blood (Ca 15-3 was found elevated in 75% of our patients, Lactate Dehydrogenases was found elevated in 70% of cases, Indirect Bilirubin was found elevated in 66% of cases). All three parameters are indicators of hemolysis. We found a correlation between high values of Ca 15-3 marker and high levels of LDH, Indirect Bilirubin and low level of hemoglobin (p < 0.05). Ca 15-3 is much elevated among patients non regularly transfused and in those who take an unsufficient amount of blood. Continuous monitoring of these biochemical parameters is going to help in the more effective follow up of patients with haemoglobinopathies.

Dear Editor ABA induces the phosphorylation of three basic helix-loop-helix （bHLH） transcription factors, called AKSs （ABA-responsive ki- nase substrates; AKS1, AKS2, and AKS3）. Respiratory diseases are one of the most important health problems in pig herds. The porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) is the term used to describe pneumonic diseases caused by multiple infectious agents that provoke weight loss in animals or death. In the PRDC multiple pathogens (bacteria and/or viruses) work in combination to induce this respiratory disease. Within this complex, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Streptococcus suis, Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Haemophilus parasuis and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae are the main bacterial pathogens involved in great economic losses to the swine industry. The aim of this work was to estimate the presence of A. pleuropneumoniae, S. suis, P. multocida, B. bronchiseptica, H. parasuis and M. hyopneumoniae in the upper respiratory tract of pigs in representative swine farms inAguascalientes,Mexico, using PCR technique. The study was performed in 14 swine farms. We obtained a total of 212 nasal swabs. Near 20% of samples were positive for A. pleuropneumoniae (located in the 79% of farms);17% were positive for S. suis (in 86% of farms), of these, 3% were S. suis serovar 2;30% were positive for H. parasuis (93% of farms);23% of the samples to P. multocida (in 79% of farms);and 19% to M. hyopneumoniae (in 64% of farms). B. bronchiseptica was not detected in this study. The results obtained show that bacterial pathogens of PRDC were present in the upper respiratory tract of pigs in all farms studied;therefore, these pathogens are widely disseminated in pig farms of Aguascalientes, Mexico.
