Land Cover Change and Its Socio-Economic Impact on the Residents of the Mara River, Kenya

Anthropogenic activities are increasingly catalyzing natural climatic factors that drive land cover change at different spatial scales. Available land cover data of the Mara River basin however give a broader picture of the entire basin regardless of the heterogeneity that exists at the sub-catchment level. This study sought to establish sub-catchment specific information on land cover changes through examination of satellite images of four Mara River sub-catchments (Amala, Nyangores, Talek and Sand River) for the period 1987-2017. The relationship between temperature, rainfall and land cover was also computed. In addition, a household survey and focus group discussions were conducted in each sub-catchments to establish the socio-economic impacts of land cover change on the community’s wellbeing. Forest cover was dominant in Amala (39.8%) and Nyangores (43.7%) sub-catchments in 1987 but by 2017 crop lands had surpassed forest cover in the two sub-catchments, accounting for 53.2% and 45.7%, respectively. However, in Talek (52.8%) and Sand River (47.4%) sub-catchments, grassland was the dominant land cover type in 1987 and after the 30 year period, grasslands remained dominant in Sand River, while shrub land became dominant in Talek sub-catchment. A weak positive correlation was observed between rainfall and forest cover, shrub land and cropland, while a negative correlation was observed between rainfall and bare land. Average temperature showed a positive moderate correlation with bare land and built up areas. Analysis of survey data revealed that livestock keeping, temperature increase, type of trees, education level of household head and weak environmental laws were the main drivers of land cover change (P −0.587), beans (r = −0.5459), sorghum (r = −0.351), cow peas (r = −0.544), and pigeon peas (r = −0.337). Focus group discussions participants were supportive of environmental protective measures to reverse negative land cover changes

Effects of Land Use Change on Land Degradation Reflected by Soil Properties along Mara River, Kenya and Tanzania

Human-induced changes to natural landscapes have been identified as some of the greatest threats to freshwater resources. The change from natural forest cover to agricultural and pastoral activities is rampant especially in the upper Mara River catchment (water tower), as well as along the course of the Mara River. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of land use change on the physico-chemical properties of soil (bulk density, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and pH) along the course of the Mara River. Five major land uses (agricultural lands, livestock/pastoral lands, forested lands, conservancy/game reserves, and natural wetland) were explored. Results revealed that the mean soil bulk density was 0.956 g/cm3 and differed significantly between sites (p ally acidic across the five sites and varied significantly (F(4, 63) = 19.26, p tween sites along the Mara River Basin. The mean percentage soil nitrogen across all sampling blocks was 4.87%, with significant differences observed in percentage soil nitrogen (F (4, 63) = 3.26, p < 0.006) between sampling sites. The results indicated that the five land use types affected land degradation differently along the Mara River, while adjacent land degradation affected water physico-chemical properties. These results point to the need to have focused policies on integrated land and water resource management strategies in the Mara River Basin.

We report 75As-nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and nuclear quadrupole resonance(NQR)measurements on transition-metal arsenides LaRu2As2,KCa2Fe4As4F2,and *** the superconducting state of LaRu2As2,a Hebel–Slichter coherence peak is found in the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 just below Tc,which indicates that LaRu2As2 is a full-gap *** KCa2Fe4As4F2,antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are observed in the normal *** further find that the anisotropy rate RAF=Tc 1/Tab 1 is small and temperature independent,implying that the low energy spin fluctuations are isotropic in spin *** results indicate that KCa2Fe4As4F2 is a moderately overdoped iron-arsenide high-temperature superconductor with a stoichiometric *** A2Cr3As3(A=Na,K,Rb,Cs),we calculate the electric field gradient by first-principle method and assign the 75As-NQR peaks to two crystallographically different As sites,paving the way for further NMR investigation.

However, the most suitable form is supposed to exist at conditions outside the above. In this paper, we reconsider the optimization problem of a both-ends-clamped beam that is subjected to a concentrated load under the condition of volume constancy as minimization problems of functions related to displacement and as a problem of making the strain energy density uniform by GA.

Efficacy of rituximab in gastric diffuse large B cell lymphoma patients

AIM:To evaluate retrospectively the efficacy of rituximab plus chemotherapy in gastric diffuse large B cell lymphoma(DLBCL).METHODS:Sixty patients(median age:58 years)with histologically confirmed gastric DLBCL treated at four Italian institutions between 2000 and 2007,were included in this *** were selected by stage (Ⅰ-Ⅳ,Lugano staging system),European Cooperative Oncology Group performance status(0-2)and treatment *** strategies were chemotherapy alone(group A,n=30)[scheduled as cyclophosphamide,doxorubicin,vincristine and prednisone (CHOP)and CHOP-like],and chemotherapy combined with rituximab(group B,n=30).The primary end point of the study was complete response(CR)rate;the secondary end points were disease-free survival (DFS)at 5 years and overall survival(OS).RESULTS:Median follow-up was 62 mo(range:31102 mo).We observed a significant difference between the two groups(A vs B)in terms of CR[76.6%(23/30) vs 100%,P=0.04)and DFS at 5 years[73.3%(22/30) vs 100%,P=0.03).To date,19 group A(63.3%) patients are alive and 11 have died,while all group B patients are *** significant differences in toxicity were observed between the two ***:Rituximab in combination with chemotherapy improves CR rate,DFS and *** prospective trials are needed to confirm our results.

Digital Ischemia in Patients with Solid Tumors: a Case Report and Review of the Literature

Digital ischemia is a rare paraneoplastic phenomenon associated with various malignancies, especially adenocarcinomas. We reported a case of digital ischemia onset during treatment with capecitabine + oxaliplatin, letrozole and epoetinbeta in a 75-year old woman with colon and breast cancer and a secondary hepatic lesion. A literature review disclosed 68 cases of solid neoplasms associated with digital ischemia. The proposed mechanisms of such clinical manifestations are various: vasospasm due to sympathetic hyperactivity, arteritis induced by tumour antigen-antibody complexes deposition or as consequence of immune deregulation, blood hyperviscosity, hypercoagulability or peripheral thrombosis. In the present case, clinical and laboratory evaluations failed to reveal evidence of thrombosis, arteritis, inherited or acquired hypercoagulable state and we postulated the peripheral vasospasm and the sympathetic activity (possibly due to chemotherapy drugs) as potential causes of the digital ischemia.

Immunogenicity of DNA and Recombinant Sendai Virus Vaccines Expressing the HIV-1 gag Gene

Combinations of DNA and recombinant-viral-vector based vaccines are promising AIDS vaccine methods because of their potential for inducing cellular immune responses. It was found that Gag-specific cytotoxic lymphocyte (CTL) responses were associated with lowering viremia in an untreated HIV-1 infected cohort. The main objectives of our studies were the construction of DNA and recombinant Sendai virus vector (rSeV) vaccines containing a gag gene from the prevalent Thailand subtype B strain in China and trying to use these vaccines for therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines. The candidate plasmid DNA vaccine pcDNA3.1(+)-gag and recombinant Sendai virus vaccine (rSeV-gag) were constructed separately. It was verified by Western blotting analysis that both DNA and rSeV-gag vaccines expressed the HIV-1 Gag protein correctly and efficiently. Balb/c mice were immunized with these two vaccines in different administration schemes. HIV-1 Gag-specific CTL responses and antibody levels were detected by intracellular cytokine staining assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) respectively. Combined vaccines in a DNA prime/rSeV-gag boost vaccination regimen induced the strongest and most long-lasting Gag-specific CTL and antibody responses. It maintained relatively high levels even 9 weeks post immunization. This data indicated that the prime-boost regimen with DNA and rSeV-gag vaccines may offer promising HIV vaccine regimens.

Primary germ cell tumors of lung are extremely rare. The prognosis is usually poor, with various symptoms seriously affecting quality of life. In this paper we describe the unique case of a patient affected by an embryonal carcinoma of lung and a testicular seminoma after ten years. We also report literature about pulmonary extragonadal germ cell tumors.
